The Realm of Torment is BORING
xukaiwen
The realm of torment is boring. As in, I want to take crayons to my computer screen so I will have something interesting to look at while I quash demons.
How many shades of grey can there be? And don't tell me that painting the second to last mission red makes it anymore visually interesting.
But to the point: I don't like playing in the realm of torment because the terrain is so boring. Grey land. Grey skies. Grey trees. Grey enemies. Grey water. Grey buildings. Did they just hit the paint all button and go for grey? For that matter, fow, uw, desolation, and kaineng city are all areas that I avoid because I find it depressing and boring to play there.
The sad part is, the end game content is where I WANT to spend most of my time. But I find myself avoiding those areas because I would rather wander through the sublime surges of the jade sea or view the breath-taking cliffs and gorges of Vabbi. In fact, I don't even want to do the quests in the realm of torment because I hate playing in such an ugly environment. In comparison, I always take the time to finish each and every Vabbi quest (the trade contacts do help...) It doesn't bother me that some of Kourna is kind of boring. I pass through Kourna on my way to bigger and better things. What bugs me is that the biggest and best areas are so drab.
The fix? Please, please, make future end game areas visually interesting! I get the idea that a dark, evil god wouldn't live in the rolling hills of the telletubbies, but can't we be fighting to save a beautiful forest instead of assaulting the most boring plane of existence ever conjured up by the mind of a twisted god? (I'll give the designers the whole twisted intestines mission, though, that was pretty cool.)
Again, how many shades of grey can there be?

People have been asking for areas like Ch1 Pre-Sear for a long time; though it rarely happens.
Star Naiad
yeah i totally agree with you xukaiwen, why does evil have to look so boring. yeah for a change let us save a forest. I want GREEN!!... not enough green

Tarun: "People have been asking for areas like Ch1 Pre-Sear for a long time; though it rarely happens."
True. But I think Istan is visually interesting. Vabbi is beautiful. The Jade Sea (and arguably the Echovald Forest) are unique and fun to look at. I'm not saying that there aren't areas that are as fun to look at as Pre-Sear. I'm just asking why can't end game areas be fun to look at? The ring of fire is better than the realm of torment, but not by a whole lot. Its all one color.

Uhmm Devil have angel look? War looks like peace? Well I disagree with you! Everything have its own look/appearant! If you think DoA is boring then you should do something else! Everything WILL be boring if you play it OVER and OVER..no surprise!

i could see some more color in DoA. I mean margonite purple is nice and all but the area is a bit drab. If i were evil overlord i would dress in festive colors just to screw with the heros heads. They expect all blacks and greys.

Not A Fifty Five
DoA was supposed to be a place of desolation and destruction. So grey. I don't want DoA to look like some care bear happy realm.
As for other places... except for pre- I'm usually busy beating up monsters to notice or care, which is why i think pre is pretty and everywhere else is not as pretty.
Edit: Honestly, I think DoA should be entirely black and white
would add a more horror-style element to it ^^

The Hand Of Death
I don't find anything wrong with it. I always enjoyed the tormented landscape, the dark colors are a nice change form everything being so... nice. I think it is about time they made a totally dark looking place and it happens to be my favorite place to quest in. You can't have everything; you like the vabbian cliffs, I don't, I like torment, you don't. Trade offs.

He isn't asking to change the current endgame areas, he just wants more visual variety in the future ones, give him a break here. True, I don't like playing in the RoT at all (and not just because of the scenery). I don't even like playing in Elona except for a few places here and there. I like having more variety in the places I go to too, like in Tyria. There are mountains, coastlines, jungles, deserts, volcanoes, and wastelands in one game! Cantha is alright, the Echovald Forest, Jade Sea, and Shing Jea are nice to look at as well. I know Anet isn't going to change the current looks, but please add more variety to the future ones.
What rule is there that says the elite areas have to be black?

/signed for some lush plant filled end game areas, especially one based around the Maguuma jungle theme (the lower jungle areas with lots of plants and water, not the dry upper parts) as its my favorite part of GW graphics wise. Though high level areas with Kryta, Istan or Pre-Searing graphics would also be good.
Melandru's realm might fit this well, and if it reuses existing graphics, the art guys can be kept working elsewhere. Personally I'm sick of desolate areas, especially deserts.

Yeah, I always claim that I want Irish, Galician or Scottish like plains... with hills and such...
But the Torment is fine as it is... is a place to suffer for all eternity... it's not meant to be 'beautiful' it must be boring and suck.

The realm of torment is supposed to be evil looking, not inviting. If you want something pretty go to Vabbi. Sites there are spetacular.
Yes the Realm of Torment is boring, but its fun to massivly farm!

I agree it's REALLY boring! Having an evil person who likes beauty would be nice ^^ Even if we have to save the forests from some evil lumberjack dude!

I'm guessing the palette of colours are supposed to give off that "ruined/lifeless" feeling and the fleshy areas are supposed to give off that scary feeling that the realm of torment was made out of flesh or something... But it gets boring thus,

I thought suffering for all eternity was called marriage?
Anyhow, it's supposed to be gloomy, dark, and dreary. What do you want, Abaddon to attack you with a big musical song or something (I know he dances as it is)?

