Lag, Server Performance and Living in Asia
pindun
Hi All,
I'd like to hear from people living in Asia who have testing connecting to different regional servers. I recently moved to Japan but am still using the USA servers. My good ping times are 200-300 ms. Sometimes they are much worse. I don't know what they were when I lived in USA, but my feeling from playing fast casting characters like prot monk is that I am a lot slower now.
Of course there could be a number of reasons for this and I am about to start a project to work out what is the highest performance method of connecting to GW. But I thought I'd ask here first.
1.) Has anybody compared performance of Asian and USA servers from Asia? (I know Aussies start on the USA servers and I couldn't find a lot of complaints from them so I am thinking there might not be much in it)
2.) Can anybody give me an IP address of an Asia based GW server so I can run some ping tests over time?
3.) Does anybody know if there are performance benefits to having a whole team playing from the same server?
4.) Can anybody tell me what server other Asian country players start from? (Especially English capable countries like Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia etc.)
My ultimate goal is to establish an English speaking Asia time zone based guild with the best setup for high performance GvG. I want to make sure I pick the optimal server to start with.
I'll be using PingPlotter to measure ping times to different servers (GW and otherwise). Any other advice for ways to help me decide would be much appreciated.
cheers,
pin

Wierd. I'm in America, on good cable, and you guys have better pings than me to the American server. Usually run 250-400 here.

The server routes players based on MS Windows Regional Settings. So if you set your regions and languages settings to the location you want, GW will automatically route you to corresponding game server, and you will get better ping and performance.

Who told you that Australians start on American servers? O_o;; Every single Aussie player I've met, including myself, started on European.
My ping when starting from European districts is on average 300-600, orange circle or red circle. When starting from International districts, my ping is 200-500, green or orange circle.

I mean, there's at least one much more reliable way to choose which server to connect to: IP of origin. Pinging multiple servers and choosing the first reply wouldn't be a bad option either.
Anyone from ANet can confirm what the parent said? I'm in Brazil, but most of the time I'll have my regional settings configured to Japan or USA. My ping usually ranges from 300 to 600 (excluding the 30k rubberband pings, but I disgress), which I'd say is good enough for oversea servers.

singapore here. avg ping is about 200 -300+
