Player event: Saint Patrick’s Day
Friday
Without Guild Wars degenerating into a theological battlefield, there is no way to please everybody and someone is always going to be offended/ upset/ angry/ complaining.
A-net is entitled to be as "politically Correct" as it wants to be. It's their game and they can add whatever content they wish. Players are also entitled to make whatever player events they wish (even if it entails being drunk for 24 hours, in-game weddings anyone?) - Players prerogative!! And if any event offends your sensibilities the simple solution is "don't participate" - I didn't see many people "NOT" participate in Halloween because of it's pagan origins... did you?
My point is simply that you have the right to NOT participate in anyone's event if you don't like the concept, BUT equally you do not have the right to dictate that everyone else in-game comply with your personal views.
Here's luck to you Chieftain - I hope your event will be a blast, I wish I could attend (European servers for me). Have one on me!!
Edited: to remove as much flame inducing content as possible...

Thanks for the support guys, and to the nay sayers well you’re entitled to your opinion. But I would ask that we keep the attention to the event instead of turning this into a flame contest.
I have been kicking around this idea since I started playing GW. Why can't players set up events a have fun from time to time? A-net does a great job with its events and I have no complaints about them. I understand they have to keep everything PC because they market to a world wide audience and they have more pressing matters like keeping a six month schedule. Knowing this, it is unlikely they will create more holidays.
I have also been thinking about everyone who does not have Prophecies.
What would everyone think about moving the celebration to the Greater Temple of Balthazar?
In doing so everyone could attend and the event would be more accessible to PvE and PvP players.

So Great Temple of Balthazar International District 1? I'll be there.
Chieftain Heavyhand
Was thinking more like American district 1, but I am open to suggestions.
Gonzo
You're hosting it in Great Temple so everybody can attend, yet you're holding it in AD 1? That doesn't make sense, make it ID then.
Didn't we have a mesmers event in the maguuma jungle on last years St. Pattys day?

ID it is then.
Not sure about last year didn't start playing till the first of June 2006.
This event is for everyone no mater what class, guild, nationality, religion, or anything else.
Come one come all just wear green and enjoy.

AD1 in the Temple gets kinda hairy sometimes... agreed it needs to be in ID1..
Guild member told me about this and I am definetly coming. I should be working on tier 2 of the Drunkard by then hopefully...

Sounds fun! I have one character at Drunkard already, and have enough spiked eggnog to get 2 more there...this is a good way to get them there without hazarding my game playing experience (e.g. Random Arena Drunkfest - here I come!).

