Learn the common skill synergies that are used by your chosen class (read the subforums here, and learn from players in-game). This will allow you to construct a viable skillbar as you go through the game. You won't have access to some of the better skills off the bat, but in the early game you can essentially use what you like.
Also, learn the skills the enemies use, so that you can quickly get an idea of what the threat of each enemy is - and think of best how to deal with it. Many classes are simply brute force, a few others have disruptive capability.
As well as skill setups (from this forum, and in the various databases), get used to general combat tactics (positioning, aggro, etc) which will help keep you alive and may prevent an accidental group wipe.
Aside from that, have fun, and good luck. Any specific queries about your class itself are generally answered in the forum (use the search first if you have a question), so use the information as best you can.

Here are some tips:
1. Try as many professions as you can. Each profession has its own style of gameplay, and by trying each one, you'll be able to find one you are comfortable with.
2. When at low levels, pick up everything............gold....loot...everything. Early on, it may be hard to get gold so you can buy things like skills, new armor, etc. By picking up everything, you can turn around and sell it to the merchant. It may not be much, but eventually it will add up. (PvE)
3. Don't be afraid to try something. You'll never know if something works until you try it. Take some time and get familiar with the skills, set up, how things work. Many players have come up with builds for their character and it sounds great on paper, but in game it may be different because they missed 1 little angle to things. Two of your best friends are:
Guild Wars Guru
Guild Wiki
There are other very helpful sites out there with valuable information. These sites (along with all the others) are intended to be used as a reference. Don't think that "because Guru or Wiki said so" that something is "the best", "the worst", etc. Don't condone what you haven't tried.
4. Get into a good guild that compliments your style of play. There are guilds out there for every type of gamer out there. There are all-girl/guy guilds, striclty PvE guilds, strictly PvP guilds, Prophecies/Factions/Nightfall only guilds, etc. Make a wise choice and choose one that will accept you and help you learn the ropes and help you get the hang of things
5. Watch out for scammers. As said before, use common sense. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you are unsure about something, its best to ask someone that might (guildie, a friend, etc), that way you won't make a mistake you will regret later on.
6. if you are doing PvE, save your dyes!
7. Get used to things always changing. Guild Wars is constantly changing with each update ANet delivers. If you get easily upset because something that worked before an update no longer works after, then save yourself the time now. Things change, people adjust.
8. DO NOT SPAM THE LOCAL CHAT IN A TOWN OR OUTPOST WHEN TRYING TO SELL SOMETHING!!! If I could Super Bold this and bump the font size of this up to 96, I would. Use the Search tool to advertise. I put this in there hoping that ONE day, people can have normal conversations in the local chat in Lions Arch, Kaineng Center, and Kamadan. I keep praying.
9. Take your time. The Guild Wars games aren't all that hard, especially if you take your time, know what you are doing, and use common sense. There is a lot to explore in Guild Wars. There is plenty to do even after you have gone through one or all the games.
10. Learn and study builds to know when and in what situations to use certain skills. Certain things work well and compliment other things very well while some things are probably better off not on your skill bar. This can go for both PvE and PvP. Know and study the situation and what to use to counter or give you an advantage. (PvE and PvP)
11. Don't break any of the User Agreements. By this I mean don't buy E-Bay gold or items, download 3rd party bots/programs to try to get ahead. If you do and you are caught (and they are REALLY cracking down on it), you just lost yourself a Guild Wars game.
12. Have fun with the game. And the last part of that is key. It IS just a game....an addicting one.....but it still is just a game.
Those are some useful tips that you may want to consider when starting your adventures in Guild Wars. I am sure plenty of people can add to the list. Hope this helps.

I am fairly new to but one thing I knwo which is important after you get to the sourthern shiver peaks is listen your team mates and always make sure you know what the strategy is. Also try to be well coordinated because if your party isnt you will start off fighting a small mob and find yourself fighting half the enemies on the map. Not something you particulary want to do with a small group of people. If you have some pros with you, you will be fine but there arnt many, so its not good to rely on that.

the other responses are pretty good. just one thing. dont call your self a n00b, this leads to the overuse or the word
Newbie/Newb: new player who dosnt know much, but is willing to learn
n00b/nub: player who knows very little about the game(not necessarily new), that is not willing to learn anything from others and responds harshly to helpful criticism/advice.

I just hope the use of the word noob doesnt become like runescape. Everyone calls everyone noob there and it gets abit annoying lookign at the chat window and seeign peopel calling each other noobs all the time. Sure its funyn at first to see peopels reactions when other people call them noobs at first but it gets really annoyign after awhile and boring. The only surprising thing is they havnt blocked it there yet they ahve blocked almost everything else. I am so glad I quit runescape to play guild wars. The only good thign that happened because of runescape it introduced me to MMORPGs so in the end I discovered guild wars. Its a good free way to learn about MMORPGs but apart from that its the most boring game since pong. No offense of course to anyone here who play runescape or liek pong but after playing runescape long enough you will realize like I did you are suffering hours of tedious boredom just to get abit of data altered so that it says 50 strength instead of 49 and you can do one more damage woopitydo. Meanwhile you could playing you could be saving earth while annialating alien scum in Halo 3 or going through challenging fast paced, intense, action packed battles on guild wars where you cant look away for a second or you will find yourself and your party dead and that you have to start the mission over again.

If your looking for a free MMORPG go with Anarchy online(2nd best mmo in the world after gw) or silkroad online (super similar to gw). 2 great free games.
