If you like shortcuts here's my vote: Black Moa

I noticed the Black Moa still shows up in Factions, even after I completed the Beak of Darkness quest. Since they are level 20, and also really easy to get to if you've already run through Factions (just outside Aspenwood Gate), it saves alot of time leveling pets on Heros. Also noteworthy, you don't have to be level 20 to charm a level 20 pet. I charmed a Black Moa with a level 4 Koss W/R setup.

Side note, the pet tamer and his friends outside of the Sunspear Great Hall will run away from you if you have a Black Moa in your party. I guess they are scared of Black Moas. He will eventually stop running and tame your pet, you just have to catch up to him.

Here is a small screenie of my Black Moa Army!

Haha, they run from the black moa. It's cause theres a dialouge about it before you do the "impressive warthog" quest. thats funny though. and you're pic is a tad dark.

I like warthogs, unfortunately they don't come at level 20. I hope they improve on that system somehow, like a training facility for pets in the guildhall or so

Another easy lvl 20 pet capture location is during the first battle of Boreas Seabed in Factions. While it may not be as cool as the Black Moa, there are two lvl 20 Elder Crabs. They can be targeted while the mob is on top of the hill.

These are Elder pets correct? So they didn't develop along Dire or hearty lines?

or can you find them Dire or Hearty, Its just random what they are?

I have attempted trapping UW with my heros to get them a Black Widow (so i could hopefully get a Dire pet). It went pretty well until i had to go afk and Jin didn't flag out of agro range and we lost.

Its a slow process... but you can definatly bring along a 3rd hero to give you a hand or cap the black widow.

Muaha, nice though that is, thats not an army

To get an army of them, you need to do Vizunah Square and... well, u get the idea

My favorite pet for heroes are the lions/lionesses. The group of them near the Great Zehtuka (or whatever his name is) is great because they are all aggressive and lvl 12 so you only have 3 lvls to get them to dire (my favorite evo). Also, if you want to get them to elder that is an easy 3 lvls of letting them die (hearty is totally worthless IMO).

There's already someone else here (forgot the username) with an army of black moas (like one of each of his/her chars across several accounts....).

Hearty is useless. Pets are either there to kill or there to be killed.

Yes, why not? Depending on opposition 15% could easily mean no more then 2~3 HP. When comparing that to the 80 armour ignoring bonus from Enraged Lunge I would say those 15% are not high on my list of priorities and if those 15% are so important for your beastmaster builds that they'd be worthless without them, you are doing something wrong.

Quote: If that was the case assassins would use +5e Pets are not assassins. But for a ranger 5E could be 2.5 executions of Enraged Lunge, or 200 HP of damage. That's about 50~100 attacks worth of +15% of base damage.

Hearty is useless. Pets are either there to kill or there to be killed. That is just plain silly, dead pets do no damage at all and they can not tank damage either. If your MM needs a corpse, kill something. Better yet, have your pet kill something.

my favorite pet by far is the red crab. most people dont know how to get one, and death leveling it to a lvl 20 dire is pretty easy with a monk hero around.

Here is the way I look at it

Dire has 15% damage and 420 hlth
Hearty has -15% damage and 540 hlth

BUT those damage mods are based off the elder evolution. So, you are really looking at a huge reduction in damage...Dire is approimately 1.35 times as much as Hearty. That is a big deal to me, much more so than the extra 120 hlth that Hearty gets.

I personally use my pets only when I am going to give them at least half of my bar. Since they don't cast spells I like to have their physical damage as high as possible...let the monk hero deal with healing them or toss them a quick Call of Protection/Symb Bond and you have total offset any negative issues of the dire evolution.

That is a big deal to me, much more so than the extra 120 hlth that Hearty gets. All depends on what you like to use your pet for and how your attributes are spread.

If you're putting little to no points in Beast Mastery, then Hearty is far and away the best choice. With low BM, the + 15% dmg is worthless.

For those wanting a dire pet without having to level much: There's a dire tiger (lvl 15) just W of Boreas Seabed, IIRC. Equip running skills (and maybe an interrupt or two) and if you're lucky you can tame it before the Yetis.

Either way, black moa birds give you the best of both worlds. If you must have dire, then it's the lions in jahai bluffs that are the best bet. if you want elder, it's a wolf from the south shiverpeaks, and if you want hearty, anything will do.

But none of those are as cool as standard moa birds...

Just a thought.... but does the type of damage done really make a difference? ... That is to ask whether Piercing Damage is better or worse than Slashing Damage?

Presumably if less things were inherantly resistant to Piercing and more resistant to Slashing, then it would be worthwhile getting one of those Dune Lizard thingies... or the spidey... Then again, it could be the other way around. I think I'll default to Black Moa for my heroes... at least until such time as I feel like taking them to the UW, then I might get Margrid a Black Widow if I can...

Piercing has "Shields Up" to contend with which is pretty common. Slashing by comparison only has Bladeturn Refrain which is practically non-existent.

A different pet question:

How do you change a Hero's pet? Will talking to the trainer still work to get rid of their pets as well? Or only yours?

I capped a Phoenix for my Jin at the day of NF launch. Someone during the Whack-A-Shiro-Mission in Cantha: WTF, Jin why are you lvl 18 and how the *# did you get here? (or something in that sense) I guess that person never experienced heroes yet.

My ranger finished Nightfall two days ago and now Jin and Margrid have joined her group of heroes. I took them out to capture Black Moas yesterday, because I wanted level 20 pets. Margrid tamed the Black Moa no problem. Jin just refused. Wouldn't do it. She wanted a White Tiger and nothing else would do. Sigh.
