anet wants everyone to be a PvPer
morimoto
i believe that anet would prefer if the entire community was into PvP.
most of the propaganda that comes from them is pro PvP. most skill balances are because of PvP. PvE access is sometimes controlled by PvP.
i am sure if you think for a few minutes you will find other evidence to support this claim.
what i am wondering is why do they want to turn us into PvPers? maybe it is somehow cheaper for them in the long run and allows them to make more money.

Make sure you have your flame retardant suit on...
I'd PvP if I had the time, but I don't so I PvE. End of story.

They truly want both... but balancing PvP is far more difficult therefore gets the greater attention, as it should.
This from one who most rarely PvPs.

Guild Wars is a PvP oriented game. If you look at how prophecies PvE works it is practically holding your hand and teaching you some PvP basics through the missions. People that bitch and moan about the lackluster PvE in GW are never going to be satisfied because it is a PvP game first. If you truly enjoy killing purple dragons or whatever all day to level up then this isnt the game for you.
Saphatorael
PvP is the endgame, basically... though the PvE community has gotten some extra endgame content over time (Sorrow's Furnace, Ruined Tombs, Elite Missions), PvP is still a bit more prominent in the GUILD WARS (read it again... GvG anyone?) universe, and it always will be.
Besides, ANet tries to change the metagame by toning down the commonly used skills and buffing the underused (if it's underused, it's usually weak anyways), whereas PvE'ers will (nearly always have the same opponents in the same areas, which can be beaten with the same tactics over and over again...)
And how can you complain about too much PvP events if you've just had the Canthan New Year and Gamer Weekend?

read the factions guide book

In my opinion this is more of a PVE game than it is a PVP game. For instance in PVE you can kill all kinds of differant mobs. Get armor and weapon skins(unless bought) that a PVP only character cannot get. You can open chests. Do missions. Explore. Gaming events and Holiday events. Only 2 areas are controlled by PVP. Canthan Elite missions are not PVP only, but is faction farming. Which can be done via PVP or PVE. Sure the skill changes are based mostly on PVP, but PVP also has championships where real world cash is given out. Sure HOH has a few items from the chests that PVE can not get. But PVE gets more perks than PVP only characters will see for a long time to come.

So using a "flavor of the week" (possibly longer until nerf) pvp build isn't like killing purple dragons, it's like killing kiting, energy denying, spike dam dragons, for what, fame, right?

Ghostly hero mini in Hall of the Heroes chest?
It's all happening. A.Net wants everyone to be a pvper.

I used to PvP and enjoyed holding HA from time to time, but honestly I got tired of the lack of creative builds and creative counters and went back to PvE because of it. Now that I have come back to PvE only, I am convinced by the evidince that PvP kills the creative aspect of the game.

Remember one thing in this thread... PvP was the original goal as the end game for Guild Wars and the PvE campaigns were only meant to be a quick way of unlocking skills and learning the game system so you could PvP effectively
GloryFox
Yes you are correct that's why PvP only character creation was created after the game release.
Sheesh PvP is a way for people to enjoy fighting against one another and keep playable options open. It's one option among many.. an option I am happy not to participate in unless its AB.

The game was *always* intended and designed as both a PvE and PvP experience. This was communicated in the earliest announcements about the game and continued as the goal throughout development. While there were phases of development where one or the other was focussed on, none of the assertions you present in your post are accurate. |

I'd play PvP if it doesn't have rank and it's all for fun. Too many idiots think they're better than you since they're rank 9 or 10 or whatever. Well, what does rank 9 or 10 done for you in real life.. nothing so GG!!
Just a game, PvP is too serious for my taste!

I can go and unlock all the skills I need for PvP with a few clicks now...
PvE skill unlocking is quite slow. ;-]>

Zehnchu - Problem with that is that There are interviews still up from chapter 1 times confirming the original idea was just as stated (They expected everyone to make a PvE character..go through the game..and end up in PvP).
This has since changed, not to long afterwards actually, but they cannot deny what was already said.

I agree entirely with Morimoto. Anet is forcing PVP on those who prefer roleplaying. Not only by attempting to build up pvp (and falling short) but by shaving off what little PVE excitement is left with simply bad nerfs and updates which are intended to level the playing field regardless of what build you are using. As a PVPer and former PVEr i find that the key factors that make this game great are creating builds, farming/in-game economics, and teamwork. A balance between these things would be ideal, no? Instead after a series of nerfs and "updates"- the economics and farming are nonexistent, any formidable and well thought out build is nerfed or rendered obsolete shortly thereafter, and we are left with only teamwork. With the current trends I fear pvp is next
However, as sure as I say this, I'll have some half-witted remark shot at me saying "well why don't you stop playing." I continue to play because, like many games in the past, Guild Wars has just come upon somewhat of a rut due to a series of misses on the updaters side. Diablo 2 was just plain lame for a while due to over nerfing and things picked back up after a few changes were made. The same has been true for several other games I've played. I've read some of the planned updates for tournament play and the future of pvp seems promising. The developers of Guild Wars are obviously capable of creating an extraordinary game and I have every confidence that things will get better.
