The game comes in 'chapters' similar to the way you read a book.

The title of the book could be called Guild Wars and chapter one would be titled Prophecies, chapter two, Factions, and chapter three, Nightfall.

You can buy any of the three chapters and play them stand-alone (much like you can buy a book and read any chapter you want). The games are all connected, so you can buy any of them at any time and move between them after completing certain quests.

I hope this helps,
Talen

They're all online, just each game has a different story and, in the case of Factions and Nightfall, exclusive skills, professions and other content.

There is no offline mode.

Check out the sticky at the top of the Q&A forum page. It explains the differences between the chapters. Each one has it's pros and cons.

You what? You'd prefer to do mathematics than play an online game?

I love it when people say Fractions all the time. It's Factions! F-a-c-t-i-o-n-s! Fractions are the most annoying concept ever devised in math (well, decimals too).
