Defining the term MAX
BHP
This probably seems like a pretty ridiculous thread, but since I was recently tore up by some guy in game for "my ignorance" I figured I would post this one here and see if someone could enlighten me.
Situation was as follows: Guy is advertising "WTB MAX Slashing Daggers". I ask him exactly what he is looking for, he replies "MAX daggers slashing dmg"
I show him an inscribable pair of elonian daggers req 11 that are max slashing damage 7-17.
He proceeds to belittle me with various refrains of "you stoopid noob" and "those not MAX, req 11"
To the best of my knowledge the term MAX is always used to denote that the weapon or item has the max stat for its type (dmg in the case of a weapon, energy in the case of a focus, armor in the case of a shield).
Also, from what I have read, an item requirement determines the level an attribute needs to be at to have it function at max damage/stat. If you have a req 8 item, the stats on the item don't go into overdrive because you have 13 points in an attribute. A req 8 max damage item and a req 13 max damage item both perform the same if you have 13 points in the required attribute line.
In his parting salvo, I was instructed to "do some research on weaps" because my lack of knowledge was "just sad" .
I'll be the first to admit I am not an expert in all things guild wars, but I do my best to educate myself on the things players need to know to get by. This encounter was frustrating and kind of sucked the fun out of an otherwise good day of gaming. So, anyone out there want to take a stab at educating me on the meaning of the word MAX as used by the buyer described above and what it has to do with the items requirements?
This was the first time I have seen someone lose it over whether an item was MAX or not, and since the buyer in question wanted to berate me rather than explain himself and/or educate me, I came here to do the necessary research.

Well, first off that guy is an ass hole, and I wish people like him didn't even play.
Secondly, I've always considered max to mean max damage... maybe i've been wrong for 19 months
If he said perfect then it would have to have a perfect dmg mod or inherent mods but even that doesn't include req in it...
as far as I'm concerned max means max damage.

You had it right, max is max is max.
It just didnt meet his req that he wanted so he got all bent out of shape.

Thanks.
I appreciate the replies.
Good to know I wasn't completely off in my understanding of trade terminology.

Yep, "Max" has always meant maximum damage. That's the easy one, and the guy was a moron.

I bet this guy would think that it was only MAX if it was Gold as well.

Max damage on daggers is indeed 7-17 afaik, but the daggers could also have a + 15% modification ( +15^50, +15 enchanted).
That's what I think are the max damage weapons people are looking for.
Edit:
The req only makes the item more or less wanted, but has nothing to do with max imho.

thanks for the added input.
For the record, the daggers I offered him were gold max damage (slashing, not piercing) req 11. Elonian daggers, they were not 15^50, but were inscribable and clean.
With the often overabundance of perfect inscriptions and the availability of them at low prices I don't see where anyone who isn't new to the game and strapped for cash would be concerned about the inherent mod on an inscribable melee weapon. And as stated earlier I don't see where the req came into play.
I was so shocked by this guys reaction that I actually felt dumb for a minute, like I was missing something both stupid and obvious regarding the daggers in question being MAX slashing daggers.
Funniest thing about the whole incident was that the topic of price never came up beyond him saying he would pay 9k max for a pair of max slashing daggers. So it wasn't even an issue of me asking too much for them.

Guildmaster Cain
Usually people that resort easily to calling other peoples names, are the ones that stooopid/noob/ignorant/whatever. Dont feel insulted by people like these. He was probably a 9-year old Dutch kid. (learned this by experience, from my sad, sad countrymen)
If he wanted to buy something with a specific mod/skin/req he should have noted that. Max is just the maximum damage, without any mods.

Look at it this way.
You'll learn what the good or "MAX" weapons are in a day.
But the guy will still be an ass a year from now.

Swinging Fists
Now that you mention that he offered 9k for the "max" daggers, it sounds like he was just instigating people to PM him so he can flame them, as he did. As everyone else has said, he is a moron.
Stupid Shizno
as far as my guidlines go for selling
MAX - the max dmg (eg. WTS MAX SWORD (the sword will do 15-22 dmg)
PERFECT - req 8-9 max dmg, 15^50 dmg mod
UNHEARD OF - Req7 Max DMG (i sold a req7 15-22 wingblade in LA for 95k)

If the guy wasn't a freaking idiot, he would have been saying "WTB MAX LOW REQ DAGGERS"
Also, "Perfect" is Req 8 or 9, 15^50, 20/20, +30. For a weapon, anyway. A shield's "Perfect" is -5 20% / +30.
Even though neither of those are "perfect" that's what the sellers deem "perfect".
