Couple newbie questions
Verranicus
So, I just made my first Ritualist last night. :P What are these guys good for in PVE? And what's a decent secondary?

Rits have a reputation of being one of the most flexible classes. You'll be able to do basically anything on a competent level.
Unlike many classes, you'll have a hard res, so monk isn't as desireable a secondary as on other classes. I personally use Mesmer fairly often for Utility spells. Oftentimes I'll run a full bar of Rit skills though.
Consider Mesmer for Arcane Echo, some energy management, etc. Consider Ele for Glyph of Lesser Energy.

So, what exactly makes us worth taking in a group?

We can lay down an army of spirits to deal large amounts of damage.
We have weapon spells which are unremovable (as of now).
Our restoration skills can potentially far surpass a monk.
As been said, we are incredibly flexable meaning we work very as
Rt/Mo, Rt/N, Rt/P, Rt/D (potentially, I havent tested it), Rt/R
Ritualists are kinda like mesmers in that they leave room for originality and tend to be able to use more custom skill bars, effectively, than most classes. I play my ritualist FAR from cookie cutter and im fairly succesful.

In general, people take rits in PvE as a poor man's monk. However, rits are far superior as healbots, primary monks only outshine them with the prot line. Rit weapon spells also rock all kinds of faces.
It's actually rare to see an effective offensive spirit spammer in PvE, just because it takes so damn long to ast the things. (Wait another 20 seconds before pulling that mob guys, I need to set up... oops, they're already dead. Well, give me 45 seconds before the next mob then....)
Rits also make fun minion bombers using boon of creation, explosive growth and reclaim essence, among other things.
In general, it's a very flexible class.

Rits are also now one of the least understood classes with most players, and one of the harder ones to play because of skill interdependence and the sheer options available.
Generally, players will expect you to be a restoration ritualist, a spirit spammer, or a channeler. Don't let player expectations stop you from experimenting as you gain experience with the class. As Crazyvietguy said, you can make your own custom builds and be effective. However, since you are new to the class I would recommend you start with the expected builds to get the hang of the mechanics before working out your own builds.
Welcome to the Ritualist discipline.

As all have said above Rts are very versitle, and as they also said, be outside the box AFTER you have gotten down the basics (don't group spirits together, don't try to channel rangers to death and so on). I recently started Rting too. I've learned from watching guild battles with Res rits in them, spirit spammers and so on. I learned the basics then and the learning curve of an RT is actually pretty flat, contrary to popular belief.
so basically learn the basics and then jump. There's not many ways to go wrong with an Rt...just make sure you don't spread your attribs too thin.
Oh and a good tip. Try doing RA, Isle of the Nameless or Fort Aspenwood for some practice. If you see Guild Mascot D S L that's me. You can shadow me, if you like and see how I do things. But that's up to you.
again,

I have nothing new to add here, as everything has been said before. In PvE most rits are expected to be restoration or a variation of the rit lord build, but do not let that discourage you from experiencing and experimenting with different builds that suit your style. Personally, I prefer an offensive approach because I like being able to show that rits are not just all about spirits and really are able to dish out some good damage.

Nothing to add, really, other than a general agreement with the above posters. Ritualist is a very versatile class and has a bit of a learning curve. After you "get it" though, it is a very fun and satisfying class to play.

As has been said before...Spirit Spamming and Minion Bombing are pretty fun.
I like Restoration on my Ritualist. Imo they can be better healers than Monks, with the added bonus of in-profession energy management. I know that'll make a lot of monks very cross. I got my fingers burnt on that before...but as far as party heals and self-energy management goes they're considerably better.
Channeling can be fun and some people say it can be very powerful but I'm still playing around with that to see how good I can make it. I devised a rather nice build last night but it's still not perfect yet.

As mentioned by previous posts, Ritualists are classified - by the non-aware or by people who are too stuck on the classics - as a next in line monk.
Many PUGs will request that you are a Restoration Ritualist. Some may be ok with you being a Communion Ritualist, but most will not accept a Channeller. But that's okay, you can test skills out on your own and see what seems good. Test them out on everything, somethings may not work in certain areas, but will work wonders in others.
In the beginning, experiment. Don't bother with looking at builds, because until you hit 20th lvl and are at least in Kaneing Center, you won't have the opportunity to have all the skills available to you, let alone any elites.
In the right hands, a Ritualist is the supreme party healer, condition remover, can be a very good protector, and a potentially good damage dealer. Spirits or lightning spells make the diverse damage dealing power for the Ritualist.
As for 2ndary profession:
Look at what is missing from the Ritualist that others may have:
1) Healing - check
2) Blocking - check (spirits)
3) condition removal - check
4) hex removal - missing
5) running - missing
6) some way to deal damage - check
7) hard rez - check
8) energy management - check
The way I see it, you are missing two things, movement and ways to deal with hexes. Mesmers have both, but the running aspect isn't very good. Monks have hex removers too, but 0 movement ability.
Also, look at what professions synergizes with the Ritualist. I have a Rit/N, so I can act as a Ritualist or as a MM Bomber.
Choose what you think you'd like to do. If it doesn't work as you had hoped, you can change your 2ndary at Senji's Corner.
Good luck and enjoy!
