Prepared Shot Build
LazyLink
So I was try to figure out a build which doesn't rely on degen to kill but still does a lot of damage without sacrificing too much defense and interrupt ability. Here's what I came up with. This build is made to be used in Alliance Battles, but you can just take out the condition removal and put in a resurrection ability and you'll have a PvE version of this build.
Distracting Shot (You can use any interrupt, but I prefer Distracting Shot)
Prepared Shot {E}
Penetrating Attack
Sundering Attack
Kindle Arrows/Apply Poison
Troll Unguent
Condition Removal (I chose Antidote Signet)
Stance (I chose Whirling Defense)
Bow: Any with a Vampiric String
Attributes: depends, I'll explain later
I chose:
Expertise: 11 + 2 = 13
Marksmanship: 10 + 1 = 11
Wilderness Survival: 10 + 1 =11
Wasted points: 1
The strategy of this build is simple: spam the three bow attacks and use Prepared Shot to compensate for the massive energy loss for having every shot cost energy. The result is a very high damage output that not many people except from a non-Burning Arrow ranger, but none of the energy problems.
Weaknesses:
Limited interrupts, defense and utility compared to other ranger builds.
My personal comments:
Before I ran this build, I used Escape as my elite. This limited my damage but gave me a lot of defense, so to compensate I had three attack skills and only one interrupt. Changing to the Prepared Shot simply switches the advantages from having high defense to having high offense. However! The Prepared Shot never has any energy problems, even in extended fights, (especialy if you use Kindle Arrows) and does not rely on the existance of enchantments and hexes (Forked Arrow) and the life of target (Needling Shot). Also, in order to compensate for my lack of defense I put some extra points into expertise, which made my stances better, but its up to you if you want more damage, defense, or healing and preperations.
In my opinon, the increase in damage and a full mana pool more than compensates for the lack of interrupts and defense. What do yall think?

I have been using a build similar to this but with dual shot and read the winds instead of your prepartions.

Why in gods name are you running 11 Marksmanship?! The whole frigging point of the elite is to gain more energy the more you have in Marksmanship... and the rest of your build seems to be based on doing damage. 11 Marksmanship can't damage for shit. (Neither can Penetrating/Sundering anymore either tbh). Got 2 builds for it, Interrupter and Conditioner, no Shampoo though.
[skill]Prepared Shot[/skill]
[skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Screaming Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill]
Or
[skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Concussion Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill]
15/16 Marksmanship, 12/11 Wilderness Survival, 9 Expertise
Last 2 slots for a res, evasive stance or mending touch. At 16 Marks Prep Shot nets you 10 energy, 7 gained w/ 9 expertise. At 15 Marksmanship, 9 energy.
I tend to use the Conditions build if any, that many interrupts is a little ott but you get enough energy to use Concussion Shot fairly often. If your in an area with lots of immunity to poison/bleeding (or generally that monsters are spiked down so fast it doesn't matter) you can use RtW/Kindle and Keen Arrow/Crossfire instead.
Edit: If anyone comments on how Burning Arrow is better i will castrate you with a rusty spoon.

Barrage is better.

Barrage is boring.

Boring Barrage ... someone should make a build around that theme ... mhh ...
[skill]Barrage[/skill]
Ok, enough. As an option, lowering WS. If you're hitting one opponent, like in PvE, you'll only need a few points for the poison and Kindle is comparable in damage to RtW, so one could go for just Read the Wind.
Evilsod, where have the damage skills gone to? You were complaining about low Marks and then change everything to interrupt or conditioning?

I played around with Prepared Shot and used the following skills for damage dealing:
[skill]Prepared Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Screaming Shot[/skill][skill]Penetrating Attack[/skill][skill]Kindle Arrows[/skill]
When used together, every attack made can be done so by using an attack skill, even if an interupt is never used. Kindle Arrows is used because half the point of using Prepared Shot is not having to invest heavily into Expertise. Therefore the attributes run with 16 Marks, 9 Expertise, and 11 Wilderness Survival (assuming a sup mask w/ rune and all minors).
This was the best Prepared Shot build I have tried myself so far, but it's still weaker than an Apply Poison + Burning Arrow + Crossfire (or other 5 energy attack skill) build if you are going against fleshy enemies imo. When tested on the dummies, it was possible to take down all 4 dummies at once before they popped back up when spreading poison and burning to each targets and could get 3 down at once when targetting only 1 dummy at a time, but the Prepared Shot combo could only take down 2 targets at a time max.
Unless there is a good buff on Ranger attack skills, it's going to be hard for me to take Apply and Burning Arrow out of my skill bar for most situations.
Oh, and Barrage is not better. It may be better suited for specific PvE type situations when large mobs can be expected, but it's a bit weak when your enemies aren't in huge mob balls.
*edit* I swapped out Kindle Arrows for Apply Poison and was able to get similar results with the Prepared Shot build. I guess it's just Kindle Arrows that sucks, lol.

