From the support website:

"If you are using a router, please open and/or forward both TCP port 6112 and TCP port 80 within their settings."

Can someone please talk me through how to do this? I need as simple an explanation as possible as I am a dummy when it comes to things like this...

I don't have a router myself, but you should go into the router settings, find the option of opening or forwarding ports, and ad TCP 6112 and TCP 80 to the list. The way this is done depends where the company that produced the router hid the settings, how did they name them and so on. Writing your Router model might help, since someone reading this might have it and explain step by step.

You can always resort to asking someone in your neighbourhood to do this for you, or search the instruction booklet or the manufacturer website...

My router is Netgear WGR614 v6.

I've clicked on port forwarding and from there tried to enter port 80 and port 6112 in the "starting port" and "ending port" respectively, but nothing happens.

Initially I also tried to set port triggering to disabled, which helped with my connection problems at first. But after having shut down the computer, restarted it and logged into GW, I was suddenly kicked off again with an error 58 and now I can't reconnect.

Like I said, I'm pretty much clueless about the inner workings of my computer and router, so I could really use some help to fix this...
