Snowball Fights DVG wtf?

well i'm really pissed of the fact that i lost so many times with 4-5. you should get something for that.
and the unbalanced thing of the snowball fight is also a problem imo

I had a few losses, but then I got 15 consecutive wins. It seems pretty even, and I don't see the problem.

The problem with Snowball Arena is that one person alone cannot finish an entire map. They'd have to stop 4 people running presents, defend themselves while running presents and try to get 5 in before they do. The PVP there isn't complex, it's just that people don't have any real incentive to win, so they don't bother. That, or they've just been disheartened by leechers, rage quitters and people that run to the wrong shrine. I got 30 wins in a row. My team was so great, we could have went on forever. But I just got bored after 30 straight wins and no challenges, so I left to do something else. All you can do is hope you don't have a team of warriors that will rage quit on you the second a snowball grazes their face and sends them in tears and just hope your team will actually run presents.
Grais
ALl these people crying about losing is making me laugh hard. Who Cares. Its unbalanced, blaaa blaa blaa who cares.
If you dont like it, dont go there. Ive been several times, lost a few, won a few, couldnt give two craps about any title or any amount of shards, ignore the losers, and I have had plenty of fun.Quit worrying so damn much about how everyone else plays the game, try to take the event in the spirit it was offered, if you dont like it, dont log in for another week or two.
As to the idea of having a TA arena, spare me. Its a joke mini game, why do people always want to take the fun out of anything and make it a competition. Maybe, just maybe if you didnt take it so seriously, and actually just for the joke it is, i mean its a snowball fight after all, maybe then you would enjoy it. Organised snowball fighting for the loss.

I think the OP is just making a valid and fun suggestion. I mean while I personally haven't had a chance to play in the arenas this year, I did last year and I for one thought it would be great to be able to team up with my guildies and friends.
I could care less about the noobness factor to be sure. I would just like to be able to chill and laugh on vent as we either whooped some tail or got ours handed to us alike! The idea is very solid and valid regardless of the OPs original reasoning for desiring such a concept.

Yep I had a losing streak too for about 5matches cause my team was full of people who either have no idea what they are doing, or are just plain annoying and stupid. Then someone got pissed.
Yeah happy holidays to you too...

I don't PvP; it's not that I don't feel I can, it's more that I don't feel I want to. However, I have been playing in the snowball arena since yesterday. I guess that makes me a noob?
I am, however, 37 wins for 52 matches, and just finished a 10 win streak where we had to exit for a new build. The one thing I hate most about GW PvP, which pretty much saps all the enjoyment out of it for me is the counterstrike mentality of a lot of players - anyone who is new, or not as skilled as you is automatically to be derided, shouted at and belittled. Believe me, I run CS:S and BF2 servers, and GW PvP is worse.
I didn't think I'd see this in a silly fun mini-game for the holidays, but there it is, the same old elitist nonsense. Every time I hear someone shout noob, I want to ask them if they were born with their skills. I say let everyone who has an elitist attidute have their own arenas to play in. No-one who has less experience than them will be allowed to join, and so they can all fight and yell abuse at each other until there's only one left, who can tell all his friends he's the daddy.
Anyway, wandering off topic, but in a nutshell, lighten up, it's the holidays! Take this opportunity to PvP for fun, instead of under pressure in the high level matches you play at other times.

There is a simple reason for the influx of less-skilled players.
This is a new (to many), novel form of PvP that is "marketed" as a light-hearted mini-game. It's not serious PvP.
As such, the massive amount of PvE-only players (which vastly outnumber PvP'ers, sadly) do not feel any reservations and enter the matches, with no prior PvP experience. Thus, they don't know what they're supposed to do. They don't know what it means to protect an ally, because they haven't had to do it before. They don't know the intricacies of the snowball skills because they don't look at them critically; they have no reason to. They don't know the strategies because they have never done GW PvP before in their lives.
In short, this event has drawn in an enormous amount of PvE'ers who want to do snowball fights for fun. And since they haven't PvPed, they don't know much of how to do anything. Thus, they're generally downright awful, but it's not their fault. They may be new, but at least most of them actually WANT to learn how to improve.
Trust the guy with 1500 Gamer points, you'll get a good team eventually. I had a 33-win streak today on my 500-point farming run. I've had I think 7 teams now with more than 10 wins. Just be patient and enjoy it as much as you can

Wow... maybe because it's SUPPOSED to be lighthearted and fun? A lot of people could say the problem stems from snobbish PvP'ers who treat it like a ladder spot is on the line and fail to take it for what it is, a lighthearted and fun little match.

Except that contrary to what many people in this thread think, for many good players losing constantly due to horrible allies is not and cannot be fun. Rather it is immensely aggravating. It is not reasonable to conclude that those who find it fun to lose constantly due to horrible allies have the correct theory on what constitutes "fun".

