Uh...Children?
Taking place long after our characters have lain their bones to rest, our children pick up our cause.
We have this concept thoroughly explored with Devonna. Long after the first Guild Wars, she picked up her father's Hammer and started cracking Charr skulls.
A-Net could devise a system wherein we mark items of a sentimental nature as "Heirlooms." They could allow us to pass on a degree of wealth or fame to a point, so as not to unbalance the surge of new arrivals to the storyline.
Our descendants could retain our last names, join whatever fight the new storyline throws us into as the same class as our ancestors or as something different, the same sex or something different.
I personally look just like my father, have his middle and last name, share the same initials as him, but i am going down a different career path. There was a point where I could have elected to follow his footsteps but I chose not to. We could do this just as easily with our new characters, making them as similar or dissimilar to our GW1 counterparts.
How age and family is going to play out in this new chapter is yet to be seen but this could be an interesting dynamic simply as a way to retain some essence of the first game or as a way to immerse yourself in a continuing storyline.
What do you think? Viable? Idiotic? Unbalanced? Brilliant?
A Solution to Gw1-Gw2 Character Transfer?

Is giving veterans any kind of significant head-start in a new game really a good thing for that game? Especially when you're level 1 and supposedly scraping for ID kits.
For storyline, just name your characters or make them look similar, if that helps you feel better, Anet doesn't really need to do anything. I doubt anyone is going to manage to steal all the good first names for whatever your old last name is.

It could work.
If GW2 is an extension of GW1 and not a new game using, different money, items, stats, game mechanics, ect.
We don't know anything yet on if GW2 will be an extension of GW1 in any way.
I can only assume the decision to make a GW2 is based on changing a lot more about the game than just a new graphics engine.

Well, I don't particularly care about items. I don't think items should be carried over. It'd just make a group of people elite from the first day, since they'd be able to bring their best items across. The thing I care about is the titles I've earned (and will have earned by the time GW2 will supposedly be released).
Also, if there are playable races, if I can't play as my original characters, I'm gonna play as a Charr. It doesn't really make sense if I'm a Charr born from two human parents (sure, I could be half-Charr, but then I'd want to have some way of displaying that I'm a half-Charr, and I just don't see that happening).
And finally, I'm 19 in real life. I picture my characters as not much older, if at all. They will always be the same age as me, or around the same age. And I have no intention of having kids in real life anytime soon, and neither do my characters. There's plenty of other ways they could think of to implement a transfer, even if it's just titles that get transferred, and you have to redo your characters looks (since I'm assuming the engine will be drastically different).
But then again, I'm not too bothered if I can't transfer my characters. I was when I first heard the news of a possible GW2, but I came to terms with it, and was consoled by the thought of playing a Charr.
