R/Rt Brutal weapon build.
Master Ketsu
Recently Ive been trying to make a decent Ranger build revovling around brutal Weapon. So far the dps is pretty high, its capable of taking down squishies fairly fast.
Expertise: 10+1 ( 11 )
Marksmanship: 11+3+1 ( 15 )
Communing: ( 10 )
Armor: really any works, You may want to consider having half druids/half scouts.
Weapon:Vampiric Hornbow
Version 1)
[skill]Read the wind[/skill][skill]Brutal weapon[/skill][skill]Prepared shot[/skill][skill]Needling shot[/skill][skill]savage shot[/skill][skill]Whirling defense[/skill][skill]Favorable winds[/skill][skill]Resurrection signet[/skill]
Expertise: 8+1 (9)
Marksmanship: 12+3+1 (16)
Communing ( 10 )
Version 2)
[skill]Read the wind[/skill][skill]Brutal weapon[/skill][skill]Prepared shot[/skill][skill]Needling shot[/skill][skill]savage shot[/skill][skill]Whirling defense[/skill][skill]Forked Arrow[/skill][skill]Resurrection signet[/skill]
-Using version 2 you have to remember to fire off prepared shot when you can in order to maintain energy.
Prepared shot is needed for E management and damage. Ive tried using differant elites, but they pose the problem of having Energy problems due to brutal weapon. This way you can still have high marks.
The main damage combo is Prepared shot-needling shot-savage shot ( you are allowed to chain needling shot into savage shot immediatly )
-needling shot will do 53 damage. ( +5 from vamp )
It just feels like its missing something, so anyone who has any real suggestions other then "ZOMG YOU SUX" Id like to hear them

Hmm...I'm not sure I see how this is advantageous over Glass Arrows with a higher investment in Expertise. There might be a few more points in damage with normal arrows, but you would have to spend less time recasting your buffs and higher expertise could allow you to use attack skills more frequently which would increase your dps overall. Also, you could run 16 marks instead of 15, which while not being an incredible difference, will add up over time.
Also, Favorable Winds with Read the Wind is a bit redundant, especially since you are a single ranger shooting one arrow at a time. Odds are that your enemy will likely gain more benefit from Fav Winds than you will unless you specifically design your team to accomadate it or if you run a barrage build (where multiple arrows will gain the benefit each shot).
With respect to the current setup, I would suggest you lower expertise to 9 and invest your extra attribute points in Marksmanship if possible since there is no break point for 5 or 10 energy skills between 9 and 11 expertise.

Lowered expertise to 9 and increased marks to 16, gets me more damage and energy from Prepared, so its a good change.

Maybe try forked arrow in there.

I actually tried that in random a while back in replacement to Favwinds. Got a gladpoint...You can do a psuedo spike with forked arrow-Needling shot-savage shot that seems to slap off 60% or more of their health ( 60 al ).
So far Im finding that you just really have to remember to fire off Prepared shot whenever you can. It will do a nice 75~115 damage ( with Brut and rtw up ) and it basically IS your energy.

I actually have yet to even be able to find the boss that has that elite in order to cap it. I went to the place that Wiki specified, dropped all my quests for that area and had no luck finding the boss.
Master Ketsu
I have a copy character called "master Ketsu P V P" Whom I use whenever I cant find an elite for pvp usage, ( or dont feel like traveling from whever the heck I am back to battle isles ) I havent found the elite in nightfall either, so Ive been testing this build in RA and Balthazars temple. I have no idea how this build would work in Pve.

try using nightmare weapon with dual shot, channel but it does a nice chunk of dmg.
at 16 it does 53 life steal+vampX2 with dual shot

For a ranger primary it's more like 10-ish in Channeling, but 3x 40-ish life stealing is a good alternative for less energy. The downside is the loss of regular attack damage, but then it doesn't blow when you happen to get enchanted.
Why the hornbow? Most of your damage comes from what is delivered along with the arrow (RtW, FW, BW) so I'd suggest delivering arrows as fast as possible and that would be with a flat or shortbow.

Agreed w/ Amy. Hornbows shine when you have an IAS involved, but otherwise you will generally get more dps with a bow that allows a greater base attack speed. When the bulk of your damage comes from buffs you use with your attacks, this becomes even more true and a flatbow/shortbow stands out a lot more. Personally I would reccomend a flatbow over a shortbow since you have Read the Winds unless you just find it particularly handy to be kept constantly close to your target.

Exit the Gate of Secrets into the Domain of Fear, turn Left and proceed WNW looking for a bridge. He's immediately on the other side with a few colleagues. I checked and he was still there this evening. I'm sure you know the area, but just in case be prepared for significant elemental damage.

And not just any IAS,
[card]Lightning Reflexes[/card]
isn't sufficient to mitigate the speed limitations of a hornbow because of its recharge time.

Since the update, this build is actually quite sweet.....

I've been using something similar to this, with Glass Arrows instead of Prepared Shot (I wasn't really having any energy problems and the damage bonus from GA is really nice) and using Dual Shot instead of Forked (this is really personal preference, I don't like the condition on Forked so I use Dual)
It's really nice, I got a glad point with it.

i made an awsome build with brutal weapon+glass arrows.
15 marks, 7 communing, 12 expertise, 8/9 wilderness
brutal weapon, glass arrows, forked arrow, savage shot, marauder's shot, whirling defense, dodge, troll unguent/res (if using res, take all out of wilderness and put in communing).
this build does something like +35 damage on all arrows, and when paired with marauder's shot ive seen damage upwards of 150. takes casters down FAST, however protective spirit is a big counter to this build.
