If I indulge this for a minute, which is more than long enough to expose the wrong of it, I'll say the following...

He *might* mean that:
"Guild Wars, unlike Second Life, is not designed to emulate real life."

To which I will reply:
"Neither is Lineage 2 designed as a game that emulates real life, yet it includes marriage for the sole purpose of fun and RP because it is an Online RPG, just like Guild Wars."

Therefore:
It has obvious purpose being in a game like GW.
It can not be rightly said to be out of place in GW.

Now that I've pointed at the dangling nethers of sir.obvious, can we move on from the "has no place in GW" line of incorrect thought?

I'm sorry but what on earth are you babbling on about? I simply said he might be refering to the game Second Life then commented on how I would rather have ArenaNet spend time on gameplay than features like this. If all your gonna do is rant and flame people without actually reading there posts then I suggust this thread be locked asap.

Well, considering that Guild Wars is labeled an MMO, and not an MMORPG, I think that marriage within the game would be a bit more than just a stretch.

To explain my point:

Guild Wars is about two things: storyline, and PvP. The eventual goal of the storyline is to prep you for PvP - at least, this is the impression I have always recieved.

Now, there is a third point that is very obvious and doesn't need mentioning, but because I want all of my bases to be covered, it's: to have fun. The idea of marriage within a game is a fun one, granted, but I can just think of where it would head from the get-go.

Your idea of having some special content for married couples is nice, but ultimately unsatisfying; I would hazard a guess that after a very short period of time everyone would be married to someone else just to have access to the special items you recieve - it would be more incentive than just plain fun, and when you give the greedy (lots of those roaming around) incentive that can in any way be construed as monetary, you know the flocks will come a' running.

There is an easy solution to this problem, which is to customize items acquired by the married couple to the married couple alone upon acquisition, but eh, is it really that great? Is it really that special?

Marriage was fun in a game like, say, Morrowind. But, in a game like Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, etc. it just doesn't fit. Not as an official patch to the game. Getting married for role-playing purposes seems more suited to role-playing games, which Guild Wars is certainly not.

That said, it's always fun to get together in a guild hall and have a blast with friends. I would imagine that if you wanted to be married to another character within the game you could simply gather together a group of friends, lots of novelty items, some in-game alcohol for a reception afterwords, and all go nuts and dance once the she-bang was through.

But as far as official content goes, I think it'd be more of a waste than anything, as nice an idea as it may be.

Would your plan also include an "island" for quickie divorces? I have an idea a GW divorce court lol that can be watched in OM.

Seriously tho, I'm already married and happy in real life. I play GW because it doesn't have all that icky, feminine, real-life stuff.

I'm married IRL. My wife plays as well. Pretty sure the only person she'd let me marry in game would be her character. No reason to marry her character, I'm already married to her.

If I were to marry someone else in game, well it would probably lead to real life domestic trouble - not worth it.

Unless I could marry Cynn, then go on a honeymoon and finally get to see that thong!

I think it is completely irrelevant to the whole game.
Make war, not love.

Correction: GW is MMORPG; consider CORPGs to be a subset of MMORPGs. ANet felt that GW didn't fit the broader aspects of MMORPG so they coined GW as CORPG to further define the genre.

Looks to me like you're confused.

Okay, so the fight started anyway. Let me restate some points from my post.
1)Its got harmless amusement factor
2)this game has orpg in the title. I find this doubly amusing because someone who shall remain nameless said this is a corpg/mmorpg 'not a role playing game'. Last I checked, the orpg in both those means"online role playing game".

Yes, GW is not the stand online game which follows the curve on everything. But if players want something, Anet tends to put their own unique spin into the mix before giving it to us(if they decide to give it). So standard rpg elements like life skills(which I know some people want) might not make it in here in the usual form (if at all, doesn't seem to fit the game well) while other factors like online character marriage might take on a unique form(such as a title which doesn't count towards KOABD, pure entertainment factor).

So please don't bash an idea because this game isn't a standard rpg. If its amusing, harmless, and doesn't detract from gameplay for those that don't have it: I say put it on the list of things to add.

But that's just my 2 cents

*please note I did not say to add it on the list above more important things like skill balances, the next chapter, etc. K?

lol just think of all the mini-pet replicas of you and your spouse running around.

And to the comment about political correctness and 2008, it depends where you live, it was 2005 here when same sex marriages passed I believe... which might bring in other issues. Sell that to China.

TBH I really don't care one way or another.

I find this request amusing, but harmless overall. No one would be forcing you to marry, it would be optional.

Some questions though for OP.

1. How do you think ANet should handle the marriage - by character or by account? I have 8 characters, if one of them were to marry, would all of them be considered married to all of the other accounts characters. If they had more or less than 8, how would it work?

2. How would missing spouse be handled? Characters disappear for various reasons - inactivity, banned or stolen account, deletion.

3. What exactly would be the point of these marriages? You can't expect ANet to keep adding "married couples only" content so it would be a one-time event with no follow-up.

Also, I don't think there are that many players who would be interested. ANet announced 3m units sold - and believe me that was mostly to males. Who then created female characters so they could dress them in sexy clothes and fantasize. (Not knocking males, the smaller percentage of women players create male characters for the same reasons.)

Some people in this thread really need to get of there high horse, why waste time creating weddings and such in game when ArenaNet could be putting the same time and effort in to making gameplay or adding new content that benefits everyone to the game. Hell why stop with marriages? Lets have births and children, religion, oh how about we add makeup and jewelry, lets add bars and nightclubs for evens out, don't like warping? lets add mounts and ride everywhere... the list can go on and on. You know what ArenaNet why don't you just cancel chapter 4 and release the Guild Wars Sims addon pack, afterall who wants more skills, missions and quests?

Quote:

That really is a petty comment to make and from what I'm reading I getting the same vibe from most the people in favour of this, its not a question of wether it would be fun, meanful or an insight to the type of person you are its about the fact that Guild Wars is a GAME. I'm sorry for not asking for weddings ingame but I care about gameplay and I would have ArenaNet focussing on that then anything else, don't like it? Well tough because thats my opinion and no matter how you twist it into calling me a flamer and bashing the idea it comes down to one simple thing... gameplay before all else!
