Try out for working with oilpastels... its not my thingy...
this is ren's monk btw

I think oil pastels work the best with coloured paper. It gives them a bit more depth and you don't need to work so hard to come up with a background colour.
But yeah, pastels are hard to work with. Not to mention messy. I think this is very good for trying out, though. The textures are gorgeous, and overall it looks quite interesting. ^^
I'd recommend some easier medium for colour practice though. Oil pastels just cause headaches. XD

Now I've tried oil myself a few times, so I know just how goddamn hard it is, so given this is your 1st piece in a long time using this medium, I have to say I'm impressed. But anyway, on to the critiquing
Her nose doesn't look right compared to her mouth and eyes. It's hard to describe, but i think I can put it down to the shape with which you've drawn the nose - it extends further in on her face than I would say looks natural and makes her mouth look like it's offset to the left side of her face. It's only a case of a couple of strokes with the pastel too many, but it's enough to make it look a bit odd. It may just be me though - I have a very detailed image in my head of what my monk should look like and that may well cloud my judgement of the finer points of this piece. So, over to everyone else?
It is a nice pic tho.

Well, the piano we have is partially electric, that means, you can play it acoustic (the most beautiful), or electric (like a keyboard but with heavier keys) which is way less beautiful.
I used the line in opening from my mp3 player and connected it with the line out opening of my electric piano case. I needed to connect both a left and a right Mono line-out to make the music come from 2 boxes (if you have 2)
Its also possible to just record by using a microphone, but it won't sound this clean.
Glad you liked it ^^

Oh and sorry for not editing the post before this one ... a bit silly. I took the liberty of piecing it together and resizing it so that it would fit properly. I also tried cleaning up the bad patches of the scan, but it didn't turn out too well. Maybe I should have used Photoshop instead of paint...?
Anyway, to that end, here's both bits of the picture together for everyone to see:
I'll give the doodle a listen later, it's quite busy at work the now.

And ren, thanks for merging the two pictures Hey now, no tweaking Krysten's "attributes"
Oh and a cool idea I just had, why not turn Aimee's staff into a naginata with the blade on the left? I think that would look different.
I've got some free time now, so I'll try giving you some detailed feedback on what I like and dislike about the piece. First, I'll get the bad out the way, because theres much less of it. I know it's what I said, but Krysten does need to be rounded out a little. Only a little though, as too curvy and she would lose the slim, athletic look.
Second, Sakura's left leg is wrong, but you were the 1st one to notice that anyway, so thats no big deal.
The last thing is perhaps what bothers me most. Put simply, the spacing between characters is uneven and makes the piece look a little odd - I'd suggest adding more detail to Rena to fill in the extra gap. A big cape flowing out behind her, maybe. She's always wanted a big cape anyway Although the wind IS blowing the other way, so...
Now the good stuff
Rena's face: That is exactly what she's about; confident, but more than a little peeved at something or other. Her pose - leaping into battle, is very dynamic and compliments her appearance perfectly. I have no further comments ^^
Krysten + Sakura: They have a lot of energy in the way they're drawn - the odd angles and way that Krysten is off to one side give them the impression of a lot of speed - exactly what we wanted. I would suggest perhaps a different look for Krysten's face though. Right now, she looks a little indifferent to her surroundings. Try maybe a more concentrated look - wrinkling her brow in concentration, as riding Sakura isn't easy, after all
Aimee: The innocent look that harbours a dark secret... Aimee is secretly a fiend that feasts on the pies of the fallen and... no wait, I'm trying to provide feedback here... Well, it's an interesting pose for sure, crouched like she's about to pounce. It makes her look a bit short though and she's not one of these monks that are knee high to a dwarf And yeah, I'm liking the innocent look, (it's the big kawai eyes that do it. ) And is she about to pounce on a pie? I guess I'll just have to wait and find out
Anyway, if you're on guild wars tonight, I'll speak to you then, mistical. Meantime, hope I've been helpful
EDIT: HOW MANY smilies did I use?!

Good points there, I'll try to work on it ^^, the gap between ren and krysten was intended btw ^^ I wanted some nice scenery in between.
And another quiet important thing, how would u like em coloured? I can do many different things just keep in mind that painting will take a long time.

That merged image looks just great. You've managed to find interesting poses for the characters again, and they fit quite well together.
Now for the Constructive Criticism(TM). The background is still quite unclear. I can see the characters, but I'm having a hard time seeing how they fit into the background, or even what is happening with them. I'm guessing there is some magic action going on which doesn't look so clear in the sketch, so I think I'll wait for the finished piece before commenting any more on that.
Now for the placing of the characters. The gap bothers me too... it's nice to have some scenery (and it would really fit this image too), but you lose a lot of the activity between characters when you space them so far apart. Right now it looks like there's two separate "groups"... the ele on her own and the other two together. Scenery could be used to compliment the group, rather than drive them apart. I think that if you add some of the magic effects, it might make it look a bit more "together", so again I think I'll wait for the finished piece. I'm really liking how this piece has so much action in it already!
Oh, and your new piano doodle was beautiful. I noticed some parts were a bit rough, but overall it's very neat and flows together nicely. I hope you're feeling better... sometimes playing music or drawing can really help out when you feel depressed.

It can indeed perynne music is a great way to get rid of a depression..

Well, I made up my mind, please, if you would, colour the piece with pencils
Anyway, what we were talking about the other day, I think it would be best if you emailed some profile shots to me, which would save all the mucking about in game. I actually have a few poses visualised in my head right now, but drawing them is going to be another matter...
(For all those who are like wtf is he on about; Mistical is very kindly letting me practice my drawing on his characters. Well, probably just one of his characters to start with, but then I'm not exactly what you'd call talented, just an aspiring amateur.)

Awesome-o-maximo~! really really good pictures!!^^
Mistical miss For Noanoa and Nian because I love their art My first drawing tablet picture borrowed the tablet from my brother.. and some colours dont show up it appears (the ligh skin colour on the monk for example) Moa Bird Cultist
Actually, the red looks patchier than the skin, the same with the turquoise. What program did you use? And another idea, it may be because you saved it as a gif - gif format pictures have a lower colour range because they use an 8 bit palette, as opposed to the standard 16/24 bit palettes used in most other common picture files.
It looks nice, besides that, how did it feel working with a tablet as opposed to a mouse? When I first got my Graphire, it took me a few weeks to adjust. Mistical miss better now? I hardly used mouse before, when drawing, this works a lot easier though ^^. Drawing with 'real' materials is still lots easier though :P Noanoa
Awww so cute :3 *saves* Thank you !
ravensong
Ah fun as always
Watching your drawings makes me think: "If only the world was an innocent place..." Keep it up! Start using colors more says I! Moa Bird Cultist
Yeah, much better, guess I was right, heheheh
And I totally know what you mean about 'real' materials Anyway, now it's correct, I have to say, excellent colour work as always. Though I've not seen many of your colourings, I'd say you're definitely improving as you do them. DJJD2006