Penetrating/Sundering Shot do what? Around +24ish in total (i think Snipeous worked out somet like that). At lvl11 it'd do... *shrug* maybe +18? Every 2-3 seconds based on your attack speed.
Screaming Shot + Apply Poison is -7 degen. Which is 14 damage a second, multipled by say 2.5s for the refire of the bow attacks... erm yeah thats at least 35 damage in the same time frame. Plus Screaming Shot does +25/26damage. Prepared Shot does +25/26damage. Interrupts do *alot* of damage if you interrupt self heals or Savage Shot a spell for +28/29.
Is that the damage you were looking for? That was a very poor attempt as a smart ass reply.
Burning Arrow bores me... its powerful and all but to actually cause any damage with it you need to use it regularly. Its a very energy intensive build and overtime will become less and less effective. I barely ever use it in all honesty, least in PvE anyway. Its just been hyped up by the damage numbers of the burning and the fact everyone and there dog runs it in PvP because it causes alot of damage if the conditions aren't removed and they're quite costly to continuously reapply, just because its a good ganking skill doesn't mean its a great all round skill.

[skill]Keen Arrow[/skill] Unless your also running "Go for the eyes!" that would be a bad idea atm. Snipious just confirmed it and moved my thread to the right forum. Its bugged, if you don't strike for a critical you do absolutely nothing extra, its basically cost you 3 energy to fire a regular arrow.
As Kindle Arrows vs Apply Poison goes, unless you really need the fire damage Apply would be the best choice. As it goes its only downside is the fact it costs alot of energy to keep up, specially mid-fight, Prep Shot is a brilliant energy management skill that lets you keep Apply up with no problems so you'll end up doing more damage with it.
I never did like Melandrus Shot... now its completely worthless, its not worth taking a bow attack that costs 10e to gain 15 only against enchanted foes when i can use a 5e skill to gain 10e for buffing myself with a preperation.

If you calculate the actual dps of a recurve bow and kindle arrows prep and a recurve bow apply poison prep, apply poison only does about 1 or 2 more damage per second, which is not worth the extra 10 energy of apply poison.
Why I decided on 11 marksmanship: Prepared shot still gives enough energy back so you can use 10 energy (minus expertise) with every attack. Also if you read the entire post you would have seen that I put extra points into expertise in order to improve my stance since the Prepared Shot build still does way more damage than an average ranger build.

I agree with Evilsod in that you should just stick with full Marks. Putting points into Expertise for nothing other than extending the duration of a stance is a bit of a waste imo.

What expertise are you running in your Burning Arrow build that makes it 'very energy heavy'? I run mine with 14 expertise and haven't really encountered that problem. As for it's damage output, the advantage is that you can deal very close to what you deal with Sundering + Screaming with Burning Arrow and free up a slot that can be used for utility or extra damage. The reason I believe you see so much Apply + Burning is because it allows rangers to deal a good amount of damage while still being able to have 2 interupts along with a stance, heal and condition removal. The condition of burning may be removed, but the same applies to Bleeding except that Burning can be reapplied every 5 seconds whereas bleeding comes only every 8.

I think you might've made an error. Kindle Arrows at 11 WS does 18. Damage that is effected by armour. Chances are late game it'll hit for 10-15 damage. And you have no IAS or Needling Shot to modify your attack speed. Refire on a Recurve is 2.4s, Apply could do 20 damage by itself in that time frame to the single foe. You can't really expect to do that much damage with that low Marksmanship, that and the ranger isn't meant for straight DPS. Edit: 14 Expertise? I usually run 11/12/14 for the breakpoint on Apply Poison. In all honesty though i've not really paid *that* much attention to it when it comes to breakpoints. How do you get to the 14 Marksmanship breakpoint though? Using 2 Majors would leave you very little to put in Wilderness leaving you with no self heal and a poor Apply. Would it be reasonable to use 16 Marksmanship and a +1 20% mod in the hope you reach a 6 second burning? Whats the scaling on Prepared Shot suppose to be anyway? It scaling from 8-10 between 14 and 16 Marksmanship looks very odd tbh, specially considering practically everything seems to have a breakpoint at 14 attribute nowadays... XvArchonvX

