Need help choosing a profession

First, let me say sorry if this doesn't look right. I typed it in Notepad
so it might be kind of messed up.
I'm not very experienced in Guild Wars. I have a level 11 character in
Prophecies, a level 19 in Factions, and now a level 5 in Nightfall.
I didn't like Prophecies that much. I kept deleting my characters and
making new ones. In Factions, my character was an assassin...and about
10 seconds after I got on to the main island I was dead. My party and I
just couldn't stay alive.
And now I'm playing Nightfall with my Dervish. I have a pretty good
build, but the problem is that I tried it out in PvP...and it's not so
good. I can survive for a while, most of the time longer than my team,
but I don't really do that much damage. I usually kill about 1 enemy
with help from one of my team mates.
The same thing always happens to me -- I make a character, and usually
it's pretty good in PvE. Then I try it in PvE. It's never as "good" as
I would like it to be. And then there's my assassin, which just sucks
at everything. It's probably the worst assassin since I don't even have
Aura of Displacement or any good skills.
So, now I just make a character and delete it over and over again. I
really can't just stick to one build or profession.
For all of you that are too lazy to read that, you still might be able
to help me -- just start reading here.

fairly quickly and still be able to survive. Not a tank, like my
dervish was, but not the first one to die, either.
Here's an example: back when touch rangers were still kind of new, I
had one in PvP. That was my definition of "good" in PvP. I usually
killed at least 2 enemies before I died, yet I couldn't survive
longer than tanks.
I won 75% of the time with it. I could kill fast enough to put pressure
on the monk (if they had one). So, after I killed 2, the other 2 would
probably be trying to resurrect their team mates. If they tried, my
team mates and I would easily kill them. If they didn't try, we would still easily kill them.
So, as I said -- I'm looking for a profession that can kill
fairly quickly and still be able to survive a bit, like my touch ranger could.
Any advice is appreciated, although I know most of you won't even read this. Thanks anyway .

r u looking for a build in pvp or pve?
you cant have builds for both, they just dont work. because the monsters in pve dont have the brains of a player. you need a different build for each.

Hmm...I guess just for PvP then. That's the hard part for me.

Don't get discouraged right away. A lot of characters are weak until you get them decent skills and equipment, and some are harder than others to play in PvE--assassin is one of these. Either try to group with players or guildies if possible, or just take it a little slower and play defensive if you die too much. If you're playing an assassin, let the warriors/dervishes rush in before you do. This way, they will take most of the heat.
If you want to PvP, my first piece of advice is to make a PvP-only character if you haven't already. Don't use PvE characters for PvP unless they have perfect gear and all necessary skills. Learning GW PvP is challenging enough without shooting yourself in the foot by using non-max equipment.
Also, I'd recommend not deleting PvE characters that you've put any real time/effort into unless you absolutely hate the class or you need a character slot. I've made the mistake of deleting many ascended character with some money invested in them, simply because I got tired of the build I was using and didn't explore other options. Every class can be played in a variety of ways. If you're playing a necro and you discover you don't like being a minion master, for instance, don't delete it. Try a different buildm like hex spam or blood nukes/support. Chances are you'll find your niche after a little experimenting.

I've tried. That's how I test my builds to see if they're any good in PvP...and they all just fail and make me waste a bunch of faction buying the skills .
Although I like Guild Wars, I'm afraid that I might stop playing permanently if this keeps happening.
Also, my characters rarely make it past level 10 -- so I don't really put much time or effort in to them before deleting them. It's just annoying doing the same quests over and over just to find that your build doesn't perform the way you want it to.

I suck as a Warrior - compared to others - but I still find it fun from time to time. I agree that on paper, professions and builds seem very cool. On the actual battlefield, they don't seem to shine so well. I know myself that my builds don't perform as I would hope they would, but then again, they perform adequately enough for PvE.
I have 7 level 20 characters now (W/R, R/Mo, N/Me, Me/Mo, Mo/E, A/W, Rit/N) and my Paragon - level 11. I sympathize with your plyte, I also hate doing pre-seering quests, low level quests, and a few hard quests over and over again. I've done them so often, that I know the missions in Tyria & Cantha off by heart.
Anyway, you never need to invest much into your character until you hit level 20. I don't buy skills until then. So whatever comes free, is what I use until then. My death rates are getting lower and lower for each new character I play.
Just don't give up.
As for PvP, Rangers, Necromancers and Mesmers are great. Interupts, good damage, and never in the front lines (unless you play a melee/touch build).

Get one level 20, make a build, and then see if you like it. If you're level 10, you can't have a good build. As for your character, it depends. Do you like to play offensive, but still stay a bit in the backline? Make a ranger, or an offensive paragon. Do you like to play offensive but you want to be in the frontline? Make a warrior, assassins aren't good enough, and dervishes are too tanky for you. Do you like to nuke the crap out of things? Make an ele. Do you like to make your enemies angry, and do decent amounts of damage while putting pressure? Make a mesmer. Do you like to aid your party members? Make a monk, or a restoration rit.

Thanks everyone...I've decided to make a warrior. Hopefully that will work out for me.

A warrior is a solid choice for your 'first'(first good at least) character. they are pretty easy to play. just remember that you dont have much energy and you are not a monk. move on to more challenging classes once you get a feel for the game.

I am just surprised everyone says assasins suck I find they are awesome they can kill things amazingly quickly I went on Shing Jea Island solo with one and there wasnt much which lasted long enough to do much damage to me. I do have to admit though I am worried abotu the amount of other classes around that would be good as a secondary class. Yeh warrior monk is a good choice they are an absolute tank and can take a ton of damage and deal a ton damage to. Only problem is they are looking too good and I think that either monks or warriors should be nerfed as the combo is just frustratingly powerful and I cant think up any counter stategies against them apart from mesmers which can reduce there healing ability to nothing + assasin to weaken there armour and pound them with amazing amounts of damage in a short period of time.

assasins are good in the early areas of factions, but once you start fighting afflicted they get torn to pieces by the afflicted soul explosions.

I would recomend a W/R. They are wicked fun, can do a fair amount of dmg, don't take much dmg, and can have a cool pet to make them look 1337 lol
My first char was a W/R and its still me most loved and played character, even after 7 other lvl 20's
P.S. Assasin's are wicked fun, and when in a good PvP team can tear up, but for the latter parts of any chapter, they fall behind in the staying alive section without good armour and skills....

I'd strongly advise against making a PvE assassin if you are new to GW. They may seem cool, and they are, but I doubt if it will be worth the headaches. Warrior is a good choice for a starting character.
