I dont want to try and sound anti-Anet, and pro-Blizzard. I love GWs and I always will. It has aspects which are far better then WoW and vice versa.
But I suspect that GWs won more because its free. Had it been a pay-monthly one, then Blizzard would have had it.
So its more down to good sales-technique for Anet. Unfortunately that reward doesnt necessarily mean its the best one available. It just means its the most cost effective and more widely available to more players.
But woo at winning.

Nah, i dont think so mate. GW was revolution to MMO type girls. WoW is great but it offers still the same things as other mmorpgs. Only in new design and... with name of Warcraft. The same cookie with new cover. I played many MMORPG (started with MUD's). My first One was ultimate ultima on line. To be honest from that nothing change in mmorpg. Everything is the same... with new cover.
Anyway if you are looking for MMORPG (xxx levels, play with xxx ppl in the same place, xxx of everything) you shoud choose any MMORPG game on the market.
If you are looking for strategic, tactical cooperation game you shoud choose GW. Thats why MMORPG uber-pwnzors will be bored fast, and will go elsewhere to their job in WoW style game. Only ppl who will fall in love with GW will stay and will be with GW forever. Maybe not playing games like already some of us, but they are connected to GW thru community of GW.
Everybody shoud remember. WoW and GW are different games with different gameplay. Ah and mmorpg.com is one off the best mmorpg sites with fresh look on mmo based games.

Hi,
Had it been a pay-monthly, the amount of money generated would have totally changed the company, its spirit and (of course) the game itself, such that guessing who would win would be down to knowing how communities of millions of people would react to different graphics, game features and game play. I doubt that there's one person able to do that any better than the people in charge of the main MMORPGs, we certainly don't (or if you feel you really do, you should create your MMORPG company!)
From a technical and economic point of view, what Anet achieved is real tour de force and that's what all the awards are all about.
Best for you may not be best for me, neither to our Korean GW fellow or our South American WoW friend. One could even continue the discussion by saying that the next awards will be for the totally free MMORPGs (more and more comming every months), but that's only fair. With more people comming to GW (and some leaving), more stuff put by Anet in their games and support (it amazes me to see that NCsoft and Anet people wander in these forums, what an incredibly smart social model for a game, and so rewarding for a community where the best ideas can be put to try, even if it's not possible to try everything!), I think these awards are trully deserved.
I mean, look at CE boxes, they are really beautiful things, combining art, fun and an excellent game (ok all this is very subjective, but no one forced us to buy it!). Honestly, Anet deserves praise, they only asked me to pay £10 for GW and £18 for NF and I've got hundreds of hours of beautiful gameplay, great artwork (even a nice behind-the-scene DVD ), a great community striving to improve the game, share its knowledge and help people (yes the "random acts of kindness" still exist!). And I'm only in the middle of it, haven't finished both games, haven't tried PvP seriously (this make you realise how close you can get to the game mechanic and try to use your mind a bit more, knowing that you will have you use your fingers in any MMORPG ), etc.
[i]Bravo[]/i] to Anet and GW!

I'm actually not a huge MMO fan. I don't love being dependant on needing PUGs to play a game, and thats why I played GWs first. GWs was my first MMO/RPG online game, which I ever played and as I said, I love(d) it.
I didnt spend two years in there getting KOABD just because I had nothing else to do. I'm passionate about it and I wanted to be the best I could and explore every square inch of the game. GWs does have alot of benefits over WoW, such as graphics, a far nicer and easier interface. A far better control system and questing system.
Its simplisity compared to WoW is both is benefit and its downfall.
But it doesnt have enough content to keep you interested for long enough. I got through 3 characters, each with 15k armor (my main one with 3 sets), and by then I was bored. I got my main through all 3 campaigns and it just felt empty.
I tried to do a Rit to try healing and protection, and the enthusiam had gone.
But this is all detracting from the OP'ers post. Its great that GWs has won the prize. It deserves to because it did something other MMOs didnt. It gave us a free online game, and did a damn good job doing it.
But being free has limited the game. GWs does have outstanding aspects, but I wouldnt say its tactically side was one of them. You can complete the game without using any thought or tactics.
I dont want to get into a GWs Vs WoW arguement because this is a GWs place, but when an alternative game offers alot more content, its outways alot of the good stuff in GWs. Its better to have a game which lasts then one which drys up after a few months or years.
But again... Woo at GWs winning.

If Anet succeeds in keeping GW away from uninovation and exploitation (you know, this trend to want to transform virtual pleasure and gain into real one, except it's mainly about money) in the next few years, I think they'll keep on growing and will truly deserve major awards. And I should add: the GW community actually completely share these awards, there are so many committed people giving away their time and brains! (just saw the Community Days news on GW.com, what a great idea!)

