What does it mean when the ping ball disappears?

Sometimes during a mission or pvp it just goes away and a few minutes after, it comes back.

You're getting low on Ping Toner, better put in a new cartridge.

ok, seriously, its probably just a latency issue. Maybe you could ask this in the tech forum?

The lightning bolt means your client is downloading content (such as a streaming update) in the background while you're playing.

Sometimes my ping indicator will vanish as well, but if you put your cursor in the same spot, the tooltip will still come up, so it's simply invisible temporarily. Not a clue why, though.

Mine does that sometimes. And it's not that I'm lagging or anything. I was in FoW earlier and had noticed it wasn't there. The tool tip does show, but it doesn't say my pings. Just the server and my fps.
