Will Guild Wars be around for 5+ years?

The question is this: Will Guild Wars/Arena Net still be around in 2012 & beyond or will it make a new game or just die out?

I'd say it's unlikely. There aren't many innovative ways which the game can improve (feel free to prove me wrong). That's when the future looks brim for an MMORPG. ArenaNet can't put out lasting content quickly enough.
Unless ArenaNet can successfully revamp PvP, I don't think Guild Wars will last past Chapter 4. If the latest enhancement turn out to be a bust, many dedicated players may end up leaving GW. (for WoW, incidentally, which promises an organized play arena.)
For PvE, how long will you really play a game when it can be beaten in a week? (in the case of Factions and Nightfall)

$hade.
As Zing said Anet is showing a lack of creativity and if they don't start adding new elements to the game and stuff rather than just new chapters and profs and not giving it a little "Pizzaz" then they're going to fall out of the game race quickly
Wretchman Drake
They really need to add new features and interface to the game but still mantain it's gameplay style. Factions did that with the new arenas and skills, etc. but Nightfall didn't really do anything. It added Heroes but nothing good for PvP.
Guild Wars is a competative game for player-vs-player gameplay, and that's what they need to focus on.

Nightfall introduced very strong skills into the PvP metagame which damaged, in my opinion, the PvP meta. As this is a PvP orientated game, Anet needs to be very careful what elements/skills they introduce come chapter 4. I personally believe that if Anet does a good job in modifying PvP in chapter 4 many players will return/start playing more GW.
Saying that, PvE is still rather popular (at least farming is) so that needs to be taken into account.
But lets hope!!!

When i think of GW i think of a 5 year life, however this of course can be extended or shortend by actions from Anet.

If you are making 5-year video game plans, it's over for you anyway.

wait wait, i dont mean ill waste 5 years on GW lol.
I mean i expect GW to live 5 years.

You all seem to think that PvE pales into insignificance compared to PvP...
This is a pvp minded game, but pve has a larger player base from what I have seen. Nightfall made big changes to pve but not pvp, this is because nightfall is a pve focused chapter. Factions was a PvP focused chapter. I think guild wars has a good chance of lasting for 5 years, I know I will be playing it for quite a while longer.

There's so much more to Guild Wars than 'Beating the Game'. If that's all your interested in you might as well buy Neverwinter Nights, or even something that's totally offline.
Guild Wars offers so much to do, I can't understand how people can say Anet need to add new features and interface to keep the game interesting... every chapter new stuff is added, let alone the changes that are made betwen chapters (Sorrows Furnace, Observer Mode, Material storage, skill updates, Domain of Anguish etc). Beaten the game? Fine. Beaten Domain of Anguish? Completed every quest? Got your favourite armour? Got that title you wanted? Been to all the treasure spots? Unlocked all skills? Tried all the PvP arenas (and got top Rank if you enjoyed it?)? Explored all the areas?
Yeah you done all that? With ALL your characters?

I agree. There is so much more to this game then just beating the story. There is even more then just PvP. And to say Nightfall did nothing for PvP is an insult to the hero system and the coming hero tornament.
My predeiction is that anet will make a total of 6 chapters of guild wars. After that, who knows, they may make GW2 or they may move on to a diffrent project.
But one thing is for sure, the servers will be kept running for several years after new chapters are no longer being released.
On a side note: the Mian calander ends on exactly Dec 21, 2012. The same day as the winter sulstice, the day our sun will meet the galactic equater, and the same day our planet will complete its "orbital swivell" around the sun. Its also the day after my 31st birthday....the day i turn 31 will be the last full day on earth.

