hey,

I bought prophecies a few days a go and I want to start an SS necro using this build:

Curses: 16 (12+3+1)
Inspiration : 10
Soul reaping: 9 (8+1)

[skill]arcane echo[/skill] [skill]spiteful spirit[/skill] [skill]reckless haste[/skill] [skill]parasitic bond[/skill] [skill]Desecrate enchantments[/skill] [skill]power drain[/skill] [skill]ether feast[/skill] Rez

(found this one on this forum somewere)

My questions:

1. Is this a decent build?

2. Should I start in factions or in prophecies?

3. The targets for SS, is it only really usefull on melee foes? or usefull on eles and monks to? etc. etc. etc. =P

4. Is this a useable build for gvg ? Or should I bring more support skills? Like Inspired hex?

Factions for the quick level up, unless you want to for for the full Prophecies experience (long time to level up).

You'll want to grab the Factions twin to Desecrate in Defile Enchantments, also grab Reckless Haste with in Cantha.

You'll be taking a boat to Tyria though to grab SS, I'm sure you know.

Wouldn't bother with Ether Feast misself, be a good sport, put some spare points into Blood and Rit your monks.

GG!

Decent build, although Ether Feast is a really bad self heal, because it is so slow to cast.

Many SSers bring Blood Ritual to help the other casters in your party with energy recovery.

If I start in factions, what skill should I take instead of SS?

And do you think energy will be ok?

I did similar to what you want to do - though I didn't go mesmer secondary.
I started in Cantha and as soon as I could I got the boat to Lions Arch.
I ran myself back to Beacons and then got a runner down to the Forge - I could then cap SS at my own leisure. SS was the first Elite I capped for my necro
Energy isn't a problem with Soul Reaping and things dying

Greets. Cross 1) This is an alright build. So, yes its decent (I don't like arcane echo with SS+reckless haste though)

2) I'm a fan of Prophecies over Factions. Fast leveling - Factions; Enriched Story and a nice slow pace (to get used to a Necro/Mesmer) - Prophecies; more rewarding quests - Prophecies

3) SS works against anyone using skills or attacks. So it is good against spellcasters and ranged attackers

4) I don't PvP let alone GvG, so I can't give any comments.

I wouldn't bother using any other Mesmer skills except for Arcane Echo.

Here's what my SS usually runs but a few skills change depending on where I use it.

[skill]arcane echo[/skill] [skill]spiteful spirit[/skill] [skill]reckless haste[/skill] [skill]Price of Failure[/skill] [skill]Enfeebling Blood[/skill] [skill]Awaken the Blood[/skill] [skill]Blood Ritual[/skill] [skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

You usually want to target melee foes and rangers and don't cast SS on a slow caster.

I am a fan of [skill]Life Siphon[/skill] though, 2 second recharge for +3 health degen/regen = not too bad self heal, especially if thrown onto anything with over 50% health

Always the "If you got an SS build you gotta bring Blood Ritual" comments.
Sick of it.

SS Build I use by favor.

Skills

[skill]Arcane Echo[/skill][skill]Spiteful Spirit[/skill][skill]Reckless Haste[/skill][skill]Desecrate Enchantments[/skill][skill]Insidious Parasite[/skill][skill]Spirit of Failure[/skill][skill]Power Drain[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

Attributes

Handy to keep up your energy stacking Spirit of Failure on a target combined with Reckless Haste without targetting it with either SS or Insidious Parasite.
Power Drain is there to prevent eles from casting spells and meanwhile getting a blast of energy back.

This is after all my own input so if people have another view on this feel free to do so.

I would drop those inspiration skills for spinal shivers or blood ritual and auspicious incantation. use it on the echoed version of SS. it brings you back up to around 1/2 energy.

Any good monk should not have any major energy problems under normal circumstances. Though you may want to ask your monks if they want you to bring Blood Ritual just in case something goes wrong (such as too much agro).

Am I reading it right? You sometimes use Spirit of Failure and Insidious Parasite on the same target? I don't understand that since Insidious Parasite requires the target to actually hit.

If you want additional damage, you could try working in Backfire and/or Empathy into the build for areas that have larger groups with minimal hex removal. In this case you would shift the points in Inspiration to Domination.

No I said to stack it with Reckless Haste WITHOUT hitting it with either SS or IP

For PVE
This is an ok build but you can easily get overwhelmed. Its mainly useful for melee attacking enemies. If you've never played before, start in prophecies. Your biggest issues will be energy here. Get armor and gear that ups your energy. If you plan on encountering lots of enemies channeling is good. Using minions is the easier way through pve and you can get further on your own this way.
For PVP
Most people are stupid and set their casters to attack inbetween spells so it is effective against them as well as warriors etc. Again armor and items with energy+. Channeling is not ok here.

As for health between inspiration and hexes there really isnt a strong self healing spell but if you need 100+ health that you'd get from ether feast, chances are by the time you cast it you'll be dead. This is why ether feast isnt used. Soul reaping isn't really all that helpful in pvp. Put the points into blood magic and stick unholy feast vamp gaze or life syphon

Sorry no fancy pictures. My first character about a year and half ago was ss and i was working from a similar build.

The build you have is decent, though the mesmer skills are kind of useles (Except arcane echo, that is).

I have three different SS setups that I usually use, depending on what I'm doing and who I'm playing with. (All of them are N/Me)

When doing PvE with a party that needs BR:
Curses: 16 (12+3+1)
Blood: 12 (11+1)
Soul Reaping: 5 (4+1)

Spiteful Spirit
Arcane Echo
Blood Ritual
Mark of Pain
Desecrate Enchantments
Parasitic Bond
Shadow Strike
Res Sig (Or Sunspear sig if you have it)

This is a very basic PvE build that can work for pretty much any mission. Very good damage when using the Arcane Echo/SS combo and can get a warrior to strike an enemy with Mark of Pain. Parasitic bond is just an easy hex to cast for healths sake.

When doing PvE in a group that doesn't need BR:
Curses: 16 (12+3+1)
Inspiration Magic: 11
Soul Reaping: 5 (4+1)

Spiteful Spirit
Arcane Echo
Ether Signet
Mark of Pain
Desecrate Enchantments
Parasitic Bond
Leech Signet/Drain Enchantment
Res sig

Feel free to spam all your skills with this build, then use ether sig (providing your mana is at the right amount), then go back to using your skills. Same basic damaging conceppt as the other SS build.

When doing 2 man Under World run:
(Same stats as SS build with BR)

Spiteful Spirit
Arcane Echo
Reckless Haste
Awaken the Blood
Desecrate Enchantments
Defile Enchantments
Shadow Strike
Res sig

Do in this order: awaken the blood, arcane echo, spiteful spirit (x2), Reckless haste. Then throw in both desecrate and defile enchantments for some added damage. Then you repeat this process with the next group. Use shadow strike against the shadows to kill them quickly.

(You must forgive me, for I have no clue how to post the skill pictures and descriptions l )

SS Build I use.

Skills

[skill]Arcane Echo[/skill][skill]Spiteful Spirit[/skill][skill]Enfeebling Touch[/skill][skill]Desecrate Enchantments[/skill][skill]Defile Enchantments[/skill][skill]Spinal Shivers[/skill][skill]Empathy[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

I've used this build since a few months after Factions was released and it's worked great for me. Enfeebling Touch is for any melee enemy bugging you, the combo Defile/Desecrate gives really good AoE damage without too much energy expenditure.

Example to post skill pictures(omit the dashes):
[-skill]Spiteful Spirit[/skill-]
This allows you to post Spiteful Spirit with the picture and description.
