Guild Wars...?

Hi I was sitting here thinking about the game.... Some questions arose as to the name.... With the release of more expansions and as the story changes, what relevance does the name "Guild Wars" still have to the overall game besides the functionality of GvG PvP.... I do not understand how any of the game for any reason story wise would have brought about that name and i find it simply misleading now..

that's why it's called Guild Wars:

The Guild Wars lasted for over 50 years (from 1013 AE until 1070 AE), causing much suffering and hatred between the inhabitants of the kingdoms. These old wounds are still evident, most notably in King Adelbern's mistrust of Kryta's willingness to help Ascalon recover from the Charr invasion.

There have been many Guild Wars, but when characters in the game speak of the Guild War, they refer to the most recent war.
and you say it doesn't mean anything more, but think about Kurzicks and Luxons, they are kind of a guild, aren't they?

the same for the Kournans, Istan and Vabbian...

If you read all the the flavor text for the quests and such you would know that the "groups of people" are usually called a "Guild" story wise.

Example: the Brotherhood and the Am Fah of Kaineng Are....Gasp...RIVAL GUILDS that are in a constant war between each other until you complete the quest lines of Kaineng.

Nightfall has really no "Guilds" of its own (The Sunspears are more of an Order, or Milatary thing), but Story wise they are aided in their time of need by the Guilds from other continents.

i noticed all that and it makes sense.... just seemed a little weak to me... i love the name and am used to it now.... i just dont quite see how it was the best choice for the overall franchise...

i guess you can attribute it to something like Magic: The Gathering.... Read up on how that name came to be and you will laugh....

If you have the Original campaign (Profecies), during the very first cut scene even before you can start to actualy play the game, after you have created your character (dang that is a lot to think on), during the cut scene they tell of a war between guilds and how that the Pre-Searing is a time of unstable peace between guilds. And in the booklet that we get with Profecies it discusses at length the "Guild Wars". That is where the name of the game came from. Afte the Searing all of the guilds combat each other for control of not territory but for control of "Favor of The Gods", which is kinda flawed as anyone can get favor even if they do not belong to a guild.
In the book during the "GuilD Wars" each guild would fight each other for: territory, resources, gold, and other things that I truly forgot about. In the book it tells of how rival guilds would fight for control of Nolani Academy, the reeason is whomever controls where the fighters are taught will get them.
I do hope that this clears up a few things and doesn't confuse anyone.

Guild Wars was a fitting name for the first game. The reason why the second and third game are also called Guild Wars is that the people would recognise it better. Thats all, dont look too much behind it

like i said... i like the name... but it just seems weak... and i was hoping maybe there was something i missed that would bring it up a few notches in relevance.

Guildwars II would have definately killed it :P.

When the first Guild Wars came out, the "Prophecies" wasn't added on until Factions was released. Now people differenciate chapters based on the suffix of the name - and the meaning is in the suffix as well. GuildWars has just become a general term now.

But as for the meaning of Guild Wars, this might shed some light:

Guild Wars isn't just specific to Tyria.

Wrong. As said, "Guild Wars" refer to the period of conflict between guilds earlier in the Prophecies campaign.

Actually, it's obviously a ret-con. The "Guild Wars" event was probably just to give the name a PvE justification for the title of the game (since the PvP justification for the title is obvious)

The plot in all 3 campaigns of Guild Wars is filled with ret-cons and loose ends. Don't think about it too much.

Rewriting the background lore so that it makes sense with future literature. In this case, the mention of the "Guild Wars" is the information added (seriously, it's mentioned in the game, like, twice), and it was added to reference the title of the game.

I have everything in the game that I want now. i made myself a nice and quiet solo guild and go to war with my guild and pugs vs rotscale mostly and monsters accross the continents.
its...funnnnnnnn
I pride myself in not letting noob pugs die on missions and farm jobs cause I like to see people having fun not losing. I've noticed others doing the same.

Or perhaps Guild Wars: Reloaded, Guild Wars: Revolutions.

Lots of games these days have misleading names. Most of them are simply because the names were perfect at the time of their conception. Content changes, but the names of games (kinda like brand names) don't change much.

well maybe... hopefully we will have a chapter with a dream or story sequence where you go back in time during the major Guild Wars and actually do sometihng... Or better yet some sort of magic has caused you to get stuck in the past and you end up changing something that is super important....

the last idea is semi joking but i coul see it done and done good possibly....