BRING BACK MUDS!!!!! that was true Player kill :P

The problem with GW is that everyone thinks you're either a PvE or a PvP player, therefor splitting your game experience in 2. Right now I PvP alot, maybe next year I'll do some PvE. Enjoying both games > WoW.

Being able to jump from any kind of content and enjoy it should be what this game is about. ^^
Ive have friends who try to drag me to DDO and WoW but they fail >:O
Big_Iron
I've tried multiple MMO's, including WoW. GW has been the only one that's kept my attention and I've stuck with. And it's not just because it's free. It's a beautiful game and loads of fun to play.
Congrats Anet.

Congrats Anet...
These awards say GW has expanded the definition of MMORPG succesfully.
They may not have set out to do this (see the FAQ on GW and you will see they claimed GW not a MMORPG according to the current definition)

From those short paragraphs they had explaining why each game received their awards, it seems the only reason Guild Wars won, and World of Warcraft lost, was that WoW didn't get their expansion out on time and GW got two out.
So congrats GW on getting out two expansions before WoW could even get one.

I think you underestimate the amount of content in the WoW Expansion. It takes on average 100+ hours to level from 60-70 in the World of Warcraft Expansion (and that's only if you've played the Beta and know what to do; It'll probably take twice as long for the average person), and that's not counting the end-game raids and the new lowlevel content. It takes on average 24 hours to complete Factions or Nightfall, with not much replay value.
I prefer WoW to GW, ATM, because World of Warcraft has...replayability. For PvE, once you beat all the campaigns in Guild Wars, there's not much else you can do. Run DoA or UW one million times, with a 1% chance of getting something worthwhile? Forget it. And what's "worthwhile" in a game where money is insignificant? In WoW, you can do a lot, lot more at maximum level. There are about 10 non-gimmicky instances at maximum level, and you are nearly always guranteed to get an improvement to your character somehow...
Contrary to what someone said in the thread earlier, I think that the distict PvE/PvP split is what killed Guild Wars. It split a weak playerbase nearly in half. True, hardcore PvPers who top the ladder don't PvE. And they make up a significant number of high-level players. WoW blends PvE and PvP so perfectly it's hard to look at Guild Wars the same.
Now, on topic, Guild Wars only won, as said, because there was no competition.

My friend that plays WoW says there was already a level 70, 28 hours after the release of the expansion. So I doubt it takes 100 hours to do.

SO this goes to show, all you people who whine and bitch about everything you DONT like in Guild Wars ~ you dont matter

I've played WoW and EQ2 and the thing that I love about GW that neither of those have is that you can really customize your playstyle to however you wish. My mesmer has been primary healer for some missions with great success. It's very neat all the possibilites.
And GW doesn't feel like you are constantly restricted by what gear you have and what level you are. It's more about learning the right abilities and bringing the right ones for the area you are tackling.
It's a very cool game model, and it is nice that it is being credited as such.

Wow.. Another WoW thingie majig.. please, i'm not going to say why or even if gw is better but i'd rather not have to spend 12 hours a day to level up 2 levels, i did get really sick and tired of it. If you enjoy grind , good for you! If people like me don't.. well lets say it's pointless to start the whole comparing WoW to gw -.-.

well speaking of WoW...ive played a LOT of mmorpgs lol but i get bored in like 2 or 3weeks...i played WoW from when it came out to about 7months ago and left that to play GW and its not cause the price. I just prefer GW to WoW since on WoW i got to level 60...got warlord...and basically you do everything and it becomes boring and it wasnt a challenge since its easy once you play it for a while. GW is more challenging, fun and i can keep making more and more characters and not get bored...well factions doesnt count lol id rather die than play that some more lol

I think WoW and GW comparisons are like apples and oranges. Sure they are both roundish but that's about it. I played WoW for all of a month and decided it wasn't for me. For one thing the Fee, whether it equates to approximately the same as buying the expansions for GW as they come out or not, killed it. It's not because I'm cheap but just because with my job I can easily go a month without playing and then what? I either pay for a month I don't use or I'm just boned. The second thing was the cartoonish graphics and the way they blended the PvP and PvE. You end up with jackasses walking around challenging you to duels every fifteen minutes because you happen to be slightly lower in level than them. It's annoying. I think GW was spot on in seperating the two. Granted the number of jackasses differs from server to server but still. The third thing that killed it was the grind. That 100 hours to level is spent doing the same monotonous, boring, god awful crap over and over and over again. At the end of the day you can tell it's a Blizzard production and it stinks of Diablo 2 and it's ilk with the grind. I'm surprised they didn't implement the old hostile system and let people wander around PKing for no apparent reason.
