Hi everyone, I am new to these forums and so while I am here I would be very greatfull if someone could help me get Guild Wars started.

I got Guild Wars as a Christmas present around 1-2 days ago. I've heard quite a bit about this game, so was quite excited when I inserted my installer CD. The installation screen popped up and I choose "Install Guild Wars". I set the installation directory to a different one (another drive we more space) which went without a problem.

This is were my problem begins. The next step is that the installer says Guild Wars is "Downloading" something. At first I thought that was fine, because games come out with huge updates and everything. I decided to go out and take care of some stuff, so I left it "Downloading".

When I came back around 3 hours later, there was no change in the screen. I was a little worried by then, but decided to give it more time. So I went to bed while leaving the thing Downloading.

To my horror (

) I find that it is STILL at that same step in the installation. Then I knew something was not right. I had left it on all night (thats about what? 12+ hours) and nothing changed. Then I knew something was definetly wrong and decided to whine about it to you guys

The thing is my internet is working just fine. I can browse no problem with normal speed. I have a 54mps connection which I think is 1/2 of those 1mbit connections. My internet works just fine when I play other games though like World of Warcraft (which i quit btw), Bnet games, etc..

Also mind you the installer isn't "Not Responding". It there and it responds quite well. If you click it out, it exits gracefully without a hitch.

So I was just wondering if ANY of you could help me out with this problem. Guild Wars seems like an amazing game and it would be a shame if I couldn't play it.

er.. not much of a tech person but heres my 2 cents
1.r u behind a firewall
2.router (if any) port forwarded
3.did installation prompt to change disc?

u can also try this if all else fail;
download n execute GW client.

Actually I forgot to mention I turned off any firewall-ing software of any sort.

I forwarded port 6112 TCP for GWSETUP on my router so it isn't a problem with my router.

Also no, the installation did not prompt for the second disk. It goes from Install Guild Wars -> Choose directory -> Downloading and there it freezes (supposedly.)

Also I did try downloading with the client from the site but it doesnt work either (in fact it is going as we speak, its been 2-5 hours and still stuck on Downloading).

For those tech people out there I did a netstat and it showed multiple plaync.com addresses active but returning either FIN_WAIT_2 or TIME_WAIT. Forgive me if i didn't really explain that well.

Sounds like you are behind a firewall, or the correct ports are not forwarded for your router. Other than that, I don't know.

My game uses ports 2042-2052 is the highest I've seen. (It may go higher) and the remote port of 6112. But the remote port is unimportant. I don't have any ports forwarded for GW, and it works fine, though I have had to for other games. I don't use a router though. (Dial up ftl)

Well thanks for the replies everyone.

I guess I will just have to "wait it out". But one last thing =P Guild wars came out approximately a year ago? So how much files would I need to download If i came with a fresh install? If I have to dl 4gb+ files then maybe that is why it is taking so long? Because there is so much to download?
However if that is the case then how come I don't notice even a slight reduction in browsing speed, downloading speed, etc.

GW will only download things that you need atm. Every time you go to a new area, it downloads that area and stores it in your gw.dat file so that you don't have to download it again. So no, you do not need to download 4gb worth of files. More likely somewhere around 200mb. When it downloads is it getting any done at all? I imagine the screen you're seeing is the gw client getting everything that it needs. I think it should tell you how many files remain and how much you have downloaded. Whether or not those two change would be helpful information. Though, it is obvious that something is wrong. 12 hours is longer than i would expect it to take on 56k.

na the thing is its just says Downloading... with those 3 dots. And im not on 56k :P I'm on a DSL line. Well thanks anyways, Do you guys think I should send an email to ArenaNet about this problem?

Hrm, I'm kindof stumped. You might try emailing anet to see what they say. I would say try to download it form www.guildwars.com but you already tried. that. Really not sure whats going on.

Many DSL modems have an internal firewall. Forward the necessary port at the modem or bridge your modem and see if that clears up your connection to ANet.

Well nothing has worked and so I give up. I'm going to refund the game as soon as I have time. I didn't open the access key package (I didn't even get to the installation remeber) so I guess they can accept it.

Even if you have turned off your router you need to be sure that you have windows XP allow GW.exe access to the internet. I know that may seem a bit noobish as you sound like you are quite tech friendly.. but it is often an overlooked step.

Another thing you can try is to accept the default installation path instead of changing it...just to see if that would somehow affect it...although it shouldn't but I have seen wierdererer things :P

don't give up to easily because GW is a fantastic game!!

Guild Wars does not support the use of a proxy server. Your Internet connection must have no restrictions on TCP ports 6112 and 80 in order for you to connect to the game. If your connection uses a proxy server please speak with your Internet service provider and ask if there is a way that you can bypass the proxy. Unfortunately, if this cannot be done then you may not be able to connect to the game.

I am pretty sure that 6112 and port 80 are only for GuildWars. And im sure that my fierwall is off. Anyways i could post screenshots? And you guys couild maybe tell me if im forwarding right.

Also about the proxy thing, i'm not sure if my ISP does use a proxy but it shouldn't be a problem. In the country im living in, there is only 1 sole provider of telecom services. And other people I know play Guild Wars without a hitch. And if it is a problem exclusive to me then i am screwed because there is no other ISP to turn to =).

I don't know, I don't think forwarding if your problem. As I have a number of friends that play GW and they are on broadband and they don't forward any ports. As I said before port 6112 is the remote port. IE not important. That is just the port on the remote machine that you are sending to, or receiving from.

As asked before, did you try without your router? Or a different one? Did you file a petition? Did you check the knowledge base?

If none of that helps, I say sacrifice a cow to the great computer god and hope he fixes it.....
