Windows Vista

Hi i just bought a new computer with windows vista on it.

I cant play gw on it, i installed it but when the installation was finished i recived som type of error message on a bluescreen.

I checked guildwars.com and read that gw does not support windows vista.

Does anyone know if windows vista is the problem, or might it be something else?

AND: does anyone know when i might be able to play gw on vista?

I got some friends using Vista and they have no problems with GW, so it must be something else

What video card are you using? Maybe you need to upgrade the driver.

I have been useing Vista for almost a year, and have never had a problem playing GW on it. Even the early Beta versions I used had no problems.

Check your drivers first. Make sure that you have the most recent versions for things like chipset, sound, and video card. If this is a new "Custom Built" computer, double check the RAM. Make sure that it is the correct RAM for the motherboard (MSI and ASUS boards are notorious for not liking "cheap generic" ram).

Sorry, but that's just pure bull! Guild Wars runs just fine on Vista, I'd suggest looking elsewhere on your system for the problem. Post your specs.

Azagoth, there's a difference between being able to run, and being supported. Support means that the company that put out the software/service will help you to get it to run right on the supported system. Without support it can still work; the user is just on their own.

Pavel, you might be having a hardware problem, but it's more likely that you're experiencing problems with a device driver. The way Vista communicates with your hardware is different than the way XP does, and a lot of hardware manufacturers are still getting the hang of programming their drivers for Vista. Can you tell us the the error from the blue screen, and also which library is listed as the source? It should be a filename ending with .DLL or .EXE.

It's correct that Vista is not officially supported yet. My guess is that it will only be "officially" supported when GWEN comes out later this year, but I'm just speculating. That being said, as far as I know GW supports all Vista features currently, so Anet *must* have been testing and developing with it to some degree.

BTW, anytime you see a blue screen, it indicates a kernel-level problem. 99 times out of 100, these are driver problems. And, since audio drivers no longer reside at the kernel level (I think they can't bluescreen and take down the OS then), it's probably your video card. Locate and Google the filename listed in the error, and you should have your answer.

As a number of people have stated, the video card makers are still trying to get their drivers working properly under Vista. Unfortunately, this probably means you might be stuck until new drivers are released.

In the meantime, you could try adjusting your video settings to see if it avoids a crash. Try running with -dx8 on the command line, or turn off post-processing effects. Also, be sure to shut down any unnecessary programs that could be competing for resources or perhaps causing conflicts.

make sure the program is set to run as an administrator as well. If you had upgraded you would be able to run the problem hardware on previous version drivers. Not sure if you can do it on straight version though, something to check

Definately set to run as administrator. Also, if you're running Ultimate or Home Premium, turn off desktop compositioning and themes while you're playing (the easiest way to do all of this is to right click on the GW shortcut, go to Properties, and there's a tab with a lot of this stuff in it; this way, when you open GW it happens automatically and turns everything back on when you close it).

The only time I had any trouble with Vista and GW was last year during the Factions WPE, and as far as I could tell that was because my computer was probably not appreciating Vista, not because Vista and GW didn't work together. It was a very old computer and I only put Vista on it because I can.

Any info on the error would help; I can do what I can to help you with it, too. I've got a lot of experience with Windows Vista.

I run it on Vista just fine. Seems to me it would error on XP too.

Ok I don't knew if the OP sort out his problem yet, but by the look of thing I would say you need a new Nvidia graphic card driver. Here'e the link

NOTE: do make sure that you get the right one, there is 32 bit and 64 bit of vista. Series 9 driver still not up there yet in term of compatibility but it should help you out.

One more thing when you finish download the new driver and before you install it, make sure you uninstall the old driver 1st. Do this by go into control panel then Add or remove programs, then select nvidia driver and uninstall it.
Reboot your pc and install the new driver.
