AOE targeting system
clawofcrimson
the request is simple.... since the target for an aoe spell is usually on the move.... it would be nice to have a new targeting system that allowed us to place a aoe spell (meteor shower for instance) in a location rather than only being able to target a moving foe...
for instance...click meteor shower (holding another key or something) and then click the ground where you want to shower....
this would make the "nuking" aspect of the game much more fun in my opinion...and many possibilities would open up.
if there is already a thread on this or if you have reasons why this wouldnt work please post

I play a nuker most of the time, and I would love this. My only concern would be the effect it has on PvP. It would make bottlenecked areas like bridges or stairs impassable. A couple of Nukes can just steak-out the area, using MS or Sandstorm from a comfortable distance. In PvE however, I think it would be great.
lightblade
That would make things a little too easy.
clawofcrimson
true...true... but it would be a very fun addition in my humble opinion...its not like these aoe skills are hard to get around anyway.... it would just make them a bit more usefull... the aoe skills that have a time period (MS) would become more powerful ...yes... but i think thats what they need.

Personally I don't see where it is going to be "too overpowered". Yeah so you can now target a choke point with AoE damage more easily, that is usually a good spot to place some AoE damage. Personally I can see it used to help in stopping retreats and stopping progressions for a little time, but as for damage, it will be just like AoE is now, dont step in it dont get damaged. As long as when you say anywhere, you mean within the casting range circle.

Personally I'd prefer at the location of target creature, while only foes actually get damaged, strategic spirits could be placed to act as a creature. note definition of creature is the same as [skill]Heal Area[/skill]'s definition... so many spirits don't count...

Yeah, too easy, it would mean you could really screw up runners...

AoE needs something like this. Maybe a special targeting mode that gives you a visual clue of the area that'll be affected as well. However, not all AoE spells should have this as a tradeoff.

What they could do is that you could activate a targettable AoE skill, then your mouse would turn into a missile sort of thing with a green radar indicating it's AoE, then when you click either your mouse, or the hotkay for the skill again, the skill will begin its activation... something like that?

I have often suggested that you should be able to target DoT damage on any object, Foe, Allie, Self or even an object. Truthfully, they are not worth anything unless you can lock down a tactical location, so the arguement against making them more functional is pretty meaningless, since they are pretty meaningless without improved function.
Flopjack
My friends and I have also thought up of this idea. I agree with it too! Nukers should not be limited to having to target an enemy just because they want to use a nuking spell.
clawofcrimson
i suppose their could be some problems with all nuker teams in some pvp matches... but as I stated the time limit spells are easy to skirt/walk out of anyway

While we're at it... let's make Chaos Storm stick to whomever it was cast on.

In order for DoT damage to stick to a particular unit, it would have to be a removable hex. I don't think this is a bad idea, but it would likely face a reduction in power since it cannot be escaped, and requires a skill to remove, do you really want that?
I say just expand all DoT damage to area effect, and half most of the recast times.

Yeah, i think that a placeble (radar or something) area for nuke spell would be great. Give more freedom to strategis.
There could be a hotkey you press or something, that active the radar showing the area that the spell will act, you press, and start the activation time.
I think it could be great for the game.

Like placing a flag on the radar or ground for heroes.
It could just be a testing weekend thing to see how it works.

please note..this would not effect ALL skills ...the skills it would effect would be those that say target foes location like these...
[card]churning earth[/card] [card]earthquake[/card] [card]unsteady ground[/card] [card]meteor shower[/card] [card]fire storm[/card] etc...
and possibly the ones that target self location like:
[card]ward against melee[/card] [card]bed of coals[/card]

I'm an anti-dumb down man myself.
And untargeted skill opens way too many doors to abuse/blatant overuse, and if it were instituded, you would have to prepare for skill nerfing.
If Instituted, you would also have to do that for every applicable AoE spell, not just the nukes you want it on. Leads to some devastating skills from other classes, as well as remote heal area.
Go play a war in knight online, that's how their AoE's work, frequently the wars consists of both teams nuking a bottleneck, and people trying to dash through, and failing. That may have changed due to map updates, though.
I believe the impact would overbalance the classes, and completely turn Gw upside down.
If you want traps, play a freaking ranger, lennymon, had it right.
