...the question or issue I see is how would they transfer all your account date onto your computer. I suspect that information would be huge and in excess of a few gigabites.
The game content, they could release on a cd or dvd. But they obviously couldnt put peoples accounts onto cds for security and because of the numbers.
I question if they even could do this, because Anet has said on a few occassions that its impossible to single out one account from the database and manipulate it.
For instance when people are hacked or scammed.
So I expect if this was to happen, we would loose all your accounts and have to start a fresh.

/signed if GW closes, but I think it is more likely that Anet will keep adding new DX snazziness for people with new computers, while retaining the faster-but-suckier option for those with older computers.
They probably could actually. Anet can't manipulate one account in the database, but there is no reason why the client can't save a copy of the information it is accessing. For example, you can save 'build templates' from your Skills menu. There is no reason that I can see why Anet couldn't (given a OMGDOOMSDAY!!!!1!1one scenario) enable a saving of 'character template' containing inventory, quests and missions completed etc. I don't think that's likely though, if Anet needed more people buying GW they could always do a 360 port :P

i already suggested this idea earlier, cept i added the idea of letting us create OUR OWN servers

A heightmap area the size of Lion's Arch takes up over 20 MB of space. downloading the maps is one thing, running them on your computer is the tricky part.
For one thing, GW servers will never go down. If people stop playing them and Anet decides not to release more expansions, there will be more than enough leftover server space fow people to play on.

What's with these pessimistic topics? GW is young compared to a lot of MMORPGs around. UO has been around for more than 9 years. And GW does not seem to be going downhill, so this topic is useless at this time.

I think I have read that when Anet releases GW2 they will still prolong GW but no more Expansions and Chapters like they would just entertain Holiday Events and etc.
MithranArkanere
I'd like that. But I think that, if done, would be done by third party GW fans.

I dont know WHY it would shut down... Starcraft is still up. And hackers do this. But were not all hackers.

GW won't be closing soon. It is extremely successful and will remain that way. Look at Starcraft, WC3, and even Diablo. Still going fairly strong, and two of those games are 10+ years old now.

i think they should release server code... since we can already logon to diff auth servers we can run our own!!!!!
=HT=Ingram
If that day ever comes, and somehow I don't think it will be within the next decade at least... Anet would release a FDS for the server side with a client patch to connect to separate server IPs like when you connect to the alpha server now. If Anet didnt then the fans would. It would not be long before it would be out there. Indeed thousands play WoW on Free Dedicated Servers now, Illegally yes... but its there. So The same will be true of GW if their servers ever disappeared.
Its also worth noting that the FDS for WoW was part of the original beta of WoW, and Blizzard for whatever reason decided to not allow them anymore.
GW never had such a public release, but there is the Alpha server testbed and that is what would probably get leaked or released if that day ever came.
Again the liklyhood of that is so far in the furture at this point its not even a worry. Indeed I fully expect another expansion after GW:EN and after GW2 is released for GW 1. I figure Anet will want to keep that biannual income flowing, so they will setup some expansion schedule to allow for one expansion per version a year, and that will allow for two fan purchases per year one in summer one in winter...
If anet is smart that is how it will keep GW 1 and 2 active for a long time to come.

One thing to add to topic:
~All "in-store" content will be available for any character during offline PVE.~
Not to mention all the hats and exclusive items anyone missed in previous events.

Converting the game to single player would probably be a huge challenge. Much more realistic (and better for players!) is for them to opensource the server-side code so people could host their own servers.
yitjuan
Could do it like SWGemu did, write all your own server code.

sounds nice for when GW really died (GW dying does NOT sound nice, but it'll happen)
maybe they can make it so that its either on a cheap server, or make it offline with maybe LAN mode (would be fun playing with RL people even after its "death")
then people can still play good old GW without losing their stuff
then making your own future hats?
i hope they'll do something like this, IF it ever becomes that bad

There is no such thing as 'necroing' in Sarrdelac. (Well, unless you are Munne or Kasha)
As long as the suggestion is still applicable to the game, it's ok to bring more insights into it.

Even then, people won't get access to their current accounts, and will have to start anew.

Or maybe it's the key factor here.
Most people still in the game are either:
- Aficionados that feel some special bond with their accounts and characters
- New players rushing for HoM rewards
Neither would have any significant incentive to start again, the former missing what they created, the latter lacking any significant purpose in playing on emulated, unofficial servers. Aficionados are also those that are most vocal about initiatives for future preservation of the game: they do care about the game as a software, but what they want preserved on top of anything is their game experience.
Still, that won't prevent anyone from trying to code some server emulator. I for one won't be using it: Guild Wars has been fun as a game, but now got boring and repetitive for me. I'm sure it wouldn't feel any better without my much loved account.

Wow how time does fly. Man, the things we have done in game since this thread first came into being.
But anyway, Gill makes a good point. My reason for having supported this notion over the years is to be able to keep playing from the point I am at now and not have to start from scratch. I have a ton of characters at various points through the campaigns and would like to finish all the content with all my characters at some point in the future.
We can hope that it never needs to come to it, but should that day come, I do hope that Anet can bring allow us to continue to enjoy the game with our characters for as long as we desire to do so.

after GW2 has gotten well off it's feet, and perhaps some resources are freed up, do something like they did in the last Star Wars MMO, where there was a final battle like right before they shut down the servers. Except......still keep the servers open =)

on the fence on this one....yeah I have been playing for almost 8 years (on yes, aug 28) and yeah I am kinda attached to my kids (all of them on all of my accounts), however; when its over I plan to give up playing games altogether so I would rather they did NOT offer this (its very hard for an addict to quit on their own, but with the thing of their addiction completely gone, its oh, so much easier!).
I will keep playing until I either complete everything I wish (at my rate that is about 5 more years at least)...or until they turn off the servers, at which point I will shed a tear and move on.

Anet could easily allow access to that if they wanted. If not, custom servers could easily let you start with lvl 20 PvE characters or boost XP/drop rates or make a cheap ecto/armbrace/zkey merchant so that grind is reduced. HoM and associated account-wide progress stuff can already be directly imported from the online HoM viewer.
Gill Halendt
Open access to their databases from unofficial servers? No way.
Sure thing.
But, would you really do everything AGAIN, even with all those facilitations, in a game you probably know perfectly well already?
What for, to have a precarious clone of your once great account on official servers?
Offline play sounds like a better option, but I doubt they'll ever spend resources on it when keeping the game running online is cheap as dirt.

Private servers are always a terrible thing to play on.
All that doesn't matter. I don't want to keep my chars for their wealth or the things they have completed. I want them cause they have a story, cause I have attachment to them, memories. So that would solve nothing.
To make it offline they shouldn't need to release the codes (and releasing them would be even bedder as part of it is used for gw2 too) and everybody could keep their chars. Sure you'd lose pvp and pugs, but it's not like they're very alive now, and I can't imagine in future. Just enable lan option so we can still play with friends.
Really, I'd die to see this implemented.

The question is, how much space would be needed on my computer to hold all the needed server side files to run the game as single player? Also, where would these files be stored for those doing a "first time, full install?"
