Do you change builds for different missions?
Vandal2k6
Just wondered if anyone changes their builds depending on the mission they're going to take. I don't mean things like FoW or the UW, just normal game missions. Reason I ask is that I've almost finished NF with my Paragon using the same skills I've had from the start (apart from one elite I added about a 3rd into the game). It works for me but wanted to know if people found it easier if they set their skills specifically for the coming mission?

It depends on the profession/secondary and how you play the game.
Some people set up their skill bar and leave it forever in PvE and others are constantly tweaking it for maximum results.
If you play a mesmer, changing your skill bar is a way of life.

GreatBabai
I play mostly as warrior/x and like to tweak my builds every time i get into new mission/area or just for experimenting. Frequently changing a secondary profession (i work on skillhunter title, so changing it a lot) too adds a little fun with creating new builds and testing it on encountered mobs.
LifeInfusion
If you don't change every time you change into a zone with different skill setups, then you are selling yourself short. It's like running Divert Hexes in a condition heavy area with few hexes.
blood4blood
Yes, fairly often, but usually it only means changing a skill or two if I'm still serving the same basic function. Ex. Bringing both Shields Up! and Watch Yourself! when there are lots of enemy archers around, not using Shields Up! in areas with no archers. Other times it may mean switching my whole skillbar, secondary profession, etc. Ex. Switching roles as a necromancer from MM to SS to battery to wells to orders depending on the area I'm playing and what the party needs.
darktyco
Almost always, except for my monk. There is almost always a certain skill I want for encounter X or Y that I don't have equipped yet (i.e. cripple, interrupt, etc)
Tiny Killer
It depends on the mission/area and what character I am playing at the time. For the most part though, I do have a general purose build for each of my characters that will get me through most areas of the game along with many specialized builds that I use. I do enjoy swapping out skills rather often and will be doing that frequently after this skill update.
Rodhin Kinning
It all depends on the mission or area. But yes mainly I do. In some areas a MM is a good idea and works well and others its very usless and you need another build as in my case SS. And then it changes on chapters.
King Kong Monkey
I only switch my elite and 1 or 2 skills depends on the build i play and how it work with the other monk. The weird thing that i always play in PvE with ''PvP'' builds. For example i did Nightfall with a Blessed Light Mo/A and Factions with an Boon Prot but i never used build to counter foes...
And i won't stop playing Blessed Light Mo/A in PvE

Kook~NBK~
I don't change things around much for any of my characters. I'll usually swap out one or 2 skills to better suit the situation. There's only a couple of missions where I'll re-do my whole skill bar.
Navaros
Hardly ever. I have found that if you are using a good build to begin with, there is very rarely a need to change anything on it for any of the missions. If if something does needs to be changed, it's only one or two skills. But usually, nothing.
Smile Like Umean It
I like to change builds just for the fun of it and test out how effective they are. I don't do it for every mission though.
the_jos
I do switch skills on missions, but this also depends on profession and team.
The only character I keep switching on is my mesmer, but my current illusions build seems to work quite well on all enemies.
On most professions I have a couple of templates I switch.
Within those templates, I change only one or two skills. For example, I have a 'broad head' template on my ranger, but when I switch the elite to barrage it's also a nice build.

EPO Bot
I always make completely different builds. Never use the same twice (in short succession that is).
Curse You
For the most part, my Necromancer's build gets changed every once in a while, but basically stays the same.
The reason: I use a SS build. I have yet to encounter a mob that I have been unable to bash around using SS. Quite simply, I have made a build that can work on basically anything.