Sure would be wierd if EVERYONE moved on to other things and it left me being the only person in ALL of Guild Wars after 5+ years. I guess it would be sort of lonely, but then again....yelling at heroes for being idiots can sure pass for some amusement. Yep...I can see it now. Going to LA d1 or KC and talk in local chat and get the "No one hears you message", owning Cavalon with 1 faction, never being able to reach Rank 12 because there will be no one to fight. It sure would be wierd.
Anyways, I think with any MMO-type game, GW will have its peak and sort of fade off due to new games coming out. Whether that will be in 5 years or not, I don't know. I sure hope not. There is plenty to do and GW . I think ANet is to a degree....holding back a bit. I like to think of it like at the end of the "Karate Kid" movie when Daniel is about to give Johnny a swift kick to the face via the Crane Technique. Daniel waits and waits and waits and BAM!!! I'm hoping it will be like that for Guild Wars. GW has a lot of potential and hopefully ANet realizes it as much as the GW players do and I think everyone is waiting for the best to still come. This is one reason why I think a lot of people will stay around even if it is after 5 years. On another note, the game is just plain fun and addictive. People still play D2 and that has been out for a billion years (I think it was created before fire was discovered). People will continue to play the game as long as its fun and their are new things to do. That is just my 1 plat on the subject.

I'd like for GW to be around for more than five years. Thing is, if they make a new chapter every year, that's a lotta chapters. Meaning more data stored on our computers and more for us to keep track of. I'm sure there's a limit to how many chapters we can be expected to have in one account.

GW going to die in 5 years fast :/
It easy i cant tell you how much people quitted GW and dint even hitted lv.20 lol, they said it sux and allLol try to figure that at least like 100 people from my MSN list stopped when they beated the game or else :/
That the problem whit GW,that a lot of MMO's dont have,in most MMO's you do PvE to rox at PvP,we lvl up lvl up till we get a decent level(lv.60 for most game) and then have tons of fun PvPing whit new patches and all!Now whit that 60 lvls to do,you dont get bored! Not saying that farming is better but in some MMO's that have the 60 lvls system have a nice PvE still(nice quest and all)
I'l say to something i miss from other MMO's,reputation...yea that right if you were a really good Pker people will fear you, like omg *InsertName* comming runnnn! That was cool! And GW you'r guild won GvG OR HoH,well just another guild of the millions that won a GvG/HoH big deal :/
My 2 cents

It is a possiblility though that it still would be around in 5+ years. Think of Everquest. Thats a decently old MMORPG.

everyone on this forum seems to think anet is screwing up and the game is going bad.... numbers are good with each new chapter.... this game is a huge success and each chapter is also... so get over the fact that they didnt add something targetd for your game demo or fix a problem you feel affected by in chapter 3, just have faith that chapter 4 is a new ball game... and 5 and 6 7 8 9 10.....
This same stuff happened with Magic back in the day people were all this game wont last long they cant do anything new itll just be old cards over and over with new names.... the game is still very much alive and very new things are done every set.... if you ask me this game is on a path to being around 10+ years minimum...IF
They do graphic upgrades mixed into the current per 6 month cycles...
They eventually make it cheaper to own...
I know they gotta make money but if I like a game I would like to own all the expansions.... It's gonna be 200 dollars soon to do that... And I buy CE...
New gamers to GW get alot though... You complaine about the content being to short... It's not to short they have another game near to being out.. Don;t get greedy there is SOOO much in the game right now....

Nobody really know, neither them. The thing that they must have in mind is that they have to innovate such as any company out there really.

I expect GW to be around for a while. I hope they revamp the game completely in a GW2 or something like that where you truly have to start over with nothing. No import of existing characters, no import of money, but truly start over. I think a lot of the fun of the first GW is that everyone started with a blank slate and it was a lot tougher to progress, but you still felt like you were getting somewhere all the time. This would also level the playing field in a lot of ways.
Nightfall was fairly easy to blow through with Heros and all the resources of your account even with a new character.

it will probably still be around...look at diablo II, thats still going good. the problem with guild wars though is that sections of the game are already dead. go to henge of denravi and there will be 1 or 2 people. try and find groups in factions camaign and its dead there as well. a-net should make more updates to ALL campaigns....new AB maps would be especially appreciated =/

I love factions, it would be a shame to see it fall down the drain. As for the Henge of Denravi thing, I think most people just play Proph. to get to Lions Arch then port to Nightfall or Factions, which is a shame

Since pvp is absolutely pointless to me, focus on PvE, I'm having fun with the game, keep at the same pace, and ill keep buying.

