There are still a few around there, though I'd advise you to buy Nightfall (third chapter) first, as most people are there right now. An extra is that you'll be able to enjoy the Wintersday event a bit as well that way.

There are still people playing in Prophecies though.

Yeah, buy Nightfall. The Wintersday event is a lot easier and faster to get to than if you boughter chapter 1.

There are lots of people still playing the first game, and there always will be. NIghtfall will die down just like factions, but if you want a game you'll never regret buying, get the first one.

The only difference with prophecies is that you may find it harder to find a group as compared to a year ago. However, the henchmen are good enough for the missions and don't go AFK on you.

Good luck.

there are always people there because to be honest prophecies is the best chapter

That's debatable. However, if the OP wants to participate in the Wintersday festivities, it's much quicker to begin with Nightfall than Prophesies, since it takes about 10 minutes to get to Kamadan, as opposed to doing pre-searing before getting to Old Ascalon. Plus, you have some heroes you can use when you decide to go back and do Prophesies.

Just looking around our guild, the number playing in Tyria is more than double the number of those in Cantha and Elona combined. Each campaign has its advantages but there's nothing to beat the beauty of the original Ascalon, so even those who've been playing for two years still periodically create new characters there.