Attributes on the Burning Arrow build I run: 14 Marks (sup + mask) 14 Exp (major) 9 WS (minor) If used in a GvG or HA type setting then obviously runes would need to be adjusted to give a buffer for a possible spike, but even at 13 expertise the build should still run fine. Since Rangers are one of the more durable classes however, it's generally safe to run a sup with a major rune (since ranger stances help avoid physical damage and Rangers have 100AL vs ele damage). 9 WS will give 10 seconds of poison from apply, which should be plenty since it is applied almost constantly. And degen is horrible in AB sometimes. I think i'll live with 12 expertise tbh, 9 WS doesn't do so well for the breakpoint of Unguent and Stride. SnipiousMax
^ It really isn't so bad as you think. I've been running a sup/major combo for awhile now. You hardly notice a difference at all if you wear +health armor. And you can easily drop a hero-tank's health if you feel that you're taking to much flak.

yes, kindle arrows is affected by armor, but if two people cause poison on one target then one person 4 pip degen is completely worthless.
Master Ketsu
Prepared shot should be reserved for builds that would normally be energy inefficient without it.
I believe I made a build a while back that used brutal weapon with rtw, and prepared shot so you always had enough energy to re apply it. The spike from it was slightly stronger and faster then Glass arrow spike ( But at the cost of 1 skill slot ) Using Prepared with concussion shot is also a good idea. A good intterupter could own with that. Amy Awien

A recurve bow is not a good choice to deliver Kindle's payload, but with the faster refire flat- or shortbow (2 seconds) kindle does look comparable to Apply Poison

why would you have 2 people on your team both running poison?
@ Amy: Melandru's Shot is way to conditional to rely on as energy management. Amy Awien
The precondition for it's effect wasn't his point. Besides, that precondition is easily met, the use of enchantments is rather common.

You made this comparison of energy return, so I'm not sure how this is beside your point.
The precondition is easily met in certain conditions. If you use this in certain PvE areas where all the enemies have enchants, it will work fine, but in most other areas and PvP type areas, relying on your foes to be enchanted for energy management is going to lead to periods of energy drought. I doubt anyone will run Ranger Spike with Apply poison. ^^
Kindle is good in how it gives dps without the high energy of apply. But if you have an Apply ranger spamming poison on everyone the dps/pressure is way more helpful. You can't say one of these is better than the other but you can say which is better for which build. For Burning Arrow build, Apply. For an attack skill spammer, Kindle. Amy Awien

Evilsod remarked that Melandru's shot was so bad because it was so expensive (in it's basecost) without returning too much, but if you look at it with normal (to high) levels of expertise in mind, the net return is at least as good. I thought his representation of the cost-return data was slightly biased against Melandru's Arrows. That's all.
LazyLink
Again, the build I posted was for Alliance Battles, not GvG. In most cases, the group you're in is does not synergize their build together so it could easily be the case that two people have a poisoning ability. I guess you can still spread poison around several targets but when youre fighting PUG vs PUG the best strategy is to focus fire on one target and bring it down fast, but when two people are relying on poison damage, that PUG's dps is significantly hurt.

Drop one of the interrupts (or mending touch depending on context) for rez sig if required. The usual spread is marksmanship 9+1, wilderness 9+1, expertise 12+1+1, 2 prot but with this you could probably do with 9+1 expertise and 12+1+1 marks an idea, anyway ^^ SnipiousMax

Because even without GftE, a critical hit occurs once every five shots. The damage AVERAGE is actually quite impressive (on paper) for a five energy skill, and the massive amount of damage dealt when it does trigger is just icing. Currently it is bugged, but once fixed it will return to my skill bar.

Drop one of the interrupts (or mending touch depending on context) for rez sig if required. The usual spread is marksmanship 9+1, wilderness 9+1, expertise 12+1+1, 2 prot but with this you could probably do with 9+1 expertise and 12+1+1 marks an idea, anyway ^^ Hmm, I don't think this setup would really take advantage of Prepared Shot. With 14 expertise, you could probably run this whole skill bar just fine without ever using Prepared Shot. Drop the Expertise a bit and invest in Marks and/or Wilderness and I think this build would be more efficient. anshin

exactly... when it really does something... perhaps i'll use it too... but if currently it is just a normal attack at the cost of 5 energy...

This build keeps popping up in my head but I've never actually tried it. It easily does 30+ damage against most targets. works great on torturewebs, but I used BHA instead of prepared. But if you wanna wait for it concussion will certainly do the trick also, just agro with frustration. roblethal

I'd have to agree, any Prepared Shot with an expertise higher than say 9, is wasted attribute points if you ask me. Unless you are running nothing but 10 energy cost skills, I can't see why you would want it that high. Put marks at 16 so you get 10 energy from Prepared Shot, giving you 16 energy replenishment every 6 seconds. What I find great about using Prepared Shot, is it allows me to place my attributes somewhere other than at standard expertise levels, giving more build flexibility.