We dont need to be happy with green rolling hills.... just put some more thought into the design next time. Would it be wrong to have some other dark colors in there? Dark blues and greens would not be bad... even if just in the forms of glowing floating runes or some such crap.
I agree completely with the OP that the torment areas and the ring of fire are EXTREMELY boring to look at, there is absolutely nothing in those areas that is screenshot worthy. And it doesnt just have to do with teh colors, look at Echovald... that is mostly grey but there are still some STUNNING views in those areas.

First off, it's so dark and grey because - hell, it's Abaddon, dude. Everything he does, everything about him, is supposed to make you suffer.
However, this does make running through the end-game areas a little harder. I would like to see more of those cool purple Margonite towers, and maybe a different sky.
I still think it's a cool, though. I find it more enojoyable with the music off.

Places aren't really boring, but people can be.
Location: Big Dark Cave full of Monsters
Status: Boring
Explanation of Status: The cave is boring because it's big and dark...
o.O
I really don't need to have pre-school finger paint colors splashed all over my monitor in order to feel excited. Dark and sinister places are generally expected to be dark and sinister. Sure day-glo colors have a place, but not in a place called the Realm of Torment, eh?
These type of things are called "settings". Books have 'em, movies have 'em, and even paintings have 'em, they help frame the action and help illustrate the story.
Could be that there's just a lot of players that decide to disable the in-game audio so they can listen to the Back Street Boys Greatest hits while playing Guild Wars.
To me, that's like playing half a game, or watching a scary movie with the volume turned off. Guild Wars blasting at you in surround sound is fairly lively, in my opinion.
Ultimately, maybe it's just a complete rebellion against anything that smells of role playing immersion.
I remember when I first read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, I hated the part of the story where Frodo and Sam are making their slow and tortured progress through Mordor.
It wasn't boring, but it sure was depressing, painful and suffocating.

It's not about changing the present ones, it's about the future end-game areas. Pre-Sear is the most beautiful place, i'm not asking the DoA will look like that but there is an elite area that looks nicer than a whole lot of gray plate colors. It's cold The Deep, it's nice to look at it's fun to play in and it's challanging. Now why don't just make elite areas like that?

Who says evil can't be colourful? A "evil" sort of forest would have shades of green, blue and red. Having said this, I doubt this will happen in GWEN since most of the story takes place underground. Unless theres somekind of underground metropolis or forest, but I doubt that would happen.

well what i want to know is why do the monsters never attaack!
i mean we always end up pushing them back into the gloom
why dont the come raging into a coastal island of cantha?? where mighty treasures of super powers lie?
why does shiro not try to stop us getting the spear and jug thing?
its kinda weird hey.
i know that gw is an instanced area so we cant go over into presear but then again end of prophecies we fight cool stuff in askalon.
more of this is the answer i believe.

The Spear was already in the direct possession of the Luxons for their yearly Convocation.
The Kurzick Urn was protected and kept out of reach by a sabotaged security system that we have to fight our way through...
Demons, well, they are from another plane of existence and that is where they are staged when invading mortal lands.
So, I don't see the lack of variety that you see.

realm of torment and the desolation are dull lookin areas .
they were probably made in very little time and with little or no attention to detail.
make a huge plain.....apply one grey texture to it.....make some dumps....put some bloody texture (needs to be scary)...some random color here and there to show that u put some time into it.....one square building here....another square buildin that looks exactly the same over there......dump some mobs here and there who cares if they are so close together or not......done.

wow, now ive seen it all. i didnt think people could POSSIBLY b*tch about this but it seems im wrong. i mean come on if you want some nice rainbow colors and stuff go play freaking Super Mario Sunshine!! Seriously its SUPPOSED to be dull!! sorry they didnt make the game with unicorns and hearts and butterflys.
As a matter of fact, while Anet changes those regions to be all "happy" and stuff why dont we go ahead and make warriors use lollipops to send the creatures to happy land!!! OH also why dont we make Necros shoot hearts out of their wands to send love to allllllllll the creatures of the land [/sarcasm]
I mean come on, do you really expect an area named "Desolation" to be all colorfull and vibrant?
QQ moar please KTHXBAI

dunno. seems the doa looks sorta appropriate. high-level yard trash isn't my my idea of a good time so i do other end-game stuff.
maybe an idea?

I agree. A lot of the most visually appealing areas of the game are noob areas like pre searing or shing jea or the island in NF. The High end areas are supposed to look menacing but a lot of the artwork in the realm of torment just looks kinda random like something in a fishbowl. I think there should be beautiful areas that people find amazing drops in too, not all gloom and doom, and be scared, because that seems to be where the good stuff is.
BlackRecluse
i don't dislike the realm of torment, or DoA, or pretty much anywhere in any of the three continents...except for post-searing ascalon. that area makes me want to throw up. it's not so much boring as repetitive, or maybe its all the godamn Devourers popping up every 5 ft. here's to staying in pre-searing for as long as possible
Guardian of the Light
Abbadon made it boring so people would go mad before they got to him.

Personally, I think the real of torment is one of the best designed "hell's" in any fantasy based rpg that I have seen. I mean, have you ever seen another game where you have to walk on the bottom of a dead insect? (Domain of Fear). Hell is not supposed to be pretty and colorful, you're not supposed to want to be there

Deleet
It is a nightmare, what did you expect?
Besides, fighting terrible enemies in a cute landscape like pre-searing, would be wrong...
