Guild Wars Special Events / Festivals: Fun or Profit?

Heres a question i ask.

What are your intentions during special events?

Fun or Profit?

Me? I want to do both. Have some fun questing and goofing around, at the same time, take a little bit of time to sell whatever is required for new items to other players.

Some players see special events are great opportunities to make lots and lots of money, and a lot of them certainly do.

But another question i ask is;

What do you think is the impact of purely capitalistic players have on the rest of the players during special events?

Put the peanut in the peanut hole!

Special Events for me is just for me to enjoy the game more.
I mean, as i'm not a big pvp fan, and there is just so much you can do PvE wise, things can get a little boring.
Events justs gives me another unique way to enjoy the game more. ^^

I think most people have the same thought as me.
But of course there are just people that are there for the "items" where they can sell on later to make some profit. (this event: mini pigs, firecrackers, etc.)

well, to me those events are only about fun. I have enouth other things to sell, and festivals are mostly about fun and items. i dont really care about the money cuz i got most of the things i want, and i have other ways to make money, so its mostly to play the quests/challenges and get items like transf tonics, and stuff like this.

most the capitalistic playres are forgetting the fun of the game, at a certain point allk they see is $$$, but since im not one of them i wont judge them, dioffrent people have fun in diffrent ways. to some its gold in storage and 100 sets of FOW, to some its more about having fun with friends and stuff (normal pve)

Just about fun!

Capitalistic players?
In my opinion, they are a minor annoyance, spoiling a bit of the fun, but as long as they are not raging about "Anet endangering their profits" I don't care about them.

In the case of the Canthan event, there are some gamers who don't have Factions. So you can take some advantage of this. I sold a mini pig for an ecto. Then I sold another for 5.9k. I find that alright but I wouldn't want things to be sold for more than 20k. It would be cool if Anet monitored this sort of thing and if prices are too high, then release more and more of the product into the market.

(For once, I will not start a flame war in this topic, believe it or not.)

I'm capitalistic, but I don't sell the items, because I'm lazy and greedy. And because I have too much money in a game where money is unnecessary.

Its all about the hats. I think thats the only reason I showed up for the event today. I use to do the festival quests for fun but I haven't done a festival quest since the first boardwalk event with dragon masks... forget the name.

The mini games are a nice touch too. Did a couple rollerbeatle runs but the problem is the rubberbanding is ****ing ridiculous and kind of took the fun out of it for me... if they fixed rubberbanding, rollerbeatle would of definitely been a lot of fun though...

For fun, all the way. Besides, I'm a packrat, so although I will try to rack up on as much festive items as possible, it's all for saving and not selling.

My wife and I decided to join forces and try to acquire drunkard and sweet tooth titles with holiday items alone. So, to better our chances at either title, I decided to get the Sweet Tooth title, while she is going for Drunkard. Plus, I love transforming into random candy corn or elves, shooting fireworks, dropping snowmen, and popping out ghosts in boxes randomly. The pig mini is just an awesome little gift, and I've got a few friends who couldn't make the finale, so I'll probably be giving them my extras.

I actually kinda feel sorry for those who attend these events with the sole reason to make a few virtual bucks. Do they affect me? No way, not even a little. I mean, to each their own. Just glad I at least know how to have fun.

I want to have fun at the special events. It's what they're designed for. And I think that that's what some people forgot for this event. The first few hours, the pig drops were huge from the fortunes, but that was an error and anet fixed it, and now it's almost impossible to get them. So those that had them saw it as a huge profit on their part. Then came the celestial pig, who gave out the pigs for free. And there was a huge outcry from those who had spent money on/were earning money from these pigs. Those that spent hours building up fortunes and didn't get a pig, those that just wanted a pig to have a pig, were very pleased by the giveaway by the Celestial.

Sure, I horde all the event items in case they some day may be able to be sold for a bit more, but mostly the events are there to have fun, and to earn those titles that you may not have yet (drunkard, sweet tooth and gamer I am referring to here).

Fun fun fun ...with maybe a little cash involved *coughcough*

What i'm trying to save for a naga raincaller o_o;;

anyway, I like the events for just fun. It was hard to not just rollerbeetle the whole day away xD definitely took time away from my mapping of Elona.

But a little cash on the side isn't so bad...but it's not my sole purpose, just a bonus

(I still regret not selling/trading my extra pig sooner >_> gave it away in the end though ^-^)

The quests were unique and the minigame was the best ever made.
And that's where the fun is limited.

