If you have an account that keeps your characters and what not, how can people sell used copies of the game to other people, like on amazon?

It is against ArenaNet EULA to resell a registered game. Anyone found selling, buying or transferring ownership in any way by ArenaNet will have the account permanently banned.

The buyer is usually getting scammed as at any point the original owner can report the hacking of his account to ArenaNet and get the game back.

Besides that its probably someone trying to scam you.

Like me for example, i have 2 accounts, i bought the second one before there were Character slots in the online store, so i used them as mules, now that there are slots in store i dont use need a second account for mules anymore ( luckily for me i have a friend that also likes Guildwars and he plays it with me on my second account)

In this example lets say i didn't have that friend and i was looking to get some profit out of getting rid of my second account, so i could sell it in real life ( not allowed by eula) or i could sell it in game (not allowed by eula) and get some in game gold that way ,maybe none of my friends like Guildwars or something, in any case selling in real life isnt working, so i sell it in game and get some in game gold , im happy and the buyer is happy.

This is of course, if it was allowed by the eula and if i ( as the seller) wasnt trying to scam you.Its also what the sellers are trying to make you believe,if you ask them why they are selling theyr account for in game cash, meaning they have no account to use the gold on, theyll say they have a second account.

@Coloneh - If it was never registered then it is not a used game and can be legally resold or gifted to someone. Used is when the game has been registered with ArenaNet and an account created. Once the access key has been tied to an account, ownership cannot be transferred.

The buyer has no way of determining the honesty of the seller. In most cases, it is a scam attempt and the buyer will lose his money or in-game gold and the account also. And if you are buying it as a second account, you can actually have all your accounts perma banned.

ArenaNet does not fool around with this. Buying or selling, they will punish you. We see a lot of complaint posts on these forums about the results of buying used games.