Bad comparison time! Guild Wars is like the PS3, it's new and refreshing but does the same thing it can do from the previous version (PS2 and PS3, all 3 chapters of Guild Wars). It does included alot of features and the graphic looked nice but us (players) wants more innovated stuffs and ideas to keep us from leaving the game.

For example when I was young I was into a certain book series... from the beginning of it... So every month I would buy the next one from the scholastic catalogue... Well for a 11 year old to look at a stack of 50+ books and say damn i read all that.... kinda crazy...
When chapter 10 comes out and you sit back and think that you completed all those hours of story.... what game will have that? none... the older Guild Wars gets the more mature it will be and the better it will be as the developers see what works and what doesn't and get better at making new content.... there is no reason for this game to EVER end.... I am not be unrealistic... I am saying the market for games grows all the time and this game grows with it... New players have a huge amount of content right away...
They can afford the loss of your playing... frees up the servers for new players... But by all means get past your crazy ideas and keep playing so us older players can have a good time with real people and not AI...

The Mayan calendar quip was priceless, good laugh.
As far as GW being around for five years, I would say yes, but the specific regions are going to be hit increasingly hard with the 'lack of player interest in area' bat more and more. As stated about the Henge(which has 'almost' always been dead, perhaps a bad example), and other outposts that are out of the way being deserted is true now in NF, last night in one of the mission outposts, I was the only blue dot on the screeen for, what seemed like 5-10 mins, then someone else finally mapped in(and no I wasnt in district 2 or 3, dis 1), I cant recall the mission now, its like 5-6 from the end(the Master of Whispers) story track, stupidly easy quest, masters first try.
Whether or not its around they are going to have to start getting a little more creative on the mission, and PvE side of things, I expect as I get closer to the end, it should get harder, it did in proph, I mean I know Im a much better player know, but they should expect that, to a degree. I realise its a tuff balance between hard and easy, with all the differing levels of player skill but a mission at this later stage of the game, that does not even tax my team, is a bit of a dissapointment.
Besides that the PvP communtiy, judging from the forums I've visited, seems increasingly disenchanted with the state of the PvP, so I think Anet might have a bit of patching up to do in this area, and a little more thought into tuff missions, not just 6 hour epic missions, available end game.
An rather than just complain,I think that the way missions are working now, with masters, expert, etc, is a step in the right direction, but another way, sorta the same, is to have more scalabe content where the player can pick what track they are pursuing, and if its masters then it had better be hard. There are some 'quests' where they let you know ther difficulty beforehand and if its a Masters you can choose not to do it. What Im suggesting is very much along the same lines, but perhaps the choice beforehand to fight a more challenging mission attached to the main story line.
Something to think about.

Sure, it will be there. And many other new 'refreshing games' where people in forums will bitch: "man, if u dun like powergaming, go play GW!"....
eloc_jcg
Ya, I noticed that in Henge of Denravi is it quite empty for a Capital City of Tyria. I also think that they should make a new Luxon vs Kurzick map where you get Faction per kill and it is a small arena where the match never ends and you basically have unlimited team numbers (+12 per team). At the beggining of Guild Wars it showed true skill to be at level 20 but now it is kinda like "If you aren't level 20 you are a noob!", know what I mean? I am wondering this question because I am considering a future career in Video Game Development and Arena Net seems like a nice place to get a job at.

