My bro just told me his account has been suspended for 24 hours due to inapropriate language.
Inapropriate language? the deal:
He recieve green writing (like from in a guild) in the chat window telling him not to spam the trade window. Simply put - he rudely asked who it was (thinking it was an unknown guild member or a guest that couldn't be seen). Instead of an answer he was told to mind his language and when he pointedly said he'll talk how he wants he was booted and suspended for 24 hours for inapropriate language - not for spaming the trade (which he says he wasn't doing, and I tend to believe him as I know how he sells his stuff).

Now I am not one to appreciate a huge amount of swearing but with the option within GW to turn swearing on an off this is not a problem. How can Anet think they have the right to randomly boot and suspend people for swearing at an administrator who won't anounce themselves? This is what we call tin-god syndrome. Booting people, for no real reason, to feel big and powerful. It is, simply, disgusting.

This is a bit beyond ridiculous. Has this happend to anyone else? I looked through the formums and saw a few suspended acounts but from things like inapropriate names etc.

His 5 paragraph email to Anet will probably get binned. I am curious as to whether anyone else has been bullied by tin-god admins

Your brother was probably one of the "gentlemen" swearing at Gaile Gray in lions arch tonight.

Had he read his EULA, he would realize his language was inappropriate. That you feel swearing isn't a problem is irrelevent, apparently someone felt his language was over the edge and reported him.

They have every right to boot/suspend people for violating the EULA, and I can guarantee you it was in no way random.

Painful 24 hours to be suspended, hopefully he will be back online in time to enjoy the rest of the Wintersday festivities.

I think Anet has the right to suspend an account for swearing at someone, Admin or not. He had a fair warning, and was given a 24 hour ban.. where is the wrong in that? i personally do not see one. The fact the filter is there does not excuse someone from being obscene and ruining the game for some.

The filter doesn't make it okay, the filter just makes it less painful for the general populace.

4. ACCOUNT

(j) In Guild Wars, characters have the privilege of sending server wide messages called 'Chat Messages.' With this privilege comes a high level of responsibility on the part of the user. Due to the fact that this communication channel has the ability to impact every player on the server, NC Interactive will not tolerate any inappropriate behavior of any sort in this chat channel. This includes but is not limited to: inappropriate language of any sort or any attempt to escape the profanity filter, inappropriate or vulgar content of any sort, repeated 'spamming,' or 'flooding' of the chat messages channel, or any other conduct determined to be inappropriate by NC Interactive Support, in its sole discretion. Any violation of this term or rules of conduct may, in the sole discretion of NC Interactive, lead to the temporary removal of the character’s ability to communicate, the account being suspended for a set period of time, or lead to permanent account closure.

(a) NC Interactive reserves the right to suspend or terminate this Agreement (including your Software license and your Account) immediately and without notice if you breach this Agreement or willfully infringe any third party intellectual property rights, or if we are unable to verify or authenticate any information you provide to us, or upon game play, chat or any player activity whatsoever which is, in our sole discretion, inappropriate and/or in violation of the spirit of Guild Wars as described in the Rules of Conduct.

Should NC Interactive decide to suspend or terminate this Agreement with a User under any circumstances, the User will lose access to your Account.

(b) You agree that if the Service or your Account is suspended, terminated or cancelled for any reason or length of time, you are not entitled to any reimbursement or refund of any fees or unused access time.
They are not playing tin-god.. They are doing their job and i'm happy to know they really do.
..Unlike other games i played where GM wouldn't care about anything else than showing off their max items of pwnage in town or giving gold to their friends.

If you're going to speak rudely to a server mod/admin, of course you'll get suspended for inappropriate language. Anyway, spamming is bad too, the inappropriate language was just the option chosen in the "e-mail generator" which I have no idea about seeing as I am just a player like you. :P

Good thing nobody at Arenanet seems to speak anything besides English. It can get really rough in some Eropean districts. And most Germans turn of the chatfilter anyway since at least one "swear" word has some real non vulgar meaning in german, yet looks the same. eg. fat in german is "dick". so it is very nice to talk about fat people in English districts, in german of course.

My guess would be around the same time the made the game....

Im not one for random abuse of one's power, but im also not for thinking you can say what you want when you want just because your playing a game online...

@Cantora:

One moment dude. Nobody can talk how he wants. There are rules in the game. And if your friend doesnt accept or viloate them, he must bear the consequences.

Swearing is not fine. The fact that there is a filter does not justify swearing, it just shows that Anet (or NCSoft, whoever made that decision) predicted there would be swearing anyway.

ran·dom
adj.
Having no specific pattern, purpose, or objective: random movements. See Synonyms at chance.

well there's no pattern in the banning that's true, it does have a purpose and objective though.
the purpose: removing someone that uses inappropriate language.
the objective: make the game that little bit more peaceful.

random you say... lol..

They *do* ban/suspend people for swearing.
Of course, its nothing automated, so you shoudln't be surprised to find the penalties occur quicker/more obviously the anet teams presence. After all, doing it in front of them is about as much proof as you can get.

A minor slip as far as swearing goes probably isn't going to get you in much trouble, but if you get into some heated swearing, someone takes a screenie, and sends it along with some info to Anet .. you *will* be punished.

Anet don't tolerate offensive/derogatory behaviour, theres no 'special' treatment going on here, he was caught being offensive, and was punished for it. That's all.