Otherwise, i just tell the main token items for cash. Foolish people wasting their money, might as well take advantage, no? There's a lot of money out in GW and I'm there to grab me some. I can only get hge wads of cash like this from these type of events.

Made like 50k this weekend.

I start out the event trying to make money, but I get sucked into the mini games too easily so I usually end up in it for the fun. Which is fine by me, I can just go farm ecto if I want profit :S

It was fun, changing districts real fast to get extra items . Got 4 piggies doing that. For me it was more fun and maybe i'll turn two of those piggies into bacon....

I made a !@#$ load out of the tokens for the event, do I see it as bad? No!

It was back when everyone thought they were worth something, most times 100g each, and I knew a easy way to get them quickly.

So I farmed them and made alil profit. But I only asked for the sale price of 25k for a stack,

The easiest way to get money this weekend was to:

1)Create new character in factions
2)Get 50g to open storage
3)Take out 10 glittering dust out
4)Take the quest where the storage agents was.(forgot the name of quest)
5)Run outside, give 10 dust, run back inside
6)Get reward 25 tokens and some other things
7)Sell tokens fast and cheap 80-90gold each
8)drop items in storage, delete character and repeat

That takes about 2-4 minutes

I played through all of the quests, rolled some beetles, opened a few fortunes... basically partook of every aspect of the special event weekend. Then I made some money selling what I wasn't going to be using afterwards.

So to answer the question - I do both, but I put fun in front of profit.

No there is a quicker and cheaper way.
skip step 2), revamp step3) and wait till u have 250 tokens before selling.

The events are more about fun for me. And the in-game alcohol.

Although this weekend's event has been good for my finances too. Made a good 15k or so while hunting for ingredients (the most I've ever made in a weekend so I'm very proud of myself). Haven't sold any tokens or fortunes to anyone - and I'm definitely not letting go of my mini pigs (although I did give one of them to a friend who hadn't got one yet) :P

I participate events for fun, mainly. I may try to gain some profit if I see an opportunity but I'm sure as hell won't complain if I don't get anything/lose something because of it.

I'm a casual player, you see. I don't farm (unless you count playing with 7 hench/heroes and clearing one map for loots, opening chests along the way as "farm"), I don't do chest runs or UW/Griffon/Troll solos. And because I try to play all the classes (as primary class characters) and skills are expensive, I'll need all the money I can find. That's why I usually don't waste my money on something as trivial as Lunar Tokens or Armbrace of Truths (IF I ever get rich enough to even consider one, that is).

I made 90k during this event, selling tokens. It may sound like nothing to some of you, but 90k for me = 1 full ascended (15k) armor for one of my chars and then some plats for skills. And I did it without any stress, too.

All in all, I have fun and also made some profits. I couldn't be happier.

Honestly, I wanna have fun. Let's be honest, profit in this context isn't going to improve my life. On the other hand, I want goodies too.

I guess, I don't so much try for profit, as profit might find me. Might.

I kinda wonder if I should have sold more tokens myself; I ended up with over 700 by the end of things. Traded them all in over Friday night and Sat morning trying to get a pig for my hubby. Which he got anyway by being in a good district, so...

I personally play for fun, and I don't see the harm in some profit. The impact as I see it is two things. One, players trying to go out of their way to get lots of stuff just to make money have the potential to make it harder for other people to get stuff. That wasn't so much an issue here, but picture it in some of the present grabs around Wintersday. Two, sometimes these events bring out people's inner scammer. Who didn't see someone today trying to sell a mini-pig for 25k, when we all knew full well we'd have a good chance every 3 hours? :P

So I think the impact is small when it's the honest players who are just looking for ways to make money (selling tokens is a great honest way to make money, and people know how to get them, some of them are just looking for a quicker way to get the items). It's those not so nice people that worry me.

I usually first have fun, exploring everything and stuff, and afterwards, I am PLANNING to get lots of items to sell for later, but never sold 1 event item (Except some Peppermint Candy Canes for 1K each).

I'm now more of a collector of the event items, I have everything, from Squash Serum to Fireworks, stored on my ritualist ^^

Nothing wrong with "capitalistic" players. It's just the ones that are disruptive that are irritating.

