Is it in violation of any law/rule to make a reference to a TV show/DVD in your character name? Just curious.

Most likely it is. Most of the peeps that do this most likely haven't been reported, but this doesn't make it right. =\

I remember seeing someone get banned for naming a character after borat...

Hope not. One of my oldest characters derived her name from a TV show. She's rapidly approaching 2 years old and I have no desire to change her name.

Besides, there'd be a whole lot of people forced to change their character's name from "Legolas" to something else.

Purple Lingerie - :D

The names are copywrited by the script writers most likey. But most people don't even notice and do it any way.

Worse case is that Anet forces you to change the name so go for it.

In the end it depends on the name. Most names cannot be copyrighted.

ANet has some wording in the legal stuff about using copyright material but unless it can be legally proven to not exist anyplace but in a TV show, movie, or book, it's should be ok.

On the other hand, ANet is free to ban anything they want if they feel a name is in poor taste. It's their game and their server.

All of my characters (save one) are named after characters in books or other games. The most I've ever gotten was a comment from other players on how much they liked the game/book.