Diablo stood because it has 3 things GW don't have and claim is the best features of its game play: Grinding, Farming, and Leveling.
Releasing a new chapters every 6 months doesn't appeal to me.
~Prophecies took too long and was boring. I only came back because of Factions (it looked good). The storyline was stupid and the Visier was obviously the Lich.
~Factions was too fast overall, but too slow in the middle. Shiro's reason for killing the Emperor was not known until NF, so at that time it seems like "he just felt like it and had to save himself".
~NF has too much grinding for ranks to get through the game. Storyline was COMPLETELY crap. Killing Abaddon (and attributing him for all evils in previous chapters) was stupid.
There's nothing to look for after you hit 20 and get the best gear + armor (which is easily attainable, which means no one is better in terms of gear). Yes that sounds like a balance thing, but most people don't play PvP.
PvP took some great hits recently (HA, Untested IMBALANCED SKILLS IN NF that was recently nerfed TOO MUCH, New classes that are too complicated for all new players and serve no purpose, and the altered "all new useful" skills, think Shadow Meld {E}, and the fact that some skills were just clones of old skills with a pointless twist).
GW won't last beyond Chap 4 (comes out already... 6 months? 1 year? pfft good games take 2+ years). Factions and NF won 2006 because no good MMos came out, but 2007 is a new game - WoW TBC is coming, and it is coming in less than 4 days.

As many said above GW is a great game but yet there is always the natural choise: Evolution OR Exctinction.
I think the pve section is quite good(i would like to see more areas that only human parties are allowed) and more temporarly unlocked areas that guilds or alliances can maintain if doing something(so far only city controll in factions).Yet i think the lvl 20 grind is great and so far there is total balance with the skills involved, while no clue on pvp because most times i try to play lag killing me so didn't explore it as much as i wanted so far(Personal opinion)
The real question here is: Would you like to see GW to be the top game in the next few years while monthly or yearly fees are introduced , or you just want a farm/pvp game that many can play without paying what most other games require. Evolution needs the best and as experience proves the best are well rewarded.

I'm sure Guild Wars will be around for another 5 years. Of course many things will have changed by then. By 2012, Anet will have opted to run their latest version of Guild Wars using the Unreal 6 engine. There will be 20 classes to choose from (but of course some things will never change, so no there will still be no way to link multiple accounts). Across your many travels in various campaigns, you will have found Gwen's Hat, Gwen's Shirt, Gwen's Pants, Gwen's Breaches, Gwen's Toy Bunny, Gwen's Highschool Yearbook, Gwen's Miss Universe Crown, Gwen's Scandelous Paparatzzi Drunken Party Photos, Gwen's Autobiography, Gwen's Obituary, and finally Gwen's Coffin where you can finally nail a broken flute through her heart to make god damn sure she's dead. The game weapons of choice will include a holy hand grenade and a crossbow with a chainsaw mounted under the breach.
eloc_jcg
LMAO. Flute through the heart...
I would hate to see monthly fees introduced. I doubt it would make it any better except making less people play it.

unspokenglory
you all want new innovative stuff enviroments graphics set ups etc.. but you got to think guild wars is setup and based for the casual player and secondly they want the maximum ammount of players to be able to play so if they just up and decide to go all out with all the new grapics like the direct x 10 ... which is only suported on windows vista at the mean time .. thats gonna cut out about 80% of all the guildwars players leaving guild wars epmpty due to the lack of people who canT afford the upgrades and or a new computer .. you all want soo much soo fast but fail to realize that a-net is tring to move along with technology at a medium pace so that the players of the game can slowly upgrade and or can aford the new graphics card and or computer so that they dont loose there clientle (you guild wars players) so instead of being inpatient .. i can almost garentee that almost none of you have fully beat the game ( i eam all the side quest, getting all the skill's elites in every chapter on every character you have , and then venturing into pvp and doing your best there) intill you have done all that i can see why you would be bored with the game ... but a crap laod of you havent so stop whining about theres nothing more to do when there is ... play with what you got band beat it before you ask for more !!!! YOU SPOILD BRATS !!
eloc_jcg
Ok, I think Guild Wars looks way better compared to Anarchy Online. Its has also been on for about years now. I joined 16 months ago when it was relatively quite new & getting to level 20 meant something...will they ever make one with a slow level curve like Prophecies? We may never know...XD