I mean obviously you're on the 'taking it seriously, would rather no new players were allowed in' side here, but given that we all know that's never going to happen you have a choice: Either play it and put up with losing sometimes, or don't play it, and play the organised PVP you like. It's just a question of which you want more.
Actually, thinking about it some more, maybe this intro to PvP for people who haven't tried it before will go some way to expanding the ranks of the PvP players as they learn - improving the playing field for all the over serious players in this thread. See what I mean?

There's nothing wrong with taking the snowball fight seriously. People want to win, and you get tangible rewards for it. Almost anyone who honestly enjoys competition is going to be frustrated by playing with people that aren't of a similar mentality or skill level. I don't personally think there's anything wrong with going in there and having casual fun, but (for lack of a nicer way to put it) I don't want us to be on the same team. Hence why I think having a TA-version of snowball fighting would help.
The most serious problem plaguing snowball fighting is the number of afkers and super-slow-loaders (which isn't their fault, I know). The AFKing baffles me, because you no longer earn anything for losing (to my knowledge). Joining a snow fight and then just sitting there not only wastes everyone else's time, it wastes yours as well.
And as for newbies and PvE-only players - a look at the skills and a few games of experience should be all you need to be competitive. I've had a lot of people spam snowballs at me while I had Ice Breaker up. I've had people stand there trying to hit me with a snowball while dazed and hexed while I repeatedly interrupt them (due to the Snow Down the Shirt). You can't really excuse this with inexperience - it's just plain stupidity. Look at the skills, use your brain.

Already got the Glad title, Skillz title woulda been cool too and it's not available in TA. Plus til today Snowball Arena was only place to get CC shards (hence it wasn't so much a "choice" before today if one wanted to earn CC shards) but thankfully it no longer is. Definitely don't play in Snowball Arena since that change, but it would be better if everyone could enjoy it, serious/good and non-serious/bad players alike. But that won't happen with the current way of "lump 'em all together and expect it to be fun for everyone".
Also since it's so new/bad player centric in Snowball Arena, then the Arena should be geared towards goals that players like that can somewhat handle. And if it is meant to be "lighthearted", then it would be reasonable for it not to contain gameplay concepts that require serious tactics, skill and teamwork to perform competently. ie: Remove all the present running because they can't handle that, not by a longshot. What's wrong with a straight up deathmatch style of snowball fight that everyone could enjoy and would render a lot of the reasonable beefs about the issue irrelevant.

Don't blame people who take the snowball fights seriously. Blame the title that it can give players. "Skillz", "Pro Skillz". Fun to have under your character.
My guildmate and I wants the title badly. coz it'll be a slap on all haters faces if they see our in game characters with MATH and "Skillz" in it. lmao.
and agreed with Navaros. it requires some "R9+ Relic Running PvP Skills" (not my words, man).

That being said, it's also not fun when your idiot teammates body block you because they don't realize I can't phase through them like in PvE. But other than that, I think the whole title deal makes people take it a lot more seriously. It's a double-edged sword I guess.

One time I had a guy going circles around the Young Children by Dwayna's side and it took the guy like 30 seconds to get by me with some help from 2 teammates.

what i really mean is that you need skills to win snowball arena. good body blocks, runner support, using the right skills and such.

Took two matches to figure out how to win: Move in one nice, tightly-packed group and pummel the person running the present. Or if you have the present, pummel anyone chasing them.
And of course, if you wind up getting the 10-second disease that spreads to your teammates and cancels hidden rock, just go back to ToB and rejoin until you get the AOE cripple instead. :P

I suck at the snowball fights but they are fun. It'd be nice if they applied the same logic to get rid of leachers in other areas (not participating in the battle means no xp, etc I know there's another thread about that) to snowball fights so the losers can get some reward again. Just because I suck at the game doesn't mean I don't try it. The loser rewards were removed because of leachers.. How about applying some brainpower to it instead of brute force and not give those things to people leaching in a corner somewhere.. If it works in one place,m it should work in another. Gaile discuessed it the other day - if oyu don't participate in some way you don't get xp - same thing..

The snowball arena is supposed to be fun.
Let me repeat that.
The snowball arena is supposed to be fun.
Last year, I had just started playing. I came out of presearing, into a snow-covered Ascalon City, and, while exploring this new, post searing world, I encounterd a snowball fights NPC. "Hmm, that looks fun", I thought to myself. So, I joined, played a few games, probably played quite badly, and had fun.
This year, I am a more experienced player, and win at least as often as I lose. However, whether I'm winning 5-0 with a stellar team, winning or losing close matches 5-4 or 4-5, or getting smashed after getting paired up either with newer team mates or against a experienced opponents, I am having fun.
Thanks ArenaNet for this excellent, fun mini-game.

I really miss the random presents they did in the matches last year. I loved that you got one when you turned a present in and when your team won. The candy cane shards seem like a bummer to get...maybe it was just the anticipation of opening the gift and hoping it was a candy cane...I dunno...either way I find myself less interested in playing the snowball fights this year because of it, and I was really looking forward to it. I have talked about the snowball fights for months. I think there were a lot less afkers when you got some kind of reward for turning presents in too...there was a good reason to be at keys and participating. Anyone else find themselves not as interested because of that?

