This is an idea i had some time ago and think i can be implemented without too much effort by anet.
The basic mode would be like random arena, X players go to random survival pvp, and each one enters at a resurrection point in a pve map area, everything on the area is a potential enemy, creatures and every other player. The objective is to defeat all other players in the area. To defeat a player you must conquer his resurrection point and his character must die.
You get morale boost for each other player resurrection point conquered.
This random mode should use not too hard pve areas to let players a chance of survival.
Killing creatures in the area should give some kind of boosts instead of the usual gold/items.
And chests the opportunity to get special abilities for the battle.
The advanced mode should be for 6 ,2-players teams or 4 4-players teams, each one in more rough areas, following the same rules of victory.
Extra options could be recruitment of henchies through the match, special "bait" items to use creatures in the map to your team benefit.
Skills rewarded by chest should be special traps, ability to charm pets or dominate creatures, special modifiers to weapons and armor...
All of this should make a more enjoyable pvp mode and get use of some of the best pve maps.
Maps used should be classified for his hardness level and players could get new factions points like Melandrus Faction, with his own tittles and emotes, perhaps special pets...
Pets could be used in this mode like a "hero" but without any offensive ability or life but with X special slots for special abilities for this mode, like the baits, stealth, and rewarded abilities during the match so they dont spend your own character slots.

ok ill try to clear the basics.
The first is use pve "instanced" areas as PVP maps, but without erasing the creatures that you would encounter normally on those instanced pve areas.
Modifying the drop of the creatures of those maps to drop only special boost items, like morale bonus, speed enhancement, artribute enhancement, reduction of conditions.. etc...
additionally, bosses and chests (don't need keys) unlock extra abilities non-dependant of atributes to those who defeat or open them. This abilities cannot go in the standard 8 slot of a character, so each character at this pvp areas, has a special HERO called for example Melandru's Gift, this hero does not even affect gameplay phisically but his 8 slots for abilities serve as support slots for your character. In this slots you will have certain basic skills to balance the game for different profesions and X blank slots readied when you get special abilities for opening chests of defeating bosses.
Victory is earned when you defeat all other players, but players will resurrect unless their resurrection shrine has been taken by another player.
This mode can be played as X characters 1 vs all mode, X teams 2 vs all mode, or X teams 4 vs all mode. To balance the effect of pve creatures, 1 vs all areas should be those of low level, and for greater teams higher level areas where creatures are very dangerous and can defeat entire teams before other players get them.
Melandru's gift special abilities should be:
stealth abilities to evade creatures while exploring the maps or getting out of trouble.
trap abilities to have strategic points of the maps protected or make ambushes to other players.
Control of neutral creatures like a ranger does.
Bait abilities that atract hostile creatures to certain areas.
In these survival arenas, you earn Melandru faction points that would also unlock emotes.
Like other pvp modes, special tournament areas can be implemented like heroes ascent, instead of hall of heroes, we could have an area where teams must defend a single area(some kind of fortress of nature) from hordes of enemies while fighting for the resources to protect their zones.