SF eles work for 99.9% of pve, why change?
kitsune23
My skill bar gets changed for just about every mission depending on what it contains. In some cases it might be small tweaks, in others it will be a large change. Actually, I do the same for my heros as well.
Ashleigh McMahon
I only tend to change if I know my current build is going to fail.
For example I'd switch to heal from prot if I knew I'd be against mesmer monsters.

wetsparks
I have one basic build that can get me through the game, but if I fail at a mission and there is something I can do to change that outcome, then I'll tweak my build.
shadowmist
I change my builds all the time. Heck, for me half the fun in GW is making up new builds. Of course, I'm always wary to bring new builds into a group enviroment, so I run them through some basic tests on the pvp island thing. Then when I go to a PvE mission, I choose which one I think will do the best and have at it.
The builds I run almost always have skills I consider optional. So I'll always mod them when going on certain missions. It's like not bringing shields up! on Ruins of Morah mission... that skill just makes that mission cake ^_^

Depends on which character I`m playing:
Ranger - set build for almost every area in all chapters
Warrior - same as above
Assasin - same as above
Necro - MM or SS set builds
Ele - Nuker = fire, Spiker = Air, Tanking/Nuker = Earth, Hexer = Water, all set builds
Monk - Boon/Prot set build and don`t like making changes as I mess up when I do
Mesmer - always changing it
Paragon - given that up for now but was a set build
Dervish - set but about to change it (work in progress)
Rit - set but keep tweaking due to updates
In general I will only change 1 or 2 skills due to certain bosses in a mission or area, ie. Unwaking Waters and interupts or The Drought and prot spirit etc..

Ele: Sometimes I put power drain on my SF heroes(or my ele) to ease the pain of the deep freezes from the rains of torment or for the 140% energy area.
Necro: For Death I use order of undeath when mobs can't one-shot the minions(torment) and I use jagged bones otherwise. For curses I use SS of course, but sub in mark of pain and/or barbs if there's a MM on my team. Double defile enchantments for areas with madness titans/dervish enchantment-heavy mobs. For Blood it's pretty much always spoil victor. This is pretty useful if your party is constantly in danger of dying and your enemies strike multiple foes. This works well in torment where the mobs use barrage and hundred blades. The torment rangers Barrage, take 600 damage and then immediately troll unguent. Heh.
Monk: ZB + LoD with the occasional ZB + LoD + Divert Hexes for hex heavy areas(torment).
In short, pretty much the same build throughout nightfall except torment.

Really depends on the mission/area I'm in. Considering I have already created 20+ templates for my chars, it's getting pretty silly. My mesmer alone has 8 templates of different skills.
JoeKnowMo
I try to develop 5 or more builds for the character I'm playing. Then I run whatever builds suits my mood or an experimental build unless I know the area requires some specific build.
If I get walloped I won't go back in the with the same build.
Also, the builds that my heroes use will change depending on the build I'm using (esp w para or rit).
I proly have 25+ builds saved for my para alone - motiv, command, axe, scythe, bow, spear, pet, anthem heavy, caster support, warder, spirits, SF, evasion, etc.

like most people it depends;
ele - pretty much set, usually just 1 skill change depending on the rest of the party, if they want me to be anything else but fire nuking i just throw a build together on the spot.
monk - constantly adjusting to suit wherever we're headed for and to complement what the other monk is running. has about 5 templates with blank spots to fill in.
necro and ranger - pretty much switch between set cookie cutter builds >.>;;; though sometimes switching a skill or two to suit the party's needs.
the rest of my chars i either don't play enough to know what's best yet or they're barely into the game and so don't really have a great skill selection.

golly. I have 15 different templates on my ranger alone--and I use them all, depending on the mission and/or quest and/or explorable area.
For just questing and goofing, I like my pet/condition builds; for some missions I go heavy on interrupts; for others I have ineptitude or ebon dust.
It all depends on the enemy, and how useful a particular skill set will be.
The same holds for my other characters. I have a rit, and the build changes depending entirely on the needs of the party, in this case: am I the 2nd monk? or a spirit-spamming damage dealer? or a protector and disrupter, with shelter, union, dissonance, and weapon spells?
So, yeah, I change builds all the time. And I'm still learning!

