Problem with error 58 after skills balance
Noz Crow
Ok for some crazy reason after the skills balancing weekend i have been having problems getting error 58 when trying to log in. Nothing has changed on my end. The first few times it happened i just kept trying and after an hour it finally let me in. The next time it happened i had to restart my hughesnet (directway) broadband modem. Now this is not working either. I have played for well over a year this way and only now am having a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If he's been playing for over a year and nothing much has changed at his end (or on his router) then it's not necessarily his router/firewall that is having problems.
I've just had this exact same issue, not the first time either, and nothing has changed for me either e.g. no router changes, no firewall changes. I tried turning off firewall and antivirus and also opening up a few ports on the router - made no difference.
What has worked for me: rename GW.dat in your Guild Wars folder to GW.bad or something. You can do the same for the gw.exe as well or just delete that one. Then reinstall from the DVD.
That got me past the login screen after downloading stuff. Bear in mind you'll probably be downloading stuff again when you do manage to log in (at outposts etc). If all is working well you can go ahead and delete the gw.bad file to save some disk space (it was just for backup)

No, none of the suggestions have helped and nothing has changed on my end at all. And yes i did use the marvelous search feature and no one had my exact problem, but thanks for the thoughtful suggestion and help. I have found that if I just exit out and keep trying it eventually loads the message window ( you know the don't use bad programs, hey it is a 10 times drop weekend) and then i can log in. So I have no idea why a skill update would change the server i try to log into. Just kinda strange!!
