I have a 56k connection =/, and for the most part the game runs fine. It's just that sometimes i'll get these 10 second lag spikes where EVERYTHING freezes, and then kind of fast forwards. I'm wondering if this happens to anyone else with dial up, or if there's a way to fix it. And I'd like to know anyways i can perhaps reduce lag. (I've done the heapsizing and it's helped abit but i still get the lag spike.)
Thanks.
Any dial up users out there?..

I'm on a dial-up connection, but I never get lag spikes, unless something is stealth downloading in the background. Check your firewall to see whether it runs an automatic live update.

I run on a dial-up connection and i get the same problems sometimes. However the game is still playable over the modem.

I'm on dial-up as well and generally I don't have too many problems or issue's with major lag or lag spikes. However I do occassionally get lag spikes just like you describe, but generally this happens in "peak" times wehn there are likely to be more ppl online and thus my ISP get's slower and laggy.. but apart from that I'm fine.
If you find yourself lagging what you could do is shutdown any non-essential programs down before you play - especially those instant messaging programs.. such as MSN or AIM. You might also want to shut everything except your AntiVirus and FireWall down (like any scanner/printer/etc software you might be running) as this will free up memory and prevent these programs from sitting in the background and possible using your limited bandwidth.
You should also consider defrag'ing your hard drive regularly - I find that if I do it weekly my system run's smoother and faster than if I just let it go and never defrag it.

i used to have a dial-up connexion and that would happen to me whenever someone tried to call. I think it can be fixed though if you disable call waiting.

You can reduce lag by going into windows task manager and settin the priority for Gw.exe to high.

I experience the same problem sometimes where the connection freezes suddenly and then goes back to normal. I contacted support and they said that I need to update my video card drivers, (although my current `outdated' ones still go far beyond the minimum required).
Since my system can easily handle Guild Wars, I'm presuming the lag is due to too many dial-up users logging onto the net with my ISP, (this can be a problem with dial-up, depending on what company you are with).
I've signed up with broadband and should get the modem in several days and I suggest you go with broadband as well, if it's available in your area.

What part of the country/world are you from? I want that speed! hehe
I feel for people on dial-up...I had it for years and years until DSL showed up then Cable finally got their act together and then became avalible.

well I am also on 56K and I USED to get the lag spikes (always at the worst times) but then I realized that when I got hit with those major lag issues, it was always around a time when we would be getting phone calls.
So I turned off call waiting on my modem dialer settings (dial *70 first) and I havent had any lag since.
Even before this "fix" I was still running pretty dagone good (must have meant nobody wanted to talk to me lol) and I was able to run the game so smoothly that when I would tell people I was on 56K they were surprised (not by the outdated tech. but because they just couldnt belive I was running so smoothly over dial up) So for this I want to thank Anet. because without your ability to make this game run ver 56K I couldnt even play at all.

i was using dial up as well, occasionally when there is too much player in a district of the area i was in then i will lag out with NetErr=7. I guess going to district of area with lesser people will solve the problem

Even when i play at 2 a.m. i still get the lag spikes. So it's not that people are calling.
