Mysterious "portal"

Recently I was exploring the Arid sea, and came upon a portal. It was similar in appearance to the deserts' teleporters. However there was one of them lizard/snake lookin' fellas and he told me I could not survive so would not let me pass into the portal. Does anyone know how to gain access? I'm ascended, done every mission / and tons of quests... I don't see why I would not be able to enter. The portal is at the very bottom of the Arid Sea, sort of in the middle. Any thoughts? Maybe a quest which needs to be active?

The portal leads to Elona. So if you don't have nightfall you won't be able to use the portal. If you do, then you have to have tamed the desert wurms first.

Yes that portal leads to Elona, the Cyrstal Overlook to be more specific. It is advised to have afull team with you if you plan on going into that protal because the enemies are no pushover.

You may need to have made certain progress in Nightfall to be able to get there. This is because of Sulphurous Haze which doesn't look at level, AL, or life, it just kills you after a couple seconds.
