Knowing what characters you have already would be helpful.

PvE or PvP? Not that it matters really, as there are no best combinations. It all depends on how you want to play the game - melee, ranged, caster.

Most wanted in PvE groups is monk. PvP changes according to the team build.

Here is the link to the wiki which will allow you to read about the professions and which secondaries work best with each one. http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page

Dead Alley [dR]

Warrior primary monk secondary. Everyone knows that a W/Mo with mending, heal breeze, and healing hands is the best class.

What kind of monk - healer, prot, bonder, 55hp? And again, PvE or PvP?

for general purpose monking, I would reccomend mesmer for the hex removal/energy gain(see inspired hex and revealed hex). But don't worry too much about your secondary, you shouldn't be using more then 1 or 2 skills from it.

If you have no monking experience, then a healer is the best way to go. Use Mesmer as a secondary so you can use skills to gain energy. Remember you are not a melee character and stay back from battle.

But before choosing the secondary, do all the secondary profession quests so that later in the game, when you want to change your secondary, you will have access to those skills instead of needing to buy them.

The Lost Dynasty [SEEK]

W/Mo

W/Mo with Mending, Healing Breeze and Essence Bond (My REAL W/Mo build when I first got GW. I thought I was the l33tn3ss for thinking of such a thing)

But seriously, if you wanna be a monk you should go Mesmer secondary to help with energy..

IMO going /e for Glyph of Lesser Energy is best energy management.

I would have to agree with Llint, /e is best for e-management.

You get those skills anyway when you do all the skills quests in post Ascalon. This is after you do all the Path quests after you ascend. To the OP where are you planning on making this Monk the best place is Prophecies as it has a slow learning curve and skill quests.I would read up on some builds in the Monk forum. Then there is the guildwiki.

I would say either mesmer or elementalist for energy management. If you plan on doing the 55 monk for farming, go warrior. But you can just choose warrior later on once you have experience doing actual monking with mesmer or elementalist secondary.

Some good skills from each profession:

Mesmer-

[skill]Inspired Hex[/skill], [skill]Revealed Hex[/skill], [skill]Mantra of Recall[/skill] (haven't seen it used in a long time though, wonder why it fell out of practice.)

Elementalist- only one really: [skill]Glyph of Lesser Energy[/skill]

You don't need to choose /W if you plan on 55ing it later on any secondary will do.The good thing about /W is tactics stances and shouts for the Warrior line and stances just got better for castors.
