What did you hope for, and what did you get from playing Guild Wars?

Well met!
Before I played Guild Wars, I played numerous single player RPGs. No matter how good they were, they were ultimately unsatisfying. When I heard about Guild Wars, I longed to play it, but technical issues got in the way. When I was finally able to play it, I was overjoyed! I now play nothing else (and have given away all my other games).
When I was young, many ages ago, I dreamed that someday, perhaps in college, I would live in a world where I would be appreciated (and be appropriately worshipped as the wonderfully wise, intelligent, loveably divine creature that I was). It was quite a while before I had an inkling that the problem might be with me rather than the world. But, even so, Guild Wars seemed to be the fulfillment of that long ago dream.
As it has turned out, to a great extent, it has. But the dream has evolved as I have matured. I am not a god-like being in Guild Wars, far from it, but I have been fortunate in finding a guild and meeting people (many in PUGs, lol) who appreciate the man I have become and/or the character I play, and display, within the context of the world of Guild Wars.
The similarities, and differences, between Guild Wars and "real life" are not lost on me, and lessons learned in one reinforce the lessons in the other, and vice-versa. I could go on, but i am more interested in your stories . . . .

I started playing because my fiance got into it just after release and he wanted me to play too. I started, loved it and became addicted (in the "I like this game when nothing else is going on" way, NOT the "Oh, THE SUN, THE SUN IT BURNS I must run to my pc, I must play GW!" way :P)
I got what I wanted. I love the game, have fun at it etc. My guy got what he wanted. I never complain about his gaming time bacause I'm gaming right next to him LOL and he gets bragging rights that his girl can beat up any player in our guild in 1v1...he finds that too fun.
I'm not sure I have found some sort of existential breakthrough due to my GW experience. I play it as a game, end of story. It's fun, entertaining, occasionally frustrating and often humorous. I haven't found my life's dream or meaning in it because well...I find those in my life not my game.

I've also played many single player RPGs and just like you after playing for a few months maybe one year at most I would just get sick of it.
I've also made so many more friends online in Guild Wars then I find I do in Real Life.
As for what I hope for is a game that I never stop having fun in also to make new friends.
I was also looking for an online game that’s free I will never, never pay per month for a game. Evil!!!
As for what did I get so far everything I wanted plus more. I probably can go on and on about all the lesson I've learnt but I don't want to drag this post on.

First off, Kolakoski, I want to give my thanks for you being the friendliest person I've ever seen on any forum. You rock!
When I first bought Guild Wars, I was hoping for a huge-scale world to explore. I remember when I had first gotten to post-searing and looked at the map...WOW I was excited! It was huge. Even though there were many unexploreable parts of that map, I was too involved in the game that I didn't care. I was having a whole lot of fun killing things, doing the missions, and just getting further in the plot. Prophecies will always be the best.
I pretty much got out of it what I hoped for, really. Can't say that for the later campaigns, though...

I started to play because my hubby wanted something for us to do together, $50 was pretty cheap for something we have played for almost 2 years together---and are still playing.
What I had hoped for? A game that didnt involve killing every 2 seconds...what I got was ok....there were lots of quests when we started and now with the cartography titles I have fun just mapping!
So yes, I got what I had wanted to get out of the game ---and more since I am still playing it!

If I'm honest, I was underwhelmed with it after a rather short while. I found the gameplay to be somewhat shallow, with a short and rather clichéd storyline and a rather poor community (outside of these forums, of course). I like a game I can get immersed in, to believe I am actually in a place and doing the things I am supposed to be doing. Escapism, it's called. I find it very difficult to do that when you take into account some of the less-than-mature people running around in Guild Wars. Many other online games are guilty of this too, though, and it's why I largely play single player games again now. Still, I periodically revisit the game, like now.
My biggest problem these days is that my copy was bought way back when the game was released, so, it takes an age to play whenever I reinstall!

gw is very weak if you view it as rpg, it has as much rpg as quake
game's fun and that's it, if it weren't for farming and rare items I wouldn't play that much

I hoped for a way to get to "hang out" with my family when our busy schedules had us a bit hard to track down. My brother and his fiancee convinced me to pick it up last Christmas, selling me on no monthly fee (thus killing my "but what if I don't play that much?" excuse), and I joined the guild, which is mainly family and close friends, and never looked back. I got a friend to play, then my husband and stepson, then my roommate and his to be brother in law, and keep trying to get everyone wrangled in that I can. Our guild is a fun laid back group and I love that.
So what was I hoping for? A fun way to run around and kill stuff with my family. What did I get? Exactly that, and an outlet that helped me cope with one of most crazy times in my job I've ever had. And a great way to distract myself when I'm too fried to write or it's too late to drum.
(or days like today, when I'm stuck at home sick)

To be honest, when I first heard about the game from my brother, I didn't have very high hopes for it. I didn't know that much about the game, and to me it sounded like it was almost just like another Diablo 2. And I got bored of Diablo 2 very quickly, since the only thing you could do is kill things over and over again.
But when I first saw the game, when my brother gave me his buddy key from Factions CE, that was it. I realised how beautiful the world was, how rich the storyline was, and that's what made me fall in love with the game. Then I learned that there wasn't the same grind as all the other games out there (unless you chose to do it, like for Legendary Defender of Ascalon). So I discovered that this game was very different from Diablo 2 and other games, and that's why I love it.

TBH, I was looking for a Diablo II clone done properly. I had tried several other games to get the same feeling of satisfaction I derived from that game, but to no avail. Guild Wars was, to be blunt, not what I expected. That isn't to say that it failed to satisfy. Once I got used to the idea of team play, I found GW to be lots of fun.

GW was and is a fun way to keep in touch with folks from other video games I've played. That it's fun is just a bonus, because now it's not just a place holder.

I had no clue what to expect when getting into this game. I'd never played an mmo and a couple friends had been bugging me to try it for a while. So, I finally gave in hoping to have fun...thats about it.
As it turned out, I've had loads of fun playing this game. One unexpected surprise was how great the social aspect turned out to be in terms of my guild. I went guildless for the first few months of the game and when I finally started looking and settled into one I had a really great time and met some good people. I never expected to get into PvP as much as I have though I probably should have since I have a competative magic playing background. Anyway, good times overall. I love the idea of the skill system, the worlds are great to look at. There of course have been many dissapointments regarding the state of PvP but I won't dredge that up here.

Considering I didn't speak to anyone the first several months I played, I certainly didn't join the GW community to make friends. But ultimately, I met up with some really nice people I looked forward to seeing each day. Some have long since abandoned GW in favour of other games or real life responsibilities. The game itself offered 22 months of entertainment. Unfortunately, the fun is gone and I fear I too will be moving on. I don't regret the many hours I invested in playing the game - but I have to wonder what else I might have accomplished in that time.

I was expecting Diablo 3 and I wasn't desappointed on finding that it was indeed like... uh... uh... damn. GW is unique.
