rare items... are they worth it?

with the introduction of heroes, gw has arguably become a single player game. it is still possible to pug but for the most part a competent player with a hench/hero team will be able to complete a mission quicker and more efficiently then pugging.
having said that, what purpose is there in having rare items when, for the majority of the time, no other real players will even get a chance to see them?
i enjoyed collecting rares for a period of time but then i realized that gw really isnt a game about rare item acquisition and i promptly sold the majority of my collection.
so what does everyone else think about rare items in gw? worth it or not worth it?

There isn't, just as it never was. Vanity is a strange thing.

The reason market is down is because of inscriptions.

Of course, you just have to love the wammos, which upon entering the instance proceed to spam:
"I'm wielding sundering this and that of fortitude".

Perhaps the funniest thing that ever happened was, when a warrior like that was showing off by dropping his weapons on the ground for everyone to admire. Of course, the real fun started, when someone else picked one of his preciousssesss up and wouldn't give it back.

Yeah, what a dork!

Regardless of the value of an item most people want eye candy since they are the ones that stare at their toons the most. That is assuming that such items are being used and not just horded.

I don't use cool skins to impress other people, I use them to look cool. to myself.

To each their own. I, personally, could care less about bragging rights and who's got the rarer weapon. If I like the Shield of the Lion skin, then I'm going to get a collector's or crafters shield. I couldn't care less what color the letters are on the shield, but I do care about how it looks, to me.

i understand the "i dont care what other people think" argument for the most part but ask yourselves this; would you go out and buy nice clothes, cars, etc in rl if no one else could see you with those items? feeling good about yourself because of your clothes, accessories, etc is a normal thing but would it make you feel as good if no one else could see them on you?
i wonder what would happen to the rare item market if gw let you wield/show your weapons in towns and outposts?

The only time I ever care what the public thinks of me is when I am working, or (before my wife and I got together) dating. How you look often has direct implications on your life, thus is actually functional IRL.

If I had enough money to blow on a Rolex, I'd still buy the budget brand because I don't care about Joe Nobody "ooh"-ing and "ahh"-ing over my watch. I'd still buy a nice-looking watch, for my own benefit, and still would even if there existed no one to admire it.

Again, to each their own.

A point about this is , is when people use a crappy gold shield just because its gold ......... pick yourself up a collector one and get the max benefits , it doesnt matter if it has lava in its mouth if its crap .

Many of us collect rare items that never see the light of day again. Two types of rare owners .. those that collect for personal reasons and the wannabes that want to show off. So in answer to your question ... they are worth it to those that collect.

I've never really cared about rares that much. I mainly use collector stuff that's been upgraded. The only one that I'd want maxed stats is a communing Bo staff for my rit, but the one I have now works fine. I think rares are worth it in that they have max stats on them, and nothing more.

I am sort of split on this...

I have some rare items that I may never use but hold onto just because there rare.

I have others that I grinded for because the skin looked really cool, but were practical and I use them.

But I've also used collector/crafter weapons, like my hod sword i still have, simply to get the mods needed for a build.

I have to say that I like both the idea of loggin on and picking one of my chars thinking its cool looking and that others may also think the same. If you could see weapons/offhands in town it would have little effect on the prices of these items, but would result in a lot more people comenting on them and making others ask what is it, where did you get it, will you sell it...

As for the writing being white/blue/purple/gold/green, its all the same to me. I may click on my weapons to show off mods or tell what it is to answer a question but I never toss them in the trade window or on the ground just to brag about some thing.

But I do have a freind that does this sort of thing from time to time....

Given the choice between identical weapons with different skins, i'll just pick the one i like the most. If it's a rare skin, then great. if it's not, then great. There are some weapons out there that are rare, but as far as I'm concernede, ugly as sin. And there are some common skins (Crenellated Sword, for example) that I simple love.

All personal preference.

I dont collect rares. I collect awesome looking skins. If the awesome looking skin is rare, I will do everything in my power to get it.

Take axes for example. The rarest by far is the Dwarven Axe. I still prefer my trusty purple req 12 Sephis Axe because it looks so damn awesome.

Take swords... Arguably one of the rarest skins at the moment is the colossal scimitar and the tattooed scimitar. And I want both. Not because they are rare, but because they are hot.

There is no 'need' for gold weapons, it's a vanity thing. Greens were introduced to give the more casual players a chance to have top-tier equipment to balance this.

After almost 20 months of play I myself have never owned, nor do I care to own a perfect gold weapon, I started out using collectors and when factions was released I started using crafters. Function is more important to me than ascetics, but that's just me.

Depends on:
- Price (and available money)
- Mods
- Skin

Let's say I want an Eternal Bow for my ranger.
I ask around and get 2 offered (both max damage)
1. 15^50, +30HP, Vamp. Price 50K (just example, don't know real price)
2. 14^50, +28HP. Price 10K.

I'd go for the second bow, because I think the extras on the first one are not worth the 40K.
On any other bow, I would probably not pay 10K at all for those stats, but I want the Eternal Bow skin.

When I have 2m gold available, I buy the first bow.
The 40K would not even hurt. And it's probably the better investment.

I care more about stats than skins...

but there's also something like -rare stats- or harder to get stats.

Look around and try to find a shield with req9str -2stance +30.
In PvE those aren't readily available from collectors or crafters. The only way to get thim is by getting the greens: bulwark and shelter or by finding a gold or a base gold which can be upgraded.

Personally i think rare items are awsome, especially if you want to try crazy builds... Althought i think most people are driven by the rarity of the skin of some items instead of their actuall use.
1)I consider rare items the ones that have very low req and max damage or near max damage, because you can allocate the extra attribute points to something else(sometimes vital).Collector items are crap because minimum req is 9.So yes a gold sephis axe req8 15^50 6-21 is a rare item.A gold oni blade req8 15^50 is too(my favorites so far)
2)Rare items dont have to be gold. I would prefer the blue or purple IDS req 7 15-22 13^50 from another 15-22 req 9 15^50.
3)Rare skin doesn't excuse the extreme prices we can see people selling junk. Rare skins are mostly connected to reselling for profit and only.
4)If you like a skin, you can have it at a low to medium price supposing you don't get yourselve's blinded by the color and only.

value is in the eye of the beholder.

I use collector and/or weaponsmith items but if another item drops with the same functionality, I'll replace it. I'm not going to go out of my way to spend money on things that will do the exact same thing. Pretty much the only thing that I've spent a lot of money on is my complete collection of Prophecies and Factions greens but that's just because I need something to collect to stay in a game.
