Too many people? Bandwidth needing expansion?

Today at the time that this thread was posted, there was close to 700 users on GWG. Around 250 of which were registered users and the rest were all guests. Now talk about a SLOW DOWN!! Yikes, this is the slowest i have ever seen GWG take to open links as i surf around.

I am wondering if it truelly is a bandwidth issue, becuase i know for a fact it isnt a clientside issure on my part. With SO many guests logging in, it seems that everyone suffers the slowdowns.

Has GWG outgrown their current server? Perhaps it is time to find more bandwidth? I for one say it is a good idea for GWG to start looking at such a possibility. Just wondering if anyone else is seeing this at all. Yes, when there are only 300-400 users, load times are fast and managable.

or just tell me to stop smoking crack!??! (lol, done worry i dont)

EDIT:: Btw, it took me 7 tries to get this thing to finally post. Each wait time was over 2 minutes. Hmmm...

Yeah, the lag is pretty bad right now. I think it would be faster to travel to where the server is, copy the file I want directly, then return home and view it. They should just disallow guests during peak traffic hours. Problem solved. Although I guess that would be rude/unfair to the guests.

go back to the post on the DDOS attack we are having which will answer your questions.

we can handle 700 easy under normal conditions

It's not bandwidth. It's not too many people. It's the server load, more specifically it's the MySQL requests. It doesn't look like another DDOS attack when I view the load, but right now I'm leaning toward something was seriously screwed up on the server because of the recent attacks. We are on it, and I know how inconvienent it is for everyone. I'm truly sorry. There is some good news in the near future, a new dedicated server. But it's still a couple of weeks away. I promise when I have more information I will update the community.

(And as Loviatar pointed out, I have seen this site easily handle 700+ concurrent users in the forums and 200+ in the auctions. Which is why I can't understand where the server load is exactly coming from.)

The DDOS thread is in Riverside Inn (I'm not about to argue with Inde on where threads should go, I like modding Q&A.)

One way to test the load is to make it where only registered users who are logged in can view. Maybe try it for an hour or two so you can rule out the many 'guests' on the board.

I was thinking of this too. Restrict "guest" usage. Or...(this one will tick off a few people) Allow unlimited usage with a fee for regular members. I would pay a annual fee.

no dos attacks today, something else on the server causing load, I'm trying to figure it out, its tough with the holiday season, lots of people are off or busy, I hope you all understand and bear with us, next year will be an even better year so we're going into high gear and getting GWGuru its own server, just as powerful as the one right now:
Dual Index Xeon 3.0GHz/2MB Cache, 800MHz FSB Processors
4GB DDR2 400MHz RAM
2x 73GB 10K RPM Ultra 320 SCSI Hard Drive

kewl. well, today no issues. Sounds like it truely was a server side issue. Dont get me wrong i wasnt complaining, just trying to get a bit of info.

And now i am greatly satisfied, ty mods for the informative responses. Well, if we are able to eventually get that dedicated server, that will be Suweeeet.
Thanks again for the info.

Today? Well today was the last straw for me...I understand the Admins are working overtime to rectify these problems...but TODAY was horrible...

I was a cussin' fool TODAY...

For the moment though...it seems to be running smoother...

Today I have been having a shit load of problems. I'm waiting two minutes for the off-topic page to load and when I go into a thread I get a page could not be displayed. Never had this problem before unless something was wrong with my comp. Well I hope you fix it soon.

ok things seem to have been running smoothly for 6 hours so far, we've just been having abnormal load today and yesterday, we hope we've found the root of the problems and fixed it. And it all seems to be running fine with the auction system going.

Kzap...

I would seriously consider putting a limit on guest users. Seems there are always more guest users then members...hence the big load on the server.

I'll say that's crazy, especially after he said everything's running fine and they found the cause. That implies something unusual happened to some code that was put in place, and that the users were not really the cause of anything excessive.

only takes a few mins to create an account...

I thought so Malice Black...however, seems Kzap doesn't agree. I will be watching when this new stand alone server is up and running and see if there are anymore mega-lags. If so I will put this suggestion back on the table.

I also suggested a VIP membership...one with a small fee to allow those that pay for this to get X amount of bandwidth and maybe extra storage space. Or even make it that you can't upload any pics over X amount unless you pay a small fee first.

I have heard nothing back on that idea though...

Even Final Fantasy XI was hit with this for a time. They had to keep turning off the auction house and search system (essiential for party groupings) to keep the server from crashing.

I thought the lag was due to popularity of the new auction system till I read this.

Lag has been horrible for me as well, and I know for a fact it has not been my isp or connection. It all began with the auction systems being implemented, ever since then, I have frequent pages that will not load and a very long load time on pages that do. I never had a single problem with guru till the auction system was set up.

I know you guys are doing the best you can, just my 2 cents.

The site has had problems before this. We used to only be able to sustain 500 users on the forums before the site would go down. With a few improvements it can now go 750+. With more features comes more requests on the databases. That would be why we are getting a new server here shortly. We can't remain stagnant with no content, no new features. We have even more features planned that will hit databases (more on that later). It won't be long now before we have a nice new server that will allow us to grow and expand even further.

I noticed you dropped the member names that are online in the actual forums. I take it this is to relieve the server some? Inde....you still should consider limiting the guest users amount of online time here. Even after you install the new server. This will help with the loads and it will force people to register.

Also since no one has answered my latest question in the Avatars Missing thread....will the new server bring back my Avatar?

up to +750 has been shattered for sometime now... > Just a heads up <

For this Free For All PvP Weekend, each day i have seen over 1200 people on GwG. At the time of this post over 800 Guests and just under 400 Members!! Lopsided? Yes. Unavoidable? No. Another server increase? Maybe?

However, i am gonna assume that after the Free for All Weekend, the traffic will significantly slow down... enjoy!
