Get the black widow. I have a friend that can do the run for you for free but as all pets are the same except different attack type i.e slashing piercing ect

All the pets except the bear behave exactly the same. They have the same damage output, with the only difference being that some do slashing and some do piercing damage.

The bears have their own skill, brutal mauling. A bear using brutal mauling is -slightly- lower in damage output, but not very much.

You do not NEED a pet. Many rangers either never use one or use them only rarely. Beastmaster rangers are usable in PvE, not so much in PvP except for specific builds.

My advice is get the pet you like the most since there isn't any noticeable difference between any of them, the damage type won't make a big difference.

In the majority of the game pets are very necessary. The Barrage pet build is one of the most tried and true builds and it obviously requires you to have a pet. What varies between pets are the way you level them up (dire, hearty, elder) in my not-so-humble opinion Hearty is the way to go seeing as how often pets die this will help out a little. PVP has their own whole deal with pets, but you wont be pvping with your rp character anyways so it doesn't really matter.

Pets will do different dmg based on evolution. Guildwiki explains it best... http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Pet
The pet evolves twice, once at lvl 10 and again at 15.

I suggest you get a pet, you don't always have to have your animal companion with you but he's there if you need him.

And some pets never evolve for an unknown reason...bug, combat style...who knows?

But, pick the pet you like the best based on looks, because that's pretty much their biggest value.

After I weigh out the use attribute points and the skill bar slots, I come away with the idea that my Ranger is more effective without a pet, except for maybe when I solo lower level bosses.

I do like my Black Moa though.

No, don't go with Hearty. Hearty is basically 15% less damage. You don't need more health just use comfort animal to rez your pet everytime it dies immediately after it dies (after the short skill blackout first, of course). Make sure you always bring comfort animal when using a pet.

...on the other hand a bear can trigger paragon shouts/chants that are activated by attack skills (crippling anthem etc).

id prefer to have a dire pet as when they reach higher levels there health and armour is high enuf for them to survive, also u will find more then half the time enemies dont concentrate on your pet more on you. Fact is no one knows wot is best, we can speculate all day but we cannot say one is better than the other there are too many variables. my ideal pet would be a dire black widow

A pet is one more option to help you beat the game. I say the more options the better. I get pets for all my chars and all their heroes. I don't always use them, but I have them if I need them.