OK so we got the where nailed down.
Greater Temple of Balthazar, International District
The when is looking like from:
Midnight GMT to Midnight PDT on March 17th.
Party Title:
Saint Patrick's Day Party
Now we come to games and events.
Events:
I thought a Wearing of the Green Parade, basically a Congo line, would be cool to do in places like Lions Arch, Kaineng City and Kamadan. Players zone to one of the three port cities (what ever port city you want to go to). Everyone meets up around where the Henchies in each town then proceed to drink play games, gather support buy Wearing Green and inviting others to join in. After 1o or 15 minuets the parade begins by forming a Congo line and the procession makes a circle around the town. Then travels back to the Great Temple of Balthazar.
I was thinking this event could take place every 8 hours (to allow time to farm ale and clovers) :
GMT: (3-17-07) 12:00AM, 8:00AM, 4:00PM, 12:00AM, 8:00AM (3-18-07)
EDT: (3-16-07) 7:00PM, 3:00AM, 11:00PM, 7:00PM, 3:00AM (3-18-07)
CDT: (3-16-07) 6:00PM, 2:00AM, 10:00AM, 6:00PM, 2:00AM (3-18-07)
MDT: (3-16-07) 5:00PM, 1:00AM, 9:00AM, 5:00PM, 1:00AM (3-18-07)
PDT: (3-16-07) 4:00PM, 12:00AM, 8:00Am, 4:00PM, 12:00AM (3-18-07)
If these times are not lining up let me know and I'll adjust.
Drunken Random Arena. Now that sounds like a blast. I think we should do this in raids. So we are not interrupting the random arena all day, but at random What this means is that after the Parade we all meet back up in the International district 1 at the Great Temple of Balthazar and continue on with the drinking and merriment. During that time we should all form up a raiding party to travel to the Random Arena in Battle Isles and play games of course. Meaning that after a while we all try to travel to international district 1 of the Random arena and begin Drunken Random Arena battles.
There is also Drunken GvG to consider.
Mosh Pit Dance Party players form a huge tightly packed mass around the trophy at the Temple of Balthazar and dance and randomly perform emotes, this can also be done, well where ever.
What about quest help called The Drunken Generals, this is where those who need help with quest ask for aid, only catch we'll all be drunk I like the idea of two or three players with heroes setting back drinking while their minions clear the area and the players pick up the left over swag that drops. Players can and should also form teams and do quest.
Don't Forget about.
Lucky Weekend
Starting at Noon PST on Friday, March 16, PvP players will earn double Faction and Gladiator Points in Arenas. Plus, with a bit o' luck, PvE players may find a unique drop or two in missions and explore able areas. These opportunities will run through 11:59 p.m. PDT on Sunday, March 18.
Lucky's Charms players form farming groups and try to collect up as many Shamrock Ales and 4 leaf cloves as possible while Drunk.
There could also be AA Meetings where players form teams and discuss the reason they created the character they did, why they chose their second profession, what is your goal in GW, why do you play the game, and what not and so forth…
If anyone has ideas for other events speak up and lets get this all hashed out.
Games:
I liked the Simon says the Mad King plays I also Like the game that the guys In Nightfall play the emote one and drinking one at the festival but we could combine a few and call it Drunken Emote Master. Players form teams of 8 using team chat they chose a leader by rolling die. The leader is Drunken Emote Master. The Drunken Emote Master types Emote says, whatever the players do it, if not they Drink, if the Emote Master types dance and players do then they loose and have to drink. And so on and so forth until some one falls down when they do so they should leave or be kicked from the team. After that the players roll die again to choose a new Drunken Emote master, this proceeds until there are two players left on the team. The last two persons standing play Rock, paper, scissor to decide who wins.
Hide and Speak when people arrive in town and after making sure they are falling down drunk then whisper them at random until they find you by inviting you to their team and when they do, your player drinks.
Red Rover While in the port cities( because there are no moving NPC’s at the Greater Temple of Balthazar) drumming up support for the Saint Patties Day Parade players form teams. These teams try to body block NPC’s. The goal is to inhibit their movement completely. After success, dancing ensues.
Rock, Paper, Scissors Players form teams and play RPS when a player loses they drink. This is done till some one says I’m the King of the World when this occurs that player is the winner.
Anyone else have an idea for any more games?
I would like to request from A-Net one thing how about dying the water in game, or at least around the Great Temple of Balthazar on Saint Patrick's Day Green?

Sounds like fun. Some drunken GVG would be hilarious I think. Maybe some drunken PvE could be done also.
Also another game we could is a simple drinking contest. Two people start drinking first one to sit down loses.
I also like the idea of maybe changing the title of the event. Somehow make it fit more with GW lore. Maybe it's a dwarven drinking celebration?
Count me in, I'll be sure to save up my booze.

To keep with GW Lore the event could be called Balthazar's Day.
For it was on this day that Balthazar appeared before the weary warriors to lift their spirits and aid them in their struggle against their enemies. Balthazar's aid led the warriors to victory over their foes. To honor Balthazar for his support that day the warriors drank and celebrated. They lifted their pints of ale to Balthazar till not one was left standing and wore green to show their devotion to him.
Each year they returned to the Great Temple of Balthazar in remembrance of that day and to show their support of the god Balthazar by dying their armor green, drinking till they have had their fill, playing games, dancing, joining in randomly selected teams to fight for Balthazar’s favor, and holding Balthazar’s Day Parades in the major port cities of the land.
As these warriors were lost to the sands of time and traveled into the mist the Zaishen Order keep the tradition. Each year they hold Balthazar's Day and all who wish to join in the merriment are invited to the Great Temple of Balthazar to engage in the drinking, games, and events.
How does that sound?

Lets try to keep this active folks the only way to get the word out about this event is by word of mouth.
Things we could use:
Town Criers (supporters of the event who spread news of this event by posting in local chat in towns, arenas, outpost, and mission areas across all three chapters)
People to drum up support within their guilds and alliances.
People to voice their opinion and keep this topic active.
What do we need, what do we not need?
What kind of games can we play?
What kind of events should we have?
This is a players event. I am just moderating the specifics so there is not mass confusion when the Celebration starts. Your ideas and suggestions will shape this event. So keepem coming we only have 2 more months to get everything figured out.
This Event will be on Saint Patrick's day while we celebrate Saint Pats the people of Tyria, Canthan, Elona, and .... Celebrate Balthazar's Day for his aid in the last world War of the lands were his rallying saved the Human race from certain annihilation.
Now we have Saint Patrick's Day:
From http://www.st-patricks-day.com/about_saintpatrick.asp
"Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.
So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.
In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!"
I underlined the American aspect of this day because that is what we are doing on Saint Patrick’s Day, I doubt we'll get any rivers dyed but we can do lots of other things.