The first few hours of the event I was running characters through trying to get a mini-pig - you needed 10 glittering dust for one quest. Not something I - or obviously many others - keep in storage. I noticed their price jumped up into the 250g per 10, if I had some I would have sold them off. Any way, I've got enough plat in storage so it's no big deal to buy most things I want so I just purchased them. About an hour after they went up they suddenly disappeared and did so as fast as you could sell them into the trader (much as many runes do right after the release of a new chapter) and in several districts one would notice 5-10 people with the same guild tag hanging around the trader (and one or two spamming local with outrageous prices for dust) - I assume they were trying to dry up the market. It seemed to go on for about an hour or two, the people left, and the trader was suddenly full of them. I guess dust just drops too much for any group to corner the market on it, my guess is that they lost quite a bit of gold as prices only went down from that point on and it doesn't bother me one bit.

The same thing happens for a while on runes after a release - I've even been whispered in anger about "ruining" a good thing by selling to the trader or at what the traders prices would have been.

But then, that isn't "capitalistic" nor any other economic system - that is pure disruption and gaming a system. But, I know of no online game where this doesn't happen and I know of no real way to stop it without really potentially really damaging the economy - significantly under priced is as disruptive as massive inflation.

Fun, mostly. Though I did rake in some serious cash.

However, I'm not nearly evil enough to be one of those people hanging around before the pig comes trying to sell smoking remains and guardian moss for 50k-100k.

I like to have fun and make some in game money for new armors and what not. But my prices when I do sell event items tend to be really low so I make money and other save alot of gold also. ex. 250 Wintergreen Candy Canes for 50k or less.

The fun of events should come from profit. But since the event items aren't worth enough, it doesn't. It's better to farm Ectos the for the whole event as opposed to worry about getting event items, which if needed be can be bought at a much higher rate via Ecto sales revenue than they would be acquired via personal collecting.

What I'm saying is: the events should start offering more profitable items, or at least items that can make the characters attending significantly better off after the event. That would be fun.

I do know I had 1250 dust before the event and now I dont have it anymore. Furthermore, somehow I ended up with 100 red dyes.

GW material market works the same as a stock market :P

Oh, I opened about 300 fortunes, NO pig at all. So I stopped believing in fortune and started writing my own destiny.

Anyway: capitalism is all about risks and oppurtunities, balance them out rightly ull earn money. Otherwise it more likely costs u money. For example the people buying pigs in the hope they will be valuable in the future. Or the people that didnt want to sell the pigs on saturday yet and found out on sunday everyone got a personal pigfarm.

I just recently saw someone in the top 100 of Rollerbeetle racing charging 50k for services and tips in getting into the top 100.

This happens with alot of events. you always have the right to choose whether you want to enjoy it, or spend your time profiting off of it. Both have different oucomes.

I went for fun. I gave away ingredients. Kept explaining to people that it was a group effort; that no one person needed everything. Had a great time. Ended up with 6 pigs; three for myself and guildmates and three to give away.

Profit, well I sold 3k worth of spiked eggnog when someone spammed for it. And was going to give away 2 Tonics to someone who wanted to join the Elf line dance, but he insisted on paying 200g for them. Farming for truffles and archaic kappa shell netted me about 7k also with drops.

Had a great time overall, made money without trying for it.

I love the special events for two main reasons: (1) They are a lot of fun (especially for people like me that are mainly PvE players); (2) The event items are cool (especially hats and things like mini pigs) because I like to collect them as "souvenirs" to remind me of all the hours I spent during each event.

I will always end up selling/trading a few things to help my gold situation... but that's not because I end up with 1000k in the bank... it's more because I end up with 0k in the bank towards the end of every event and need to sell off some stuff to help out with my usual gaming time.

I've enjoyed all the special events a lot! Thanks ANET!

I don't see why it has to be an either-or thing. I spent most of the event beetle racing for essentially no reward, just because it was fun. I also spent about an hour farming the quests for tokens to the tune of about 40k. Part of the fun in these events is the unique moneymaking opportunity they present, but it's not like you can't enjoy the event itself at the same time.

This event was FAR funner than most of ANets previous events, simply because we as a guild chose to go farm everything for the feast many times over. We had a great time getting ingrdients and by the midnight pst showing last night had folks chanting about putting up statues in our honor... lol (a bit much if you ask me). We picked the same district (AD88) each time and a lot of folks kept coming back, but many non-pig-owners came also. Everyone left with pigs every time. That alone made the day for us more fun.
