I am a long time veteran of GW (Apr 2005) who has come to the realization that even after all ArenaNet has introduced to the GW world (or because of it) something is missing from the game. Something which brings me and my intrepid Ranger (the legendary Ras Mortis) back for more. Don't get me wrong, I thought I'd be the last guy to look for greener pastures. But here it is, I've done it all (except GvG and beating DoA), maxed a ton of titles and yet I need more of something I can't quite completely put my finger on.
GW is hands down the best darn Co-Op ORPG in the world, but I guess I was just an MMORPG guy deep down. Check this out....
I downloaded the EQ2 7 day free trial (because there was no way in the Realm of Torment I was going to play WoW) with a ton of skepticism, and after playing for a day or two, it opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities. I enjoyed the non-instanced combat areas (real players in the wild...cool), the whole crafting deal, the slightly more complex UI/learning curve, multiple playable races, furnishable houses, mounts, and the feeling of potential....you know, the world is wider.
Still, GW definitely spanks EQ2 graphics-wise, story/mythos-wise and skill mechanism-wise. PLUS, there is that long load time between zones, and the annoying monthly fee. In the end, I found myself constantly comparing it to GW....like how one would treat every woman they meet after a break up with a long-time girlfriend.
I find EQ2 is not quite the game for me, but it was very close. Still, something even more dangerous occured after that trial....I now want to give World of RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO-craft a try *cringe*. I know, I know....
WHAT CAN ARENA-NET DO TO PREVENT THIS TRAGEDY???
Well, I'm not quite sure. What is great for one GW fan is not great for the other 2 million GW fans. HOWEVER, here is a list just for starters:
1. Bring the PvE community and comraderie we felt in the days of Prophecies back together...you figure it out, Arena Net, that's why you get paid the big bucks. PUGs are down, entire zones are dead, hell...even chest runs aren't even viable. Maybe if you allow Guilds to advertise in game their philosopy, styles, needs better than we all could find some great people to play with...much like EQ2's model... I click a tab, and I get to view all active guilds on my time.
2. Introduce truly UNIQUE non-customizable Weapons and Armor...only allow 5 or so copies in game period. Make the total in game UNIQUE items cap at maybe 1000 per chapter. These items would be PvE only, but very powerful. Having that rare player with these items in the group would make DoA manageable. And just think about the real fame those characters would have? Announce the intro date of the items months in advance so everyone has a shot and allow them to drop anywhere, but at an extremely low rate. Each chapter you add more unique items.
OR....Introduce crafting at the player level and make it count, however, who am I kidding? The game mechanics make this impossible now. BUT, here is really the Holy Grail...how cool would it be if players could effect the game world? What if you could master-craft unique items, forever stamped with your character's name...every time another character uses it in battle, the crafter gains a small amount of experience and/or gold.
3. How about this, allow players to change the game world via conquest? Maybe allow heroic groups to reclaim a part of Tyria over time, based on a number of victories. The Alliance thing was a step in the right direction, because it brings a small measure of fame on a alliance/guild level. Stiill, we need something that elevates goals...makes PvE people aspire for real fame in a sense.
4. Introduce a Merchant's town or Auction house per chapter where all folks looking to Buy and Sell go there. Eliminate Trading in all other outposts.
5. Introduce armor storage...better yet, why not allow storage upgrades at cost? The festive hat makers...again, a step in the right direction. How about
Green Item storage? Perhaps along with every skill cap, I want to achieve the title of green item capping god. Whatever...something along those lines. Make title achievements more noticable in outposts...the whole idea was for vanity, I say pump it up. The last time I went "wow" was when I saw a Master Treasure Hunter...pretty rare IMO.
6. NEW playable races...why not centaur, dwarf and Charr???
7. What about Pet stables (allowing multiple pet choices)??
Hey, you get the idea.
HELP ArenaNet! I don't want to turn TRAITOR....
Ras Mortis
Chewbacca Defense
Yes, that's nice and all, but to prevent this tragedy, ANet would have to charge monthly fees. Not sure how many folks would like to shell out that kind of cash.
