I dont know whether any of you are Dune fans like me but Guild Wars really reminded me of it. For one thign the crystal desert was awesoem and really reminded me of dune with massive sand worms and all and how it was fairly dangerous. I have heard for three missions in Nightfall or Factions you get to be a massive sand worm becayuse oyu have to go over a desert that humans cant survive on. I dont know about you but that sounds awesome to me and I cant wait to do it. Also the whoel Nightfall campagin is based in the desert. Thats all the similarities I can think of at the moment but I am sure there is more I ahvnt thoguht of. I bet will these similarities atleast one person in arena net has read the dune series and is a dune fan. Anyway all they need to do now is create a fre-man suit for each class and that owuld be awesome.

Frank Herbert used the English language beautifully. You don't.

I do believe you listed all the similarities.

Given that Dune really not about deserts and worms, but about humans, I'd say the link is very weak, at best. They just share the scenery.

Ok...I have read some of the books, seen the movie and I have also seen the mini-series that they had on a while back and I really can't see any connection. Just because there are worms and the Crystal Desert, doesn't mean it has any similiarity to Dune. If you do that, then you have to say that Guild Wars has similiarities to the movie Tremors. That movie had big worms and had a setting in Nevada (a lot of desert there). Also, only in Nightfall can you get into a Junundu Worm and its not really a desert....is Sulfur. Factions has nothing to do with a desert and the entire Nightfall game is NOT based in the desert. If I had to pick a type of area, I would say it is more of a Savannah than anything. It is a nice try, but I think your points failed to be convincing.

Dune Vs. Guildwars:
Sand Worms: Check
Melee Combat: Check
Atomics: Eh, I don't think so, Death Nova maybe?
Fremen: Still waiting for those crazy guys.
Heroes Destroy Civilization: No
Religous Savants: The White Mantle
Extensive Drug Use: Not sure if ale counts.
Morbidly Obese Pedophiles: Not sure on that one either, maybe Confessor Dorian?

In all I'd say while some similarites exist, Guild Wars certainly isn't saturated with Dune.

ANY TIME you see giant desert worms it was inspired by Dune, and yes, that includes Tremors. I belive this concept was a Frak Hurbert orginal. If anyone can show me a refrence to such creatures that pre-dates Dune I have no problem admiting I'm wrong.

But has far as comparing GW to Dune, the worms are are about it.

I'm surprised nodoby has mentioned yet that many of the Paragon faces have pure blue eyes, like the Fremen.

I'm sure, if I hit the mythology books, I could find some dragon with the wyrm body form that lived in a desert...

That said, that's not to say Frank necassarily knew about said hypothetical desert wyrm legend, and his sandworms aren't exactly dragons either...

Some of the faces for the Paragon and Dervish reminded me instantly of Fremen.

Giant desert worms? Possibly.

Giant worms? Not a chance. See: Dholes.

Close, very close. But I am refering to Giant DESERT Worms. Though Herbert may have been aware of Lovecrafts Dholes when he wrote Dune.

Now you got me really interested in weather or not the idea really did originate with Herbert....time to do some research.

i remember that i saw a monster once called zudoukar or something which reminded me of the imperial Sardaukar from dune. Also riding worms like fremen reminded me of Dune. So ye.. No need to flame him =)
