I'm new to the Ranger class, just got Nightfall a few days ago, and wow are those heroes an upgrade from those blundering henchmen.
Anyway, I'd really like to build a trapping Ranger, I have a lvl 17 R/E and just finally now got barbed trap. The build idea was basically once I got the skills, lay down spiked, then barbed just behind it, and maybe a flame trap or draw the mob, then drop a healing spring to help my heroes.
So far, it's not going so good. First of all, I can't see the trap, so I'm kind of guessing when I'm trying to lead monsters into it. Number two, it doesn't seem that they're getting triggered...is a trap negated if you or someone from your party runs into the trap before the monsters? Finally, just getting the bad guys to fall for it is a pain. A lot of times the enemies have ranged attacks or are spellcasters, and as such halt outside the trap's triggering area. What I have been trying to do, is to lay the traps, back up, order my hero forward to draw the enemy in, then order the hero back towards me. Not working too well, because usually he gets about halfway to me, then turns around like an idiot and runs right into the mob.
I was hoping you could solo with a few heroes and trap in PvE, but some of the stuff I am reading seems to indicate that trapping is pretty much a group effort (meaning u need real people, not AI controlled party members) to coordinate, and is only useful in certain areas.
Anyone else ever try this, or should I just scrap the trapping build idea and be a barrage monkey like everyone else?
Using heros to trap?

errr...why the sam hell was this thread moved out of the ranger forum? is it not plainly clear this is a ranger PvE question?

Currently I am doing duo trapping runs with my Heroes in DoA and UW. Its easy, but it takes a few tries to get it right. My tip to anyone trying it is; sort of do it in a sequence. What I mean by this is, when you use slot 1, click hero's slot 1, when you use slot 2, click hero's slot 2.
Make sure you use the actualy Hero's pointer to get them set, if you use the group move icon, they move about funny.
Try planting a spirit in front of the traps. This spirit could be used to judge where your traps are placed. If you dont have a slot for a spirit, drop a coin down and this will let you know just as well.
After a while, you will pick it up, and its pretty fun.
As for traps, they dont disappear if you run away from them.

As for traps, they dont disappear if you run away from them. maybe what Im having most trouble with is telling whether the traps are working/doing what they're supposed to do.
Just to clarify, I dont plan on laying 200 traps so the mob instantly is just decimated, just a couple to make em bleed/cripple/do some damage. I use a bow and have a W and N hero to help dish out damage. but once the fighting starts there are spells flying around, enchantments, hexes, conditions, and u really have no way of telling what did what to who.
Is there a trick to luring these things into your traps? I have tried commanding my warrior hero forward and then draw him back, but he runs a few steps towards me, then turns right back into the mob. Maybe tonight I will just experiment in a game and try to see how my heroes react to different things. it seems like once they get attacked, whatever setting u have for them or whatever is irrelevant, they just start using their skills and attacking.
what I have already learned about trapping tho is it STINKS for those devourers that come up out of the ground - too late to do much by the time u see em hehe,

its easy to trap with heros.
in town disble the spirit that there carying. cuz if no they will use it as soon as they go in area. if its disbled they will use it only if u order them too. its best that youre the one carying QZ tho
flag em to a location where you want them to trap, force em to use the spirits and just make em use traps. in same time activate your own traps. but make sure you dont order them to use trap #2 before there done putting trap #1 etc
after traps are set, flag the heros to run waaaay far, so they dont even thinkn of runing in.
pull the mob and enjoy the drops

i should have clarified, i dont have a trapping hero, i am doing the trapping and i am trying to use the hero to lure them. bad idea, obviously LOL.
I think im starting to figure it out...but there is something thats making me nuts...it seems some traps stay visible, others do not. for example, i use barbed trap, theres this little graphic that happens, then nothing. i do the same with flame trap and i can see it on the ground plain as day. is this some sort of bug, or is it just that some traps are visible to the trapper and some are not? i have no problem using flame trap but barbed trap, which of course is my fav, is really hard to use cuz i cant see it and im having to guess where to try and draw the monsters into.

Utaku
I think most traps are not visible.
Just trap the place where you put your spirit. (Quikening Zephyr, Energizing Wind), or drop any item from your bag before trapping.
This way you'll know exactly were your traps are set.
Trapping where you drop your spirit is best as when you lure mobs, they'll gather around the spirits to attack them and then trigger the traps.

Don't bother trapping if you're not in a trapping team, simple as that.

LOL well that simplified things. Maybe it was a dumb idea thinking it would be a good idea to use a couple of traps just to soften up the bad guys and then finish them off, but ya never know unless you try, so I went with it. Plus it's actually pretty fun when it works. Maybe I'll dump my necro hero for the ranger and put some traps on her too, but having all those minions is kind of nice.
Well, off to the next failed PvE character experiment I guess
