Gotta Get Them Chests
Ouchie
I figured all people have some hobby so I gave my Character one too - Urgoz Warren
For any of you who have played Urgoz before you will understand many rooms are filled to the brim with pop-ups - some especially dangerous.
So at the begining of a run I say Please no rushing chests - everyone agrees
Then the first sign of a chest makes everyone go nuts - I'm targeting a chest - I'm using a chest
I'll usually ask that everyone let us clear the room first then get the chest - but several players have to rush in to get it right away.
Then every chest that spawns causes the same thing to happen.
I am confused by the behavior - the chest will still be there after clearing the room - everyone will get a chance to use it since there is no time limit - so why put the whole group in danger over 5-15 minutes waiting time?

Some player wants to be in the elite missions for only one thing.. chests and the drops that came with it. Usually peoples have their reason to rush after chests, in your case.. maybe it's greed that is telling your group to aggro as much as they can while going for the chests.
Gregslot
These "people" are animals.
Just like a dog wanting to get the ball, these people want to get the chest and they forget about everything else

Maybe their brain shuts parts of itself down, and they forgot, like you mentioned, that chests are not 1-time deals, everyone with a key gets something. They probably think they have to be the first one to the chest or else it will be emptied up!
Oh noes!!!
We should change the name of XXXXX chest to Unlimited filled XXXXX chest.

Greed. Thats all it is.
I went in a pug Barrage/Nuker team during the weekend event. We came across 4 chests. 1st chest was fine. 2nd chest a couple of people ran off in front... agroing a mob of Wolves who tore them a new 1. Third chest, the exact same thing happened. Fourth chest they'd ran out of keys so we were ok.
Until we reached the 2nd to last room... The 1 full of Wolves and Drinkers. Greed screwed us over big time. Having told every several times the monks/rit have NO reason to enter this room till its clear or the door shut... they start running around up front to collect there damn drops. At which point the doors shut. Then instead of standing in a corner... they run around all over the damn place... after we killed the first 2 Wolves mobs they've scattered that far they lure ANOTHER 3. Which spells our demise...

creatures near the chest affect the drops, maybe thats why they run up?

Another reason is they might think they need to get the chest in case the group gets wiped before they have a chance (which there is always that chance). It happens all over though, FoW, etc...
Malice Black
Greed rules with a mighty fist.

Greed is everwhere! You can't escape it, I bet you if you go .. "Oh that chest dropped me a gold Crystalline last time" watch how fast them sucker go running up to it, even if it's guarded by level 28+ mobs.

People are afraid that they might die before the chance to open a chest comes, especially in difficult areas like the elite zones.
I have seen more perfectly functional PUGS come to a disasterous end because of a chest.
People who are really experienced with an area and have confidence with their team will not display this behavior, which is usually a friend group or a guild group. There is not the fear that if someone dies that they will not be res'd or if they die with a drop that someone will wait for it to become available and be stolen.
Shadow's Requiem- what are you talking about? Cretures in proximity don't have any bearing on the contents of the chest. Not in as much as whether the creatures are alive or dead. The only bearing that you seen on the chests are the zone they are in, such as the jade sea and echovald forest dropping their jade swords and guardians of the hunt for outcasts and wardens. That doesn't have anything to do with their state of being, just general location.

People are greedy and dumb. Very ancient news imo.

Agreed - its fear that group will fail and that they would loose chance for opening chest. which is really stupid because by running to chest headlessly, they are ensuring failure.
Chest loot has quite complex rules, and only considering location is wrong
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Chest :
For example, Darkstone Chests in Ring of Fire area display these properties:
* Chests in Ring of Fire (Mission) and Abaddon's Mouth (Mission) drop Mursaat related loot.
* Chests in Hell's Precipice (Mission) contain Titan related loot (i.e. Magmas Shield), but one spawned nearby Portal Wraiths contains Undead related loot like Sephis Axe
* when Final Blow quest is active chests spawned in Perdition Rock nearby White Mantle forces drop mantle related loot.