Don't be confused this is still going to be Saint Pats but if that "offends" some one then they can call it well whatever,
here is what I propose:
Saint Patrick's Day March 17
Starting at Midnight and running till Midnight if you wish I'll be on as long as I can hold out
I'll keep the Events and games simple. Mostly because in "Drunk" mode it is hard to do much and to keep everything fun.
Event Info Here:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...9&postcount=49
I know most of the events are PvP oriented, but there is Drunken General to participate in.
Like I've been saying this event is for us players to kick back and have fun I don't want allot of "work" type things going on. Gathering up items and things for collectors seems too much like work. I want us to have fun.
This is for us in the GW community to get together and enjoy our selves. We can all come together and work on getting our Drunken or Booze hound titles together and while doing so find things to do that are sociable and fun.

Hey - instead of Drunken Random Arena, if there are several of us doing that - we should do Drunken Team Arena. That way teams of four drunk people can get together, and hopefully face another drunk team of four...
Chieftain Heavyhand
That sounds like a good idea, but everyone doesn't have Team Arena open and Random Arena keeps people from taking advantage of the situation. If one team gets into the arena and does not drink then they have a definite advantage over those who are taking part in the festivities.
The Random Arena fights are just a suggestion. Mostly I just want to work toward a Drunken Title. Like I said this event is going to be for fun. A chance for us all to gather together and socialize while working toward titles.
If people want to show up and sell booze that is fine, but keep the trade talk in the trade chat section.

I'll definitely be there, probably drunk IRL just to add some more excitement to the game!
I don't see the problem with holding a St. Patrick's Day celebration for several reasons. This is a community organized event with (so far) no connection to ANet. Participation in the event is purely voluntary, but is still open to all that are interested. You don't necessarily have to be a Christian to enjoy the event, as I'm sure many non-Christians enjoyed Wintersday and many non-Chinese enjoyed the Dragon Festival, modeled on Chinese New Year.
As for events, I love the idea of drunken PvP. I think it'd be even more fun fighting against a non-drunk team, taking over the arenas for the day. Also, periodic raids to major towns like LA, Kaineng and Kamadan to drunkenly type in the chat channel and cause general mayhem sounds like a good idea as well.
I'll spread this to my alliance when I get on tonight. I'm sure they'd be interested in going!

I think drunken PvP is the norm in RA anyway, judging by the quality of play there.

No matter it's origins like most holidays Saint Patrick’s Day has been Americanized here.
In America St. Pat’s is about wearing green, four leave clovers and drinking alcohol but in honor of Saint Patrick we will wear green, we will aid those in need with quest like good missionaries, who help all in need, and we will drink, be merry, and enjoy life.
What I am proposing is that any and all who want to spend some time on St. Pat’s gaining points toward your drunkard title and blow off some of your holiday goodies show up and have a good time. I’m sure their will be venders, but guys there is a trade section, so keep the trade banter there.

However this is a game. This is not real life and if I can get some kids or adults to set around on a computer playing a game instead of partying and drinking in real life then I feel like I did a good thing. |
Yeah, I won't be joining in with your celebration (just in case nobody got that impression yet). As I said, March 17 is my birthday, so I'm planning on being drunk all day. Especially if it's a Saturday. People complain about condoning alcohol abuse, but it's not like you're saying people should drink all the time. Just on this day. And if you think it's wrong, and incorrect to say that St Patrick's Day is a day for celebrating with alcohol, that's alright. Instead say that Mitchell's Day is a day for celebrating with alcohol. I won't mind.
PS I will probably be online at some point during the day. So feel free to give me gifts. Ivory Thistle is my character.

We plan to get away with this because the game has alcohol in it and titles to go along with it. The game is 14+ because it has alcohol in it. Have you not read the parental warning? Violence and alcohol use are pointed out as the reason for the game’s rating.
It is all in good fun. What I am trying to do is get some kind of community togetherness going in game. Which is a thing I believe GW is lacking right now.

Seems like others are planning St. Patties day events as well.

