Firewall doesn't like GW

Hello all,

I am currently using aol Safty and security center for my firewall. It has worked with GW just fine until a recent update. After i d/l the update from gw my aol asked if it was ok to allow GW access (due to the file having being updated). I click allow access and my guild wars locks up. It turns into just a white box and i have to close application due to it not responding. Even if I attempt to shut down GW through the task manager it will not stop being hung up and i have to restart my computer. If I turn off my aol firewall and just use windows firewall it works fine, and not other application i have are experiencing this trouble except guild wars. Any suggestions? I have toggled between firewalls for the past week or so but it is getting old.

(P.s. for all those who are gonna say aol sucks just save it please, I have avg/adaware/spybot etc but tbh aol caught my one and only virus in the past year, when the others didn't detect )

Well, I won't tell you aol sucks, as you seem to already know it. But you don't seem to know that avg (free) isn't the best of anti virus (one of the better free ones though) Ad-aware and spybot, don't detect viruses...they detect spyware.

But it seems the problem is obviously the firewall, so try aol support maybe? Or guildwars support? Just an idea.

I used to do the whole firewall and anti virus deal but just found all the problems anybody got were from doing things they shouldnt be doingwhich my friends and family are always getting me to fix. I havent had a firewall or anti virus for like 3 years now and never have 1 single problem. To me the whole firewall thing is a scare to make people buy software and is only needed for businesses. A hacker could really give a rats ass about random people with nothing to profit from.

added-AOL is by definiton a virus. I wold like to tell you a few things about their business but I dont want the possibility of a ban from guru.

Here is a suggestion that works for me. Go to www.zonelabs.com and get ZoneAlarm free. It only requires that you register it with you E-Mail address and I have been using it on my laptop for some time with no problems at all. It does give a warning everytime that GW updates but after that there has been no conflict for me at all. I use the Pro version at home on my gaming computer but that is just my choice and you realy do not have to go that far if you do not want to. I have heard several complaints about the AOL firewall not letting games through so you are not alone in this.

So uh, when was the last time you looked at US-Cert or say I don't thought about your computer as free real estate for root kits, boots, Trojans, and backdoors, all of which can be hidden by root kits and a multitude of ways. Just because you don't see a problem or have a problem doesn't mean you are safe or clean. The average computer connected to broadband is infected within 8 minutes of unprotected access.

And the average computer fanbase is full of people that dont know much about the internets and believe in free ipods and music downloads. Its stuff like googling free videos/music downloads that can kill a computer. IF your knowledgeable then you are fine. The computers worst threat is not a virus but the user itself.