I tweak my builds sometimes but I don't make huge changes time after time.
One thing that does annoy me about some people is that they ask to see your build and then ask you to change 3 or 4 skills. I sometimes will mention that a particular skill is useful for a specific mission but it's up to the player to choose the build.
And I won't change my smiting monk to be a healer just because someone needs a healer. I've got a healer monk but go fed up of being complained at when I couldn't heal some idiot who wouldn't let me regen.

I have about 50 perfectly tweaked paragon builds and i ALWAYS changed to counter everything th mission would bring me. Now I have a couple builds that are very effective in PvP that can counter a lot of build-types. So changing your build every mission can really help a PvP player.

But she *always* runs with her Dune Lizard, because that is part of her character. Alanora without a Dune Lizard is like Luke Skywalker without a light saber.
My necro is more flexible, although she only runs minions in *very* limited circumstances (as in Vizunah Square). She has about a half-dozen Curses based builds, and will swap them out depending on circumstances. If I'm killing Shiro, I bring a Spoil Victor build, for example; if targets tend to clump, I bring Spiteful Spirit.
Enjoy the game how you will.

PvE soloing, yes.
PvE max party in most missions, no.

I always play with the build I like more by profession. BUT, if I fail the mission, I change everything thinking in my fault and/or mission dangers, that way I normally have success the second time.
cosyfiep
yes,
some skill sets just dont work well in some areas.
taking a mm to a djinn area-----no bodies, hence no minions.
going up against margonites....I bring lightbringers gaze, no reason to have it when I am beating up on hekets.
my mesmers (as has been mentioned) seem to change the most. Some enemies just need some empathy while others need to be interupted.....and sometimes my me/r likes to play with her pet crab.....just depends on the ai. My illusionist/channeler seems to change her illusion skills alot as well, but not the rits ones.
my rit has changed the least...but with the updates I will have to go back and see whats changed (have 8 toons I regualarly play and she is not up yet).
my smiter seems to use the same smiting skills but changes his secondary skills aroound (necro) as the area fits (either blood or curses, he is not an effective mm).
my heros change as need be.......like my rangers go from interupters to trappers....my eles change from water to fire, etc....while my monks and warriors (includes sin, paragon, and dervish) dont change at all.

As some of the others in this post have said it truly depends upon the mission. In certian issions in Tyia some builds worked better than others and changing your build to make it a bit easier to do said mission is only smart. A couple missions that come to ind are on the Fire Islands. Most of the monsters are either resistant or imune to fire skills, so you will find players wanting a ranger with winter. Why winter, it causes all skills to be cold based no matter what their main attribute is. So a nuker can go in with his most powerful fire skills and still be effective in combat. I have on occasions changed my skillset to whatever the situation calls for. This gives you the chance to see what other skills can do and gives you something to fall back on if needed.

bart
hehe i don't switch at all. I run my w/mo with mending and everything and it gets me from start to finish for every mission.
Tide to Go
I dont...ss works for almost anything, anywhere
but I might get into it soon since now the save and load skill bar is in.

ValaOfTheFens
Sometimes. Its usually when I get stuck at a mission. Like now I'm experimenting with builds for Dzagonur Bastion. My 3 MM strategy did ok the last time but Olias got swarmed at the Eastern Bombard and MoW wasn't in the right place at the Eastern Bombard.
Coloneh
i change my Necro's and my ele's skills almost every time i enter a town
i dont change the skills on my dervish to often though.
I think it depends on the type of build.

Samuel Dravis
I usually have a 'core' build for all my characters, then switch it around a bit if necessary. Some chars, like my monk, have several 'core' builds which I switch to whenever they become useful. Healing/Active prot/bonding etc etc.
creelie
Most of my builds get little tweaks from time to time, especially if there's a strong theme in the area I'm about to face - Dasha Vestibule is where all the heroes put on mantra of flame and assorted interrupts, siege missions mean renew life instead of rebirth on HB monks, Shiro gets some wild blow action, that sort of thing. I have a specific monk template just for Abaddon. But most of the time I have a core of 5 or 6 skills that never leave my bar.
Katari
I always consider the upcoming area situations, and change my build accordingly.
