Professions (please help)
Triniton
I am new to the game and was wondering if you guys could help me pick a good profession. I'm looking for a good character for PvE. I've always liked classes that use a bow, so I was thinking about making a ranger but have no clue what would be a good second profession. The Dervish also looks like it is a powerful class, as does the Necromancer. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hi Triniton Welcome to GW
By all means start your GW experience with a Ranger.
I have played a Ranger in all three chapters, it is by far my favorite Profession.
One of the great things about this game is that you dont need to make a permanent decision about your second profession - you can change it later to whatever you want. In fact you will probably choose to change it repeatedly as you experiment with different builds and mixtures of skills.
However, at first you are stuck with the second profession you choose.
Once you reach a certain point in the game you will be able to change your second profession.
As for now - I usually suggest early level characters choose Monk as their second profession - it will help keep you alive as you learn the game.
As far as the other professions you mentioned - go ahead and make them all - many people play several characters at the same time - it helps keep the game fresh and also helps you learn different styles of play and the different skills for each profession you choose.
enjoy

If you really like bows, I can't think about a better option than a Ranger. About second profession, use whatever you want, you can change it later.
Also, you could start with whatever class and play 1 or 2 hours per class, and if you feel good with one in particular, play it.

I'd stay away from Dervish as a secondary, they are melee oriented, Rangers are ranged.

Thanks so much for the replies. I think I will go with a ranger with the monk secondary for now, can't wait to start playing :P

I'll give you +1 for being new you already know what PvE is.. You also have Prophecies and Nightfall...As far as secondaries Mo is great for skills such as Vigorous Spirit and Live Vicariously. Dervish's are good for their enchantment use which could come in handy in higher end PvE. Necro is meh IMO for Ranger secondary as they don't have much to offer.

As far as I know, rangers are attacking from a distance and Dervishes are more close combat...
I should not guess on that one :s
Take a 2th profession that attacks from a distance too...
And if you don't like it, change your 2th after a while...

Think of a 2nd profession as one to help make your primary profession become more effective, and not as one that serves to do damage by itself
Ex. A Ranger/Elementalist can use something such as conjure lightning along with a lightning damage weapon to add +15 damage to every arrow fired.
Ex. A Ranger/Elementalist should NOT use flare, firestorm, and meteor shower to try to deal damage on his own in between firing the bow, because he is a ranger and should depend on his primary profession to do the main bulk of his work (since he'll benefit from expertise).
If you want to run a Ranger/Monk, you can take some defensive monk skills such as mending touch to help yourself, but remember not to have 3 healing spells, 3 prot spells, and only 2 bow attacks.

Ranger is a great way to go. You could go monk for secondary to start, but honestly you could go pure ranger and do just fine. I actually would suggest going pure ranger first to gain some experience in using the skills a ranger has to offer. Troll Unguent is a great self healing skill, I consider it one of the best healing skills in the game, theres no need for a secondary imo when it comes to playing the ranger class.

Then what do you call an R/W Thumper with a hammer.Rangers can fight in melee as well like Dervs and Sins.I would suggest /Monk for secondary for rebirth it will be all you need.My Ranger started out as a R/N and no I don't play touch.
