FPS issues
Chilly Ress
I have these current specs
Intel Core Duo 2.66 GHz X6700
2 gb ram
nvidia geforce 7950 gtx (dual 7950 gt's)
I get ~45-55 fps. I have heard people with much lower spec's get well over 70. I have defragged, virus scan, everything...I know of. Anyone got ideas to up the fps?
I also get frequent blue screens. May have something to do with it?

Vsync? Only thing that comes to mind. Well very high res might have some effect on FPS, normally not to much with better cards though. Especially with your set-up. Other than that I would make sure you cards are working right, clock speed, heat etc. Possibly ask the manufacturer if that is all good.
Sorry I can't help ya much. =\
But I'm using a 7600GT (my 7800GTX died /cry) and I get around 40-50 in town and 60-70 in zones.

Also depends on your settings. If you set to lowest quality, I'm sure that will raise the FPS.

GeForce 7900GS 512MB PCI-e (500/1400)

My first thought was the same as Rakeris, do you have V-Sync turned on? Have you scanned for spyware/malware and viruses?
bizarresk
low power supply? overheating? newer drivers?
Josh
What resolution are you running at?
MrTickle
I only get 45-55 fps too. I have a 7900 GTO, 2G ram but I run at 1600 x 1200 on full eye candy mode.
I'll try turning vsync off

The Low FPS you are experiencing may be caused by the AA and AF beign on. They do cause a hit in framerates and are the possible culprit. On my gaming machine (Intel 3.4ghz 651 cpu, Intel d975 mobo, 2 gigs crucial ram, X1900XTX graphics card, 2 WD 74gig Raptors mirrored) I usualy get anywhere from 85-120 FPS without AA and AF turned on. When I turn them on my FPS drop to around 50-60. Try running the game with them turned off and see if there is a difference in your framerates. Even my Laptop (HP DV8351nr, with ATI Radeon Express 200m) gets no less than 45 FPS at all times. But I have to turn down almost all the graphics setttings to get that (and to stop the lag).

I have a 700watt psu and no overheating issues. aa=antialiasing?

Oh my god, 40fps in town sounds so sexy.

11FPS on average, overheating (plus automatic shutdown so I'm forced to take a break for 15 minutes) every ~3 hours...
Then again, I'm playing on a laptop so it has its' advantages..

If you are using nTune to adjust your AA & AF you get about half the normal fps. Try disabling the nTune adjustments and using the 4xAA in GW, this should bump you to 75+ fps (like it did for me.)

Oh, one more thing. I am currently playing on a Viewsonic 19" monitor (no widescreen).

But I feel your pain, 11 fps is terrible.

FSAA+AF will have nothing to do with the OP's problem at all. On the rig I posted above I run at max settings with 4xFSAA and 8xAF and I get back not less than 50fps anywhere in Nightfall, including the Sunspear Sanctuary. Anywhere else I'm in 100-200fps depending on what's happening on screen.
On the FSAA+AF thing, one thing that I can think about that would cause a problem is if GW is also using the driver's global settings. What you'll need to do is set GW to 'application controlled' from within the driver panel. This overrides the driver's global settings and allows GW to just use the settings from within it's own graphics menu.

What is AF first of all? Second, I heard something about a monitor's or computer's refresh rate? Can I change this? How do I change it if possible? How do I set GW to application controlled? Is the driver panel in device manager? Or somewhere else?
I am positive I do not have any viruses or spyware. I keep my computer safe, lets keep it at that.

I think Guild Wars was designed to favor ATi cards, thus Nvidia ones have lower performance. Nvidia drivers are also to blame.

AF: Anisotropic Filtering
If you are using the NVidia display utility, switch the view to classic and reload the utility. Then on the side panel, go to 'Performance & Quality Settings.' From there, click 'Add Profile' and point it the GW.exe in your explore window. Then on the bottom where you see it start with 'Global Driver Settings,' go to Advanced Settings on the drop down. Then click all options, and then tick the box that says 'Application controlled.' Make sure you do this with all options!!! Apply your new settings, click OK, and restart your computer. Then fire up GW and hopefully enjoy your enhanced framerates.

BTW, how do you turn on AF in GW? Force it using Nvidia utility?

Apply settings and restart computer makes the settings click in, if you did that there might be something funky on my end (which I wouldn't doubt seeing as people can read frames at 100+ O.o)

Now I have used the Nvidia panel to run GW at 16Q AA and the graphics look even better. My FPS dropped by about 5 or so. Still >30 FPS in town

Heres what I am running and my customs on the NVidia panel:
1.83Ghz C2D
1GB DDR2 800Mhz
eVGA 7900GT KO
19' Viewsonic 1440x900
Forced options:
8xS AA
16x AF
V-Sync: Off
FPS: 69 at attached location

If you have the "Enhance application settings" for AA instead of "Override application settings", try that instead. I think it makes the image better.
EDIT:
Sentao Nugra, I checked my FPS at the same location as your screenshot and i get about 108 FPS at 1680x1050 resolution.

i have read about these problems quite much, as i am having the same.
based on my experience; a soundcard could be part of the problem. My fps increased some when i bought a soundcard (and stopped using onboard sound) though, this didnt do much, and probably not a solution to your problem.
i have also noticed that Guildwars runs better after i have restarted the computer (epsecially if i have been using torrent-downloading software (azureus), plus whats more, it seems winamp (some say even firefox running in the background!) can really have an negative impact on Gw's performance.
try closing _every other application_, if you havent already

Ok, I got it. My monitor has a refresh rate of 60 MHz and thus topping out at 60 FPS. I disabled that in Guild Wars, didnt do anything. I forced it off on graphics control panel and FPS boosted up to 150. Thanks for all the help. Really enlightened me on how smart some of y'all are with computers.

Is what we are talking about in the same place (pic attached?)
If not, can you post what tab you are under where you found this option?

I think my nvidia control panel is a new one, yours appears to be the older version.
Sentao Nugra
I switched to the new view,, like yours, and went to the same spot. I don't even have that option... hmm.... time to figure out what is going on.
Rakeris
Strange, I just looked for kicks, and I have the option in both the new and the old control panel.
darksiege
Sentao Nugra, maybe you need a newer Forceware driver.
Rakeris, do you notice better graphics when using Enhanced instead of Override?

ok...I posted this in another topic, but it's worth getting more input.
Here's my setup
WinXP Pro
P4 3.2g
1 gb ram
120gb hd
BFG 7800GS OC Video Card
Audigy 2 sound card
My old card (bfg 5950fx OC) burned up and the comp is still under warranty, so they replaced it with the 7800. when I first installed it, I was getting 70-80 fps @ 1600x1200 with highest settings. Now, I only get 10-15. changing resolutions does nothing significant. the highest I get with the lowest settings is 20-25fps. Occasionally, I'll be playing and my frame rate will suddenly jump up to 70-80fps and stay there for the rest of the time i'm on.
some things to note:
-latest Forceware drivers, set to "app controlled" for the aa & af
-No spyware, checked daily.
-defrag at least once per week
-no other programs running, except teamspeak, occasionally.
-core temp on the video card is 35-45^C while playing, slowdown's set to 115, so no chance I'm hitting that.
-tried running without sound
-don't use EAX
any ideas?