I stepped on a toe or two by posting a link to this discussion on the other St. Pat's day event so here is a link to the other event for those who are not interested in a battle Isle event:

I think these are the guys who had an all Mesmer party last year.
Everyone is invited this year if you own Prophecies.

For those of you who don't know Who St Patrick was or what St. Patrick’s day is about in Europe and America. You can read the previous post in this thread to find some information, and I posted a link to a St. Patrick’s Day website in an earlier discussion.
This event will be a more Americanized version of St. Pats: wearing green, parades, drinking and partying.
March is here, nows the time to stock up on Sprits and Green Dye.
Well it looks like I will not be able to attend my own event. I have to work on St. Pats and I do not like it. We have a huge project going on and I can't skip out on it for a game. Gasp! Sacrilege I know but I got to as our President would say, put food on my family.
As soon as I get in from work I’ll be joining in. I could change the times of the event, or everyone could party on until I can make it fashionably late to my own party. Have fun guys.
Saint Patties day is almost here
Like I said guys I have to work and will not be able to make it to some of the AM events, but this is a community event so party to your hearts content. A-net has come up with a luck weekend event so the Drunken Generals and Drunken Random Arena events sound like they are going to workout.
As soon as I am able to log in I'll join in the fun.
Don't forget to keep up with the events and how to play the games:

Had a discussion with Mog from the Mescon event on Guild Wars Unofficial’s forum today. They are having their annual event at The Henge of Denravi. Mog seems like a great person and to be friendly I will drop in and see what up for a little while, Mog has said the same.
It really sucks that I will not be able to attend some of the event time for my own event, but it is not my event it is everyone's event. For those who gave ideas I thank you for the input and I hope you will attend.
I am not calling off this event because of work. The show will go on.
This event is for those who do not have Prophecies and the Guild Wars community.
I believe the Event and games Ideas will be fun.
So to all of those who want to show, show I'll be there Friday night For the opening Event and I will be back Saturday evening after I have pried myself away from work.
RL what a bummer.
The Lucky Weekend is supposed to start today and the Party will start for those of us in America this evening and at Midnight for our GW brothers and sisters across the big pond tonight. Haven't herd much from anyone since the planning stages of the event.
Let’s hear the yeas and nays.

Thanks for cleanning up everything Avarre.
Just wanted to keep the news current, and keep the event info where everyone can find it.

From the Scribe:
A mysterious celebration from a far-off realm will influence our fine lands this weekend. Featuring iconic representations of strange quad-leafed plants, this holiday is unlike anything I have seen before. While I am uncertain what the holiday commemorates, it is clear the underlying themes are the color green and the zealous consumption of alcoholic beverages. Actually, many who celebrate this holiday in that distant land may not even know what they are celebrating, but that does not seem to stop them from having a good time!
Perhaps stranger than the foliage-tinged festival itself was the source of my information. A man no taller than a dwarf, with hair as orange as an Ascalonian sunset and clothing greener than the Maguuma jungle approached me and said to expect a "bit o' fun" this weekend. He told me there is a strange force of magic at work which may produce unusual outcomes this weekend, and if an adventurer slays the enemies of Tyria, Cantha, or Elona, there is a chance the victor will be rewarded with a mysterious item from that miniscule messenger's homeland.
When I asked about the nature of the items, my small friend merely winked and spoke of intoxicating pints of Shamrock Ale and unusual objects called "Four-Leaf Clovers," which he proclaimed would offer great benefits to an adventuring party, and perhaps even give those who use one an extra bit o' luck! In all honesty, I am not altogether certain the little man hadn't had a few pints already.
And with that, the tiny traveler vanished, leaving me with etchings of the strange items he had mentioned. I have added these images within this scroll, so you may all decide for yourselves the veracity of his statements. Perhaps you might even be lucky enough to find some at this week's end.

Double Gladiator Rewards
In addition to the portents of a strange, foreign holiday mentioned in my previous note, the Priests of Balthazar have temporarily increased the rewards for gladiatorial combat!
The Priests have doubled faction rewards for victory in the Arenas and for each individual kill. They have also doubled the amount of Gladiator Points earned for ten consecutive victories, which should make those elusive and desirable titles that much easier to obtain.
Whether you seek to gain Balthazar's faction, work towards your title of Gladiator, or simply seek the thrill of victory—make sure to visit the Battle Isles this weekend!

Honestly, all this Political Correctness crap has to END. Oh, boo-hoo, someone might be Muslim or something and get offended by the use of alcohol. Big freaking deal.
I, for one, will be there. Drunk, of course!