This was my first time doing snowball fights, and I enjoyed it. It was a little frustrating, getting teams with one person just standing there, or quitting after he decided that he got stuck with a bunch of noobs.
I think they should have paired the teams up better, take the list of teams ready to start a match and sort them by consecutive wins, and pair them from the top, that way, the newly formed teams will most likely play another newly formed team, and the team with 30 wins will play the team with 29 wins, and one of them will defiantely be broken up.
Makes the game funner for everyone, I think

I don't think losing is very fun. Particularly, losing because my teammates are incompetent.
It's frustrating, but I watch the behavior of my teammates for the first 20 seconds of a match. If I have people on my team who are clearly incompetent or retarded, it's back to GToB to retry until I get a team that's competent or I get impatient and quit.
Harsh, but the only way to play to keep from raging out.
Peace,

Aww, come on, i am sure everyone wants to see others turn into green raging hulks of fury after watching their team mates take the gift to the wrong side of the map, not pick up gifts at all, stand perfectly still the entire match, walk around and do nothing, or my personal favorite necro suicide themselves constantly at full health. That is the whole point of fun games like this, ruin everyone else's fun except your own. If others are participating in that fun, all the better right?
It would be interesting if there were a TA version of this, even though i doubt i would benefit much from it. The aspect i would be most interested in, would be what would people choose to bring, if they had the option to choose 4 professions to work together.

If the drop rate of CCS was half way decent outside of arena, then you would have fewer PvE players there. All the "noobs" your refering to are likely those who are only PvPing becuase the shards will not fall in any appreciable level.
Further, the official wikis are extremely unclear. Nothing about this Wintersday makes any sense. As for instance, the getting of a hat - traditionally something you could get both versions of. Now wiki says you will only get one from whoever rules the day. So, if wiki is right then everyone will get the same hat or get screwed. If you want a Grenth hat and Dwayna wins - too bad.
It is "winding me up" bad enough I have left the game twice today. Why - because playing has no value. The quests do not allow you to get enough to be of any value for the hours they take to get done. Teams in the arenas will play well for one round or two and then fall apart. Only the PvP standard players are getting winning streaks, not casual or regular PvE players (the general bastard children of ANets clients). And if the damn thing is just for a laugh why in the hell are all the benefits so restricted. (Easy - because it is more of this Eliteness garbage we are always force-fed, as if the professional PvP player or Farmer puts their panties on with gold trim and a twinkle-nose.) Things that are fun are not things that are restricted, a keep-away game, etc. This is perhaps the worst Wintersday yet. But then I remember being able to actually get Peppermint CCs when you played - and at a rate that was worth bothering to farm.

Anyways, the "Skillz" title is the absolute stupidest title this game has to offer, and I puke everytime I see a moron running around with it. I try to keep the "leet" internet crap away from myself as much as possible, and I especially don't want to see it follow me into a fantasy based game of all places. Hence, no more local chat. It's too bad that this forum is rife with those inane stupidities I hate so much (QQ, leet, skillz, among others).
Bah, I hate 90% of you based on this alone.

I don't understand the whole mindset of, "this is for fun, so you can't play to win". Incompetence - yes, including my own - irritates me in any activity, fun or not. In doing anything, I far prefer if everyone involved, including my opponents, was actually good at it. That's what *makes* things fun. Playing with newbies and/or morons is just a chore.
As for the OP, the difficulty in finding a team and getting wins is completely offset by the fact that if you ever *do* get a good team, you win until you get tired of it and quit. The odds of ever seeing another good team in there, even after 100 games, is phenomenally low.

the snowball fight is supposed to be FUN not a pvp leet area etc....many of the people doing it have NEVER done pvp and with attitudes like the OP's many of them wont afterwards either. I wish that they wouldnt allow pvp people into the snowball fights so that the pve'ers could have fun without being called horrible names! or make an area of the snowball fight JUST for those pvp people who need that whatevertheheckitis from killing off ........
many of these 'noobs' may be looking at the skills for the first time as well...they arent the standard pvp or pve skillbars and unless you have played them before its all quite new (or if you changed characters you get new skills or if you have changed sides even!). Give people a chance its only a game.
Its bad enough that many of the people playing are just learning the game, but then to be called names just makes you NOT want to play----and thats NOT what the snowball fight is for....if you want a leet team go play ta, ra or whatever the heck pvp play, and leave the snowball area to those of us wishing to just have a good time---not see how many wins we can get.
Wintersday is just fun, its not about winning.

Edit: Bah! And I suck at quoting, but I can't be bothered with fixing it. Good Luck.
Edit again: I fixed it, so there!
Pss: Just saw Avarre's comment on how old this thread is.
