Why do you reinstall? That just means you have to download the new content again, and that only causes more err 58's. the new content is streamed, meaning while you play it is downloaded, except for the major parts, which occur once you start the game. And if you so happen to enter a new area, well then it has to download the content for it there and then. And if you just wait when you log in, you shouldnt experience any undue err.58s

just use the -image before you go to bed one night. it will download all the updates at once, so you wont have to stream it while playing.

Just do a -image every so often..geez.

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image

A little familiarization with the game you play will make you feel less desperate and stressed.

There is also a procedure to freshly update the DAT from an already downloaded DAT file, that procedure is described here.

There are actually very few reasons to have to reinstall the game: data archives can be repaired and refreshed, additionally most error's like 58's are a result of connectivity issues/router settings/recent portal bugs etc.

Doing unnecessary lengthy updates as a result of unnecessary game reinstalls when you are already prone to error 58's is like kicking yourself in the crotch and then complaining that it hurts.

you guys don't understand. i have the same problem that he has. everytime gw updates with a new build, i can't connect to the server. i dont know what it is that they do but its fooked up. after i reinstall it lets me connect so i know its not routing/firewall issues. plus the game worked fine till the update. and i didn't change anything. unless guildwars has spyware on it and my spybot deleted something that it needed. anyways nobody wants to -image everytime there's an update. its just a lot of fooking installing and downloading. if they dont fix this stupidness i guess i ll have to go play something else.

I've had this happened to me 2-3 times, every other time it's worked perfect.

One time was around a preview weekend (factions preview), forgot the other two, it tended to happen to me when anet pushed multiple patches, in rapid succession like 2-3 per night or per play session.

Here's what I do. Around a major update make a copy of your gw.dat file.
For me that will be the Chapter 4 Preview weekend.

I also have periodical update every 2-4 months or right before a large permanent change.

When ever there is an update which trips my firewall ("program has changed"), I temporarily block the actually download of files. Then I update with the image switch. Using image on small updates only / changed files, not the entire game. The reason I do this is not for gw.dat issues per say... but my firewall and decompression during zone warp (firewalls fault) causing decompression to take 10x as long.

For some reason when gw updates your gw.dat file seems to be getting corrupted. Update your mother board drivers (to newer hard drive controller driver). Also try defragging hard drive more often. Maybe disable anti-virus when it's updating. You can see if the -repair switch works.

I personally would love some sort of utility that checks the integrity / crc of all the files for damage or corrupting then trigger a change / update from server for those files.

There is a support center you can contact. Though I highly suspect it has to do with an internet routing issue as I said in the last thread. reinstalling your game gives your client the ability to select a new server location.

Code 58 problems following an update are commonly caused by firewalls or router settings that are overly aggressive (and therefore blocking the modified .exe file that launches the game from accessing the internet).

There's an article on our knowledge base that provides further information, including possible solutions, and if the steps in the article are not conclusive in solving your problem please follow the final step to contact the support team who will be happy to assist you with solving the problem.

You should not need to reinstall to solve this issue.

Alex is right, i got it the other day and it was the recent Zonealram update that caused it...

Oh, good tip for you guys:

Make a second desktop icon using the -image tag, then drag it into your start menu so it auto checks on windows log in, this means if theres been an update whilst you've been out/asleep, it'll find it straight away and auto patch and decompress it for you

and no, it doesn't resource hog at all, and lets you know when theres been an update, especially, if like me, you like to read up on updates to see whats chenged before you log in and find out the game has been bought by Blizzard and its now an extension of WoW (BTW, that was sarcasm)
