PvE Farming Ladder
Chewbacca Defense
I don't know if this idea is ludicrous, but since farming is something ANet does not condone, they will always be in an uphill battle trying to fight it. The reason is there will always be a community geared towards this kind of grind.
So, a solution is to give that community what they want! The idea is to have a level or map where characters (solo or team) compete to kill as many monsters in the shortest amount of time.
The mobs may or may not drop treasure depending on the implications of whether or not this idea will backfire.
At the end of the month or season, the winner(s) will get some kind of reward.
This will appease the farming community.
Another event could be a sealed deck farming ladder. This idea may be too difficult for the beginner, but would make the farming level much more difficult.
Similiarily, with other problems that they try to fight, they could implement a running ladder. Best time to finish the Dork's Run at the end of the season could win some kind of reward.
It's always much more difficult to fight against something than to use it's inherit attributes to work with it.
Anyway, thoughts? Is this idea crazy?

I like the idea of a map to farm gold and weak treasures for pure cash, but the problem with that is it'll be exploited at some point by commercial farmers, and would likely devalue the worth of gold and such. I'd love to go to a place like that to get the money for services and such for my guild, but in the end, it would wind up being abused and would have to be shut down. Anet would take the heat for doing it in the first place and for shutting it down after the commercial farmers start raking in even more RL money- a lose-lose scenario for Anet.
Running isn't something that's really supported by Anet, mainly because it does take away from the value of the game. I know that, for example, Proph is really long and the occasional run helps get you to a later point in the game faster, but it comes at the expense of having done it yourself and learned to how to deal with the challenges along the way. You can't learn to play your monk, tank, 'sin, etc., if someone does all the hard work for you.
I understand that some people don't have a lot of time to invest in GW, like myself, but maybe I'm in a part of the minority that says that you should deal with the challenges in front of you so that you can help others along the way, rather than being stuck at the end of the game and not knowing how to fight bosses like the Lich/Shiro/Abaddon, etc.

Isn't this fairly similar to a challenge mission? I mean, you're proposing more structure surrounding it, sure, but still. Anyway, I really enjoy challenge missions and things similar to them, so it sounds good to me.

i like the concept, but in reality only the bots would be at the top of the ladder.

Perhaps there could be some type of elite title, trinket award (souvenir), trinket emote, etc. for successfully soloing some of the most difficult areas or bosses without dying, just for prestige. Solo farming is my favorite part, and it would be cool to have proof of what people have done. (There could also be a slightly different type for successfully killing difficult mobs as groups, especially those who stay alive the whole time.) If only we unlock a funny emote that references the fight, that would be awesome. Our char could brag about it in the outposts, if only with silly body language and statment triggered by "/[boss]". Or maybe the impossible to kill beast's bone could drop, with "_____ killed by ____ on [date]" etched in it for one-manners and multiple copies of "_____'s bone" for groups, (customised for account?) with no practical use. Corny, but we'd collect them. There are 20's, and then there are experienced 20's. Guild Wars should give us something to show for our experience. I bet there are people would buy extra chars to serve as trophy boxes. Many of such trinkets would probably be deleted but I think receiving them for the first time would always feel great.

Then perhaps ANet will know which accounts to look for bots or to ban first.

But there are people who don't have any life and just farming every time. But they aren't bots.

For a farming ladder, yes you are crazy.
For what you described (challenge missions) I suggest you go play one. They've been out for around a year now.

Anyways, why not have a level/map like the OP said, except killing more monsters gets you "tokens" which you can trade in for leet armor (more tokens=cooler skin), max weapons (customized for you, if you want mods on them...more tokens), ect. It wouldnt really *hurt* the economy, and would make it easyer for people who dont have large amounts of money to get max modded weapons at least, and the people who still wanted to spend 5m on a crystalline sword...still could.

How do you plan to count this? The human players are usually farming the greens and then sell them, without beating the hell out of the same type of monsters =) Who's got the most ectos/gold in their sash, along with the other detailed character stats - may be, the number of poor critters killed in PvE - no =) Why not to have a ladder for something like who's got the "highest" Legendary Survivor & have passed 3+ campaigns with 0 deaths? =) Sounds like a better PvE ladder idea to me.
tomcruisejr
there's an ingame "ladder" in factions challenge missions.

Let's make a ladder to see who spends the most time in Grotto!!!
Yay, I love fun ladders!
I think Anet have much more to worry about right now, not that game balance and crappy GvG and HA are something to worry about. This game is all about who can farm the most!
